UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

My guesses for lines:

Privitera - Colton - Bowen
Puffer - Misley - Coughlin
Dzhioshvili - Darrar - Petruzzelli
Alvaro - Lodermeier - Best

Swap in Blanleil, Cowans, Esposito, Fréchette, Kaufman, O'Neil as needed

Massie - O'Donnell
Phillips - Abramson
Evers - Grant

Swap in Kelly, Thomas, Moriarty as needed

Lekkas
Harmon
Beck

UVM is very fortunate that Abramson got an extra year. I think they are very thin on D so they need to score a lot of goals. Seems like they have the firepower this year. Wouldn't be surprised to see Cowans end up on one of the top 4 lines. I'm also hoping Sneddon doesn't spend the season tinkering with the top three lines.

I actually think we're deeper on D this year than last year. Just concerned about replacing Hamilton's production last year, but I'm really high on Grant, probably more than I should be.

Bombshell: Abramson is not returning, per Ted Ryan. Sneddon says it was his own decision to pursue outside opportunities, seems (based on the article) that it was on good terms and not a Kearley/Ferguson-esque cut.

Big loss physically...think this means more PT for Thomas who is a similar player.

Wow, that is a bombshell and a HUGE loss! I wouldn't read too much into the characterization that it's ending on good terms. It's always couched in those terms no matter what the actual reason--i.e., think Packy Munson leaving of his own accord, on good terms, and heading to Denver so that he could be closer to his family in Minnesota. Ya, sure. About the only departure I can think of that was outwardly nasty was when Justin Milo got booted off the team. Is it me or does Sneddon seem to have more of these occurrences than other coaches? This news is a real downer and has kind of dampened my enthusiasm for the upcoming season. :-(

I can see why Denver would be "closer" though, flights to Minnesota are a lot more frequent out of Denver than Burlington. (Side note, but the oodles of conspiracy theories make Denver a randomly-interesting airport) Apparently Ori wanted to pursue something outside of UVM.

Either way, it's not the end of the world (Thomas will probably see a lot of his minutes and from what I can gather he has the potential to be even better), but it is a blow regardless

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

FYI, UVM announced captains for the upcoming season:
--Rob Darrar, Captain
--Travis Blanleil, Alternate Captain
--Anthony "Rico" Petruzzelli, Alternate Captain
--Derek Lodermeier, Alternate Captain

Curious to which came first the captain choices or Abramson leaving. Makes you wonder 4 forwards picked including a Soph.

It wouldn't be surprising if it bothered a senior D-man or two.

I'd guess Abramson was gonna be a captain and Lodermeier took his spot when he decided not to play.

I'm wondering if the incoming freshman defensemen were threatening to compete with Abramson for ice time, and he decided his best choice was to make his move now. Maybe I'm trying to put a positive spin on things though.

The real thing that I'm curious about is Darrar coming out of nowhere, he didn't even have a letter last year IIRC

I expected Blanleil, tbh. But if Sneddon's thinking the way I'm thinking when it comes to lines perhaps he'd rather give the C to a guy that will play game-in and game-out.

Lodermeier was captain of Brooks, BTW, so it's not like he hasn't been a leader before.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Feels weird knowing there is going to be hockey this weekend when it will be close to 90 out.

Not sure what I really think about this team. I really like what they have up front (especially center) and the recruiting class is an exciting group. I think Ross Colton is going over 40 points, and I hope we see him and Misely playing together, at least on the PP.

I really worry about the defense. We saw last year how it cost this team(and Stef's Sv%) down the strech. Losing Ori Abramson isn't helpful. I hold out hope that Massie and O'Donnell can make a big jump in year two.

Seriously. This weather is the worrrrrst. I live in MAT this year, my room's been 80+ degrees ever since I got back. It's like a sauna. Bring me the bloody winter already so I'm not boiling in my room.

I think the defense issue was a lack of size issue. Easy to bully the opposing goalie when he's small and you're playing against a bunch of defenders who lack the size and strength to deal with your screens. Even without Ori, Evers is 6'2, Massie 6'5, and Thomas is 6'4, so I think we'll be fine, it's just one less number back there.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

UVM not ranked in the USCHO preseason top 20 (last team out - and I'll say we're better than a few of the teams ahead of us). Pegged for sixth in the HE poll.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

I hope I wasn't the only one not impressed with the media day stream.....

It was nice to hear coach like the incoming d and say that the forwards are the 'deepest' he's had, but not much else really.
I guess i was hoping for a bunch more enthusiasm.
He did say they would continue to play up tempo aggressive style, which is nice

Go Cats Go!

The quality of the stream or what was going on? (ie lack of questions)
