Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Trying to find the latest DIII Manual but I did come up with this from 2010...

"Faceoff for preliminary-round competition shall be determined by the host institution.
However, the committee reserves the right to set game times, if necessary. The
committee recommends a 7 p.m. (local time) for the first and quarterfinal rounds."

However.....

"The three first-round games are held the Wednesday before the quarterfinals.
Quarterfinals are held on the Saturday before the semifinals and final. The semifinals
and final are held on the third full weekend in March (including Friday)"

It also states...

"The Division III championship shall comprise 11 teams. The championship
playoff format involves three single first-round games and four quarterfinal games
that are played on the campuses of the participating institutions"

meaning you can't go and play at another rink if I remember correctly from the last time this happened....

But per the 2011 Womens DIII Hockey handbook....

"First-round competition may be held Friday, Saturday or Sunday; the committee
has designated Saturday as the preferred day of competition. Face-off for first-round
competition shall be determined by the host institution. However, the committee
reserves the right to set game times, if necessary."

Keep in mind, Utica would also have to schedule a 60 minute practice for the visiting team both the day before and day of the game.

Again, you can't go by what the handbook says because last I knew a cowbell isn't a safety issue at a hockey game....

"The NCAA site representative
and games committee may remove any artificial noisemakers that may cause a safety
concern to the players, coaches and fans,"

Re: Ouch!!!

It does stink that this will happen, but that is the chance you take when using a publicly owned facility that is controlled by others. Now that the program is strong thought should be put into Utica College building its own arena. You have to understand that the Aud is a county facility and as I posted above still has NY State influence. I am sure the Aud would love to host a NCAA game, but commitments are commitments and they just can't change it now.

It has to be at the rink that you used for the majority of your home games. That means Utica has only the option of bidding to host at the Aud. Since there is an existing contract, they are truly up a creek with out a canoe.

If they can't change it, Utica can't bid on it, and without a bid, they won't host. Those are the NCAA rules. If they already have an event under contract, they won't dump it for the speculative hope of a possible NCAA quarterfinal. The NCAA is not flexible about dates or times. 7:00 Saturday it is. If you can't host a game at that time, you can't host.

Re: Ouch!!!

Thanks for the informative posts re: this problem, guys. It's great when visitors are here to contribute something of interest. (Seriously.)

Looks like UC screwed itself a bit on this arrangement with The Aud. It's possible that the HS tournament might be moved to Sunday, but I doubt the politics will fly, nor should they, really...

The HS championships are really very entertaining, and having them sited here is something of a feather in dreary Utica's cap. The crowds vary in size and never approach a sellout, but having everyone come here to vie for the hardware certainly gives The Aud a state-wide visibility that surpasses anything a local D-3 team could generate.

More significantly, trying to sell this re-do to NYS hockey-moms will likely result in several deaths, and I'm not referring to the "moms" dying... Those women comprise perhaps the most vicious and vengeful subset of American society, as I'm sure many of you already know, and they're just not going to take any crap, period.

I suppose we'll see, but if UC is scheduled to play on the 9th, I'm guessing that it'll be elsewhere. That is a pitfall of playing on rented ice. (Yeah, plenty of D-3 teams do that, but I'm guessing that there is little serious competition for ice-time, in most of those little barns.)

I'm curious... Does the siting automatically default to the opponent's home ice, or is there a provision for some reasonably-located middle-ground? (Pretty sure that I know the answer to that one, but thanks!)

Re: Ouch!!!

You know what I mean.

No, I know what you said, denigrating the HS hockey playoffs and laying claim to a venue that your team's school did not reserve in advance. The dates of the NCAA playoff games are clearly laid out.

I asked that question awhile back, does Utica have plans for a campus rink??

According to the NYSHSHCA web site, they have the Aud locked in through 2014 for that weekend

I believe when this happened a few years ago, it went to the opponent's home ice. My question would be, what would the NCAA do if neither team was able to put in a bid to host?

great info as always

If I recall, it was this game from the 2011 tournament. Hamline was spposed to host, but their regular facility had been under renovations all seasons, and their replacement facility for the season had aleady melted down the ice for basketball. Despite their regular rink being back up and running, the NCAA said you have to have played at least 50% of your home games in that rink that season, so Superior got to host.

As to what would happen if neither team put in a bid to host... I wouldn't be surprised if the championship committee shuffled things around to ensure that every team had a host.

+1. I enjoy going to the NYS championships each year to see where the future College (D1 and DIII) are coming from. There have also been a few NHL players too. In fact, there are 2 player on UC right now that came from CNY hockey. One thing we shouldn't over look is the NCAA likes money and I think the they may make an exception (maybe not) as 4,000 tickets sold with a big chunck going to them may be too much to pass up. Time will tell.

The money factor theory went out the window last year when the Plattsburgh-Amherst game went to Amherst. Most everyone on the forum had the two picked to play each other but thought for sure the game would be at Stafford! NOT

So I guess it's the "(maybe not)" part. Oh well, it is what it is. First they have to get a bid. You know, chickens hatch type stuff. I just hope I don't have to travel too far to see the games if they do make it in. Lots of hockey left before that.

And some still insist that EC should move to the First Arena. $$$$$ Talk. Guaranteed money wins every time, the more, the better.

Re: Ouch!!!

Re: Ouch!!!

On a completely unrelated note...

Anyone know where I can find video of Utica's recent victory at the Cooler in Geneva against Hobart? Been looking on Youtube under Hobarts' athletic page but they havn't put it up yet. They've put up video highlights of every home game thus far but still no Utica highlights. I know you don't want to comprise a highlights package of your team losing but they have the highlight video up of them losing to Oswego in Overtime.

So someone let me know if you can find or know of a video or highlights of that game, it'd be appreciated :)

I don't think you understand the point many of us have been trying to make about moving to First Arena. We realize the college probably doesn't want to pay the money, but we think it would be more attractive for recruits and would be a bit more exciting to watch a game because the Domes are never near capacity anymore. Some times cheaper isn't better!!!

My argument isn't about it being right or wrong, it's about WHY the College won't make the move. I'll go wherever they go but MY own preference is still the Domes. Hopefully there will be 2 more games there this year, not just the 1 scheduled reg. season game.
