Utica University 2024-25 - Retooled and Reloaded

Grew up not far from Canton. Went to alot of SLU/Clarkson games, always a packed house.
I was at the last game played in Walker Arena, March 16 (?), 1991! The athletic director at Utica College got me tickets to see Wisconsin play Clarkson in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Clarkson won 5-4 and took the best of 3 game series 2-0. The place literally was a barn.

My very first D1 game in person was in Walker Arena versus St, Lawrence. Absolute insanity! (The only thing which ever came close was Romney Fieldhouse against Plattsburgh.)

I remember years later meeting a co-worker who went to Clarkson. He said he was always a hockey fan. But after attending games in Walker, he could never watch an NHL game again. He said nothing could match the excitement of a game in Walker. It ruined him trying to watch other hockey.

Nubs may disagree, but I think Utica finally earned the "perennial national contender" title this weekend. They came within a post of a championship last night.
Absolutely. No more shade on Utica.

They played three (the first round was kind of a gimme) amazing games. All high quality. All superb discipline defense. All never say die. And perhaps even more importantly, they were able to make the adjustments, especially against the Hobart forecheck, to put themselves at just a good of a chance to win as their opponent. They did not fold. They merely got beat by the inches (heck, millimeters) of hockey.

I don't know about other Utica fans, but throughout the season, I never had in my mind that this might be “the” team. So as much as yesterday’s loss hurt, it has me excited for what they might be able to come back and do next year.

At the beginning of the season, I heard from an opposing coach that he was very afraid of Utica.

Yep. Well said.

I don't think you can credibly can argue that the overtime was not an absolute, EPIC nailbiter. Could have gone either way. Congrats to the Pio's on an amazing season.

Also, I used to love the old ECAC-West battles....and I think the last two tourney games were about as good as it gets.....so I am psyched to see these teams will be testing each other next year in non-conference play. Iron sharpens iron...kudos to both programs for making this happen.

Great season for the U,sucks in the end but still a season to look back on, I am sure coach will have a bunch of new transfers coming in next year to replace the ones he is losing...Great job..

What a story for Piros! Start the season seeing tons of shots playing on the weakest team (but becoming competitive) in arguably the best top-to-bottom D3 league. Transfer at semester break and end up being a key component on a team playing in overtime of the national championship.

Hobart is a machine. Beaver is insanely skilled, and smart. (Will he EVER graduate, for the love of God???)

The better team won last night, if mostly by dint of superior conditioning down the stretch. Utica played balls-out, but was clearly gassed in the late going.

One good thing (actually, the only good thing) about growing old is gaining some perspective and objectivity. I was disappointed with the outcome, but- on occasion- the Hockey Gods get it right.

(Oh, and Piros was great, despite my earlier doubts. He didn't take a back seat to his counterparts in either FF game.)

he might take a backseat anyway. poty/goty shane soderwall just hit the portal. wouldnt be shocked at all of one of heenans agents was in contact with him already. its not like he got a great view of the facilities or had time to tour campus/the city a few days ago. Maybe the only way to stop the beaver/goyer combo at hobart is to get ur own beaver/goyer combo

There will be multiple D1 teams after him. He has played his last game at the D3 level.

This. There was no reason to leave Curry with a very likable coach and being king of the hill to go to another D3 school. He's got to be going D1.
Ya think? I don't remember any D-3 goalie ever doing that, but I tend to forget shit on occasion.

I do think that he'd garner a lot of interest among the lesser D-1 programs, just the same.

In a similar vein, anybody see Beaver getting a shot at The Show, a la Herbert decades ago? (As in, an AHL tryout.)

Tom Aubrun (Norwich) signed a deal with an AHL team (Blackhawks organization) right out of college. He played in a couple games, but mainly settled into the ECHL team for a couple years before returning back to Europe to play out his career.

D3 to NHL isn’t unheard of. Norwich had 3 players get to the NHL. Someone used to have a list somewhere. It was a long time ago but I think it had 20-25 names on it and I’m unsure how many more of have been added recently. There have been a couple of EBug goalies that played D3 that have ended up suiting up for NHL teams in recent years.
