UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Anyone know anything about this Waterloo team? I did a quick search but didn't find a whole lot.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Looks like Packy Munson will be playing for Michigan Tech after being screwed over by Denver. Probably the best available option for him although Houghton is no Burlington.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

How'd Denver screw him over?

Before we get into details, let's remember that Munson's stated reason for leaving UVM was to be closer to his family. He's a Minnesota kid so presumably that's where the family he wants to be closer to lives. But if I remember my geography correctly, Denver isn't much closer to Minnesota than is Burlington.

Denver may or may not have "enticed" Munson with the idea that he'd be the backup and heir apparent to incumbent Tanner Jaillet on a team that is a perennial national power. What is a fact, however, is that Denver recruited a hotshot goalie prospect (Dayton Rasmussen -- ironically another Minnesota kid) out of the USHL, who was immediately pronounced the backup and (presumably) heir apparent. Munson's name disappeared from the Denver web page at the same time Rasmussen's appeared. In the aftermath, Munson snagged a spot with Michigan Tech, which while not exactly the Paris of the upper Midwest, is at least a whole lot closer to Minnesota.

Denver's parting of ways with Munson IMO has a certain odor to it; but then Munson's sudden parting with UVM didn't smell right either.

It was reported, here in Denver, as a mutual parting of ways, probably due to the aforementioned signing of Dayton Rasmussen. Not sure if the staff wasn't all that impressed with Munson during practice last year, or if Rasmussen was just too good to pass up.

With Beef leaving tech after one year, there's definitely an opportunity for him to start this season, so, good for him. Edit: that's certainly not an opportunity he'd have here in Denver, this year at least, and maybe not ever.

Finished 8th of 10 in the OUA West Division...pretty much your typical USports team full of junior washouts. They got slaughtered 8-1 by Miami last year, and Miami was not a very good team.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Maybe Packy had a legitimate beef with Sneddon, I don't know, but he could have been "The Man" at UVM! Not such a bad thing....

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Do you think he would have beaten out Lekkas? I think that would have been a tight competition.
The jury's still out on both of them but yes, given the choice right now, I'd take Packy over Lekkas. I prefer big goalies like Joe Fallon over guys like Madore, Santaguida, etc.

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Are we at the point for guessing lines/pairings?

I'll give it a go.....couldn't be more wrong than last year after coach said he would keep the combos together longer.....

Bowen/Colton/Coughlin
Blanleil/Darrar/Petro
Priv/Puffer/Coughlin
Misley/Lodermeier/Alvaro
Esposito/Best/O'Neil/Vlad/Kaufman/Cowans/Frechette

Ori/O'Donnell
Phillips/Massie
Moriarty/Evers
Grant/Thomas/Kelly

Lekkas
Harmon/Beck

We'll see how close...
Hope the boys can gel lines early so coach doesn't put the names in the blender and see what comes out.....

No way in hell Misley starts on the fourth line - he's an instant top six forward. I also think Vlad is in the top 9 somewhere and Grant in the top 6. Think you're valuing experience a bit much. (Also, you have Coughlin twice)

I do think Colton and Bowen should stay together, that was such an effective duo.

Harmon is 6'2", so we've finally got size in goal again. I feel like that was an achilles heel last year, since Feeley never played

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

My guesses for lines:

Privitera - Colton - Bowen
Puffer - Misley - Coughlin
Dzhioshvili - Darrar - Petruzzelli
Alvaro - Lodermeier - Best

Swap in Blanleil, Cowans, Esposito, Fréchette, Kaufman, O'Neil as needed

Massie - O'Donnell
Phillips - Abramson
Evers - Grant

Swap in Kelly, Thomas, Moriarty as needed

Lekkas
Harmon
Beck

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Am I crazy, or when you look at these lines and pairings do you also think we have more depth than we've had in a long time?

Seems like we should have the ability to generate more offense (famous UVM fan last words).

Anyway, I'm excited.

I honestly feel the same way, but I'm always overly optimistic so take my opinion with a pinch of salt.

Glad I'm not the one paid to figure this stuff all out =P

Re: UVM 2017/18: A Gutt Check

Mark that as 3 optimistic about the upcoming season. Looks like the lineup of skaters is the best in a long
time (look for Colton and Bowen to have banner years)...my only "iffy" is in goal. As good as Lekkas was,
he's unfortunately just too small to carry a division 1 team.

BTW...anyone know how to dispute a "reputation" on here? Some Maine fan got mad when i mentioned
we were 15th in Pairwise last season after beating the Black Bears

I honestly feel the same way, but I'm always overly optimistic so take my opinion with a pinch of salt.

Harmon was USPHL goalie of the year last year. While that is a far lower quality of play than the USHL where Stef played, that's still a nice achievement. He's also got some size at 6'2"

Fun fact: He was a multi-sport athlete in high school. In addition to being a top-class hockey goalie he was one of his conference's best attackers in lacrosse.

Oops......We don't have two Coughlins?...

I agree Misley will get uber love from Sneddon and probably get top 6 minutes.
There are a LOT of centers on the team now it seems.
You seem to have Best and Puffer moved out of the middle, which seems to be a good idea. With Darrar, Lodermeier, and Colton and Misley in the pivot.
Hope that is the case for winning faceoffs and generating a little more offensive firepower.
Nice mix of bigger and smaller players too.
You are on the pulse it looks like. Cant wait for the season!

Misley deserves it, to be fair. Very very talented player (dude was a PPG in the OJHL playoffs while playing with an injured foot that hampered his mobility). But I don't see how you break up Colton/Bowen to start the year after they clicked so well last year. I'd say the third man on that line is either Privitera or Puffer as their skill sets are probably the most similar to Puskarich, who was the third man on that line last year.

I'm a bit biased on Vlad being so high up (I'm a fan of Russian hockey, and he played for a youth team in the area I'm from - shoutout to the WBS Knights), but I think he's probably #2 after Misley in terms of our forward recruits.

I think that center lineup should basically be set in stone. Hoping Darrar can stay healthy this year, Sneddon was really high on him going into last season. And I expect to see rotation on the bottom 6 wings. (Reminder - O'Neil is still a sophomore as he got a medical redshirt after missing much of last year with a torn ACL. I liked some of what I saw from him as a freshman and even early last year before his injury. And the freshmen should get their chances to show what they can do.) Stability at center is really important in my opinion as they're sort of the "hub" of the team.

On D, I tried to keep pairings lefty-righty, although I'm not sure if handedness affects our lineups, especially since we only have three righties (MOD, Abramson, and Grant). I really like this year's defense as there's a lot of flexibility. Last year we saw what happened when we lost one of our two defenders with good size (over 6') - it was easy for bigger, more physical teams to bully around the net and get good screens, which hurts when your starting keeper lacks size himself. Now, you've at least got wiggle room with the 6'2 Evers and the 6'4 Thomas coming in. I'm also REALLY high on Grant and think he will be a UVM captain some day.

Is it October yet??? or even media day lol
