Utica College: The gang's all here.

I think the reason for the move (I don’t have first hand information on this) but Utica has been trying to get into a more competitive league for some time now. With Hobart and Elmira gone doesn’t leave for a competitive league. Neumann and Manhattanville aren’t the teams they used to be. Naz and Stevenson aren’t that great either. Wilkes has been great addition to league being a new program. Kings, Chatham speak for themselves. After the Nexus Center is done I would assume Utica would have some of the best facilities to use.

100% agree.

*But* playing in a weak league gives UC the inside lane to an AQ, as well.

My question to you is why do you think they will struggle in D1? A 19-20 year old junior player will choose Utica over any other AHA school. 95% of the time they don’t care about academics, they get to play in the best atmosphere in the AHA and share a rink with an AHL team. You will undoubtedly see kids get a shot with the Comets if UC goes D1. Heck, we’ve seen UC kids get a shot with the Comets when they were D3…

IMO there's a gaping talent-gap between UC and a good D-1 team. Heenan would have to turn the entire roster over (aside from Dickson, perhaps) and that would take years.

I agree that it's likely UC would eventually have a recruiting advantage in the AHA (should they be invited), but the AHA is D-1 Lite. It's not a conference that attracts top talent nor one that contends for the NC.

It's not that I won't continue to be a hard-core fan if they make the move, but I think it's a bad one. UC is in a great place right now.

"If it ain't broke..."

I agree that UC would be cannon fodder for years to come. What's wrong having a powerhouse D3 program with the highest attendance (over 3000) a game ? Full rinks are great, better for everyone !

And it takes years to make the transition to move up before the NCAA recognizes your new classification. You aren’t even eligible for the National playoffs until that transition is complete. So you have the time to get the talent built up.

Have you heard anything definitive?

Definitive? That's a laugh. Faculty have no idea that there is any talk of changing athletic status. Nothing has been said to us at all. (Other changes, yes, but not related to athletics.) Should an announcement come out soon, it will be a complete surprise to almost all. All I am working on is rumors I have heard here and some internal rumors (???) within certain student groups.

Exactly, Shabby.

UC won't garner a berth via The D-1 Show for the next 10 years, at the very least... And maybe they'll NEVER get one, aside from a randomly possible AQ. Then, they'd just take up a little space as a #16 seed, and go home.

On the other side of the coin, tonight's game was a classic. Wilkes is a terrific D-3 team, and while I generally despise shoot-outs, this one was exciting. Utica is absolutely where it needs to be, IMO.

Big fish/small pond is better than to be awash in the ocean.

That is not what was said at all, and you know this. Norwich, Stevens Point, St. Norbert and Oswego are perennial national contenders. Maybe Trinity. As good as Adrian has been they only have one win ever at Frozen Four. Plattsburgh, Middlebury, Superior and River Falls used to be perennial national powers but have regressed.

This is a message board, a place where discussions are held. Fishman made a statement and I asked him to support his hypothesis. So far nobody has been able to and the only response from the Utica camp has been ad hominem attacks. Until somebody answers the question with something concrete I will keep asking it.

Not often do you see “perennial national contenders” get outscored 14-6 in a weekend….

Contenders or pretenders Mr Nubs?

"Miss Nubby", Dawg. Say it right!

Evidently, SNC isn't the world-beater that nubbers described.

Who knew???

The results of this past weekend are irrelevant to your initial statement and the questions that followed, which was discussing the merit of your claim that Utica is a perennial national contender. A statement you have STILL failed to even remotely try to back with evidence. Let's try to keep our eye on the ball here. I know it is hard for you, TrumpFish.

Time will tell about this season. Even if SNC makes the tournament and falls short of winning it all, they are still perennial national contenders. The five NCAA banners hanging in their arena do all the backing of that claim.

That said, it still has nothing to do with the original claim about Utica being a PERENNIAL contender. Jury is still definitely out there.

By that logic Middlebury is also a perennial national contender.

Like I said perennial national contenders don’t get beat like that in statement games, back to back.

Quit obfuscating. It has nothing to do with the original question, which is about Utica.

Utica College is now Utica University effective immediately per a news release. Official announcement tomorrow morning. Hmmmmmmm

When was Middlebury's last national title? 2001?

SNC won the second to last national championship.

That St Norbert thread must be pretty lifeless.

You and Steve (Fishman) made it about St. Norbert. I simply asked about what makes Utica a perennial national contender. Still waiting for a fact-based answer to the question.

As for your Middlebury analogy, you are way off again. St. Norbert has won all of its national titles since Middlebury won its last one. Including, as it was pointed out, the next-to-last one contested.

That St Norbert thread must be pretty lifeless.

It's as flat-line as Miss Nubby's EEG.

Therefore she p****** all over herself here... Lucky us.

Getting back to hockey, is there any scenario in which UC (UU?) can't win the UCHC RS? I can't find one, but I don't grasp all the nuance.

Looks like Utica is actually attempting migrate to D-1. That's a very silly move.

Get used to being hammered, UC, and never having a realistic shot at an NC. It won't work. Examine the history.

(This whole thing could be complete bullshit, and I hope it is, because it's a ridiculous to go there. But of course we're relying on one poster.)
