UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

well i can sum up today's game in one word UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
debate as you wish if that is a real word but sentiment remain.

I'd agree with your sentiment. It's dissappointing to give away a HE point. UMass has been coming back in the 3rd all year against teams and managed a much better record then anyone expected. UVM should have been prepared for a 3rd period comeback try and really buckled down. You can't give up a 3 goal lead in the 3rd. There's no excuse for that.

We feel your pain. Watched the third and know exactly how you feel. Hope we are ready for them Friday.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

All I'll say about coaching vs. recruiting is that coaching does matter. Bazin took essentially the same team that won 5 games the season prior to over 20 wins and has kept it there (and despite seldom getting blue chip recruits). Leaman pretty much built Union into an NC title team and did the same at Providence within 4 years. I live in the Albany NY area and saw Sneddons teams at Union that had very little talent, but would say that he continues to still coach with a bit of a "not to lose" mentality. Don't get me wrong, Leaman's style has plenty of this too and it does make the Cats a very tough team to play against (at least most of the time), but there does seem to be something missing to consistently get them over the hump.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Imagine how many lies were told to those 23 young men to get them to say yes...

So you think that not only is Sneddon a bad coach that can't recruit but also an unethical liar that is snowballing kids into committing to UVM? Sorry but Sneddon strikes me as a pretty upstanding guy and ethical guy.

Ever stop to think that the recruiting is what it is because he isn't telling kids lies... perhaps if he were to start lying maybe we'd be getting some blue chippers. Remember how good UNH used to be before Umile got busted...

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Why has this thread turned into a "Lets blame the coach" contest? It wasnt Sneddon who couldnt hit a lose puck in front of
a empty net in OT. The players have to take most of the blame for blowing a 3 goal lead and not putting the game away when
the chance was there. People keep forgetting these are 18-22yo players who when things go bad tend to lose focus and show
their age.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Good lucks to the Cats today against BC! It's not hockey, but I'll still take an NCAA tourney win against BC. Go Cats Go!!!

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

That is a bit much. Never had any issues with his integrity and belief and support in the UVM hockey program.

I agree. I do not see any evidence of any lack of integrity from the coaching staff in the recruiting process and the administration of the team.
My beef is a chip it out defensive zone strategy and a dump it in offensive strategy that gives the puck right back to the other team. The intensity required for the chase aspect of both strategies does not seem to be present for 3 periods, ever.
We are up 3-2 in a HE game and UMASS pulls its goalie and we have a freshman who is a defensive liability on the ice.....oh, UMASS scores as he stands beside the guy who puts it in. THAT bothers me.

Umile got busted?? For what? I thought it was the previous Northeastern coach that got in trouble.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Make that 22. According to the Quinnipiac thread recruit Joe O'Connor has decommitted and is now heading to Quinnipiac.

I will not speak to the ethics of Sneddon but of those 22 now I will not be surprise to see more drop off that list. UVM seems to recruit guys then defer them year after year basically up to the 21 year old mark because they bring in older guys each year right away that strategy cannot last and people going to drop off or if they recruited very young it will turn out they do no develop and dont even end up here much like that first 14 year old recruit they got who is now at like Oswego had offer pulled because not good enough.
my guess is that what catmandoo is refering to telling kids they will be able to enroll one year then defer them if that is true I would see that as a problem. for one it means you dont think those players ready or good enough yet and two it means you having to add spots because your team is not good enough and you need to fill holes in roster. Or it means you think you got a better player and tell that player to go somewhere else.

and Jayden UNH was busted in 2009 http://www.seacoastonline.com/article/20090724/SPORTS/307249858
too much emailing but I think he is just a matter of being there too long and getting stale which in back of my mind you have to worry about with sneddon.

Interesting article posted on the Maine thread in regards to the challenges and parity in today's college hockey and how now there are very few teams that can consistently stay on top. Fits into our discussion on Sneddon's success here at UVM to a degree.

By the way Maine has scored 2 goals in their last 5 games and are last in the country. Granted 4 of those 5 games against top ranked teams Lowell and BC. Let's see if we can keep them under 3 tonight..... in the last 10 minutes of the 3rd :--).

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

My issues with the current coaching:
1. Undisciplined penalties. This has been a constant for the last couple years and the coaching staff has not addressed it. Taking a penalty after a goal should earn you a seat on the end of the bench for the rest of game.
2. Whoever is coaching the goalies NEEDS to get Santaguida to stop lunging for the puck and ending up sprawled out on his stomach.
3. Completely ineffective power play highlights the issues with the dump and chase offense. The team can not complete two passes in a row. Passing is a skill (rather than a talent) that good coaching improves.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Wow did the Maine lumberjacks take us to the woodshed in the 1st two periods. That was horrible. As J24vt mentioned we couldn't complete a pass on our life. On a positive note the third was a completely different game and I thought we were going to tie it up there at the end. Watched on my phone so it was hard to see all the penalties in the second and how legit they were. Felt like the refs didn't want to play 5 on 5 hockey. If they can bring the level of play of the 3rd period to the next game we might actually win.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

The last couple of games I've counted on my hands how many times I say to myself, "who's that pass to?" Every period I run out of fingers. What kind of offensive strategy is this? Is there another strategy that I don't see and they are just not executing it, or is this actually what the coaches are aiming for? Lots of questions. What am I missing?

Yes to all points this is on coaching and the new goalie coach is former goalie Jeff Hill becayse Lovelette retired last year
As for that Maine article while the points may be accurate in some respect I feel that only builds into excuses it does not seem like Red is making excuses for his team I like that in him from that article Sneddon I feel especially the very bad years kept chalking up the facilities/major juniors/prep schools and all that as excuses for not being good they may factor but you should never have excuses. good coaching and good eye for talent that you can meld into team will make any team good regardless where they play. This team has enough talent it should be good
Seeming clear that the coaching part right now with the style in which UVM play is lacking and it is a concern I was optimist on this team would be midpack and be challengers late on for next year a real push into top 3 because they lose nobody really of important outside Pattyn next year now I am not so sure. It is like Sneddon coaching without the pressure of getting a contract extension now has led to this

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Well that was a tale of 2 games last night. Thought Maine came out and really played strongly from the get-go. It was apparent they really wanted the win and were prepared to do what it takes to get it. So kudos to them for that. Conversely, my god, could our play have been any more lackadaisical? Maine took it to us and we didn't have the slightest answer. As others have alluded to, we couldn't complete a pass to save our lives, and the defense apparently got left behind in Burlington. I mean, someone blew right by Phillips when the score was still 0-0 and skated in all alone on Santa, who fortunately made a point-blank save. Don't know what the heck Phillips was thinking, or if he even was. For whatever reason, he appeared to be cheating toward the inside of the ice, even though he had help there from the other defenseman, and the Maine guy just went right around him and in all alone. That seemed to be the story of the 1st period and the Cats were very fortunate to go into the intermission down only 1-0.

The end of the 2nd period and entirety of the 3rd period was probably some of the best hockey I've ever seen a UVM team play, and I've been following closely since the mid 80s! The backcheck and forecheck were relentless, we had soooo many great scoring chances, and we dominated Maine territorially and in time of possession. I mean complete and total domination like we were playing a pee wee team! We imposed our will and Maine had no answer. While great, it's too bad we have to be down 3-0 before we find our game and begin playing with any sense of urgency or intensity. It'll be interesting to seen which team shows up tonight. If we get the 3rd period team, we'll win going away. If it's the other team, well, we know what happens.
