Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

I do believe UC still has (albeit slim) hope to possibly get in. It's a tall order but...
1) Beat EC tomorrow; 2) beat M'ville and EC to win the W tourney; 3) other expected conference AQs hold serve.
UC then finishes 2-1-1 vs. EC and 2-2 vs. M'ville.
If these planets don't align it's see you next year.

That about sums it up perfectly win and your in (unless all hell breaks loss in a couple of the AQ conferences i.e neither Oswego nor Platty win the SUNYAC)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

If Utica wants a home game for the playoffs, they would have to finish 4th not third, which is the best thay can finish. That being said, don't expect anymore home games this year ;-)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

I don't think that's true at all. Not to pile on, but i think it's been stated that the chance of UTICA getting a berth is a long shot. In fact, if you look at the last 3 bracketology posts on "the other site", they still have BOTH Elmira and M'ville getting Pool Cs. That, of course, barring any conference tourney upsets.

But if everyone who is supposed to win their AQ does...I wouldn't be shocked to see Elmira and M'ville get in. WILL everyone who is supposed to win their AQ win their AQ? Probably not.

Does Utica still have a chance? Maybe, but they need some serious help. The NCAA did Elmira a favor by ranking Fredonia, which gave them a bump in SOS and RNK.

There are going to be 8 AQs and 3 at-large invitations, if what I read on this site is accurate. If all the favorites hold serve in their respective tournaments, I was thinking that Plattsburgh and Castleton would get two of the ALs, and that the best the W could hope for would be the last remaining one.

So, assuming the above, I could see UC getting in if they win out. The W is so bunched-up that the tournament champ should probably get the nod, as long as it's not Hobart.

What a system!

Sure would be fun if the field was expanded to 16, but I am led to believe that that would result in something akin to convening an emergency Constitutional Convention while pigs take wing and flaming meteors ravage the planet, sending Mother Earth spinning wildly off her orbit and into cold space...

Eschewing that obviously catastrophic option, how about just making it a meritocracy of sorts?

I don't think Castleton has enough to get in. Again, if you go strictly by the numbers and assume all of the favorites win their AQ, the Pool Cs (strictly by the numbers) would be Elmira, M'Ville and Plattsburgh.

You also have to remember, even if Utica beats Elmira and then wins the tourney, that doesn't guarantee them anything. The final numbers will tell the tale. Does Uitca still have a chance? Sure, but they need help. Like I said before, Elmira got a boost in SOS and RNK, thanks to the NCAA putting Fredonia in the rankings. Once they are ranked, they are ranked for the season.

I beseech you: what set of "number" are we talking about..?

D-3 (apparently?) doesn't use KRACH or PW at all, and if there is some official stats-based NCAA ranking system, I haven't been able to find it... I thought that the AL bids were at the discretion/whim of the selection committee, and that it wasn't bound to any objective metric whatsoever.

Yes, UC is likely dead in the water after losing once again to EC, but I'm still keenly interested in seeing something that serves as an objective set of criteria. If you could point me in the direction of that, I'd be grateful. Thank you in advance.

(Fort Knox should be as tough a nut to crack as D-3 hockey, FCS!)

Go here please, there are objective criteria, as I've said before.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Jeez Louise, thank you very much! I must have missed your earlier link. This is a good read on the process, at long last, even if it's not particularly enlightening as to the criteria involved nor the accountability to same of the committee.

I didn't know D3.com existed... I was barking up the wrong tree looking at the official NCAA site and inch.com, etc. It never showed-up in the first few pages of a Google search, either, but I'll bookmark it and (maybe) reduce the numbers of clueless posts I submit as a result.

I was sure that tonight's loss at Elmira was the final nail in UC's coffin, but perhaps if they beat both EC and MC in the W tournament they still could squeak in, assuming a perfect storm re: the way-too-many-AQs situation.

(Certainly not holding my breath on that one, though.)

It is the same set of criteria/process as used in every D3 sport - as per NCAA legislation. In every sport the field is regulated by the 1:6.5 ratio, and the minimum size of a conference for an AQ is 7. The at large bids are basically generated by "surplus" teams - availability of Pool B/C spots depends on how far over 6.5 teams each conference goes.

That's the reason I kept referring to "the other website." Technically, it's a competing site, so we don't often post direct links there.

Also, the NCAA released their first set of rankings earlier in the week. There's a whole thread discussing it here:

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Now that Hobart downed Manhattanville, you are absolutely right. Here's to hoping you good folks get to see one more game at the Aud this season! ;)

Cheers!!!
Dave, that would be great at this point. However, we have been the victim several times of Elmira giving away points to teams other than UC and it biting us! :( Lets all hope Elmira wins one for the Gipper tomorrow. ;)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Yes, thanks, I remember that much from your earlier posts. What I was referring to was the (apparently) implicit existence of some statistical metric being applied. It seemed to me that some set of hard-and-fast criteria were in play, since the teams were numerically ranked on that site, by whatever cryptic method it generated/borrowed.

(Probably wrong about that one, too!)

I think at times some of us, who are used to the process at this point, can tend to forget just how hard it can be to understand for a newcomer, and then get frustrated when that newcomer just doesn't understand. Thankfully, Matt and Josh over at D3hockey are putting out that bracketology and explaining the process in detail. But as has been said, it's a competitor website, thus we tend to not post direct links all too often.

USCHO does have DI Bracketology Blog and LAST year, USCHO's Chris Lerch gave us this, but this year USCHO gave us

USCHO DIII Bracketology

USCHO DIII Bracketology

It probably should be noted that Chris's DIII blog was dated February 24 last year, which was just-prior to many conference tournament semi-finals. The ECAC NE and MASCAC regular seasons were still in-progress. If we apply the same timeline to this year, we may see something on the topic this coming Thursday (2/23).

Stay tuned... (?) :(

EDIT: I'm not saying the absence of any bracketology publication by USCHO staff is justified, but I suppose that with the extreme amount of speculation that exists while the regular season is in-progress, they may be of the opinion that such discussion is best suited for the boards. I really can't say for sure, but after all (as norm1909 showed)... they are doing it for DI.

With apologies, Utica folks... back to your regularly-scheduled Utica forum topics!! :o

That is true, Finger's crossed ;) And I will give Chris credit for wearing many hats, perhaps ...

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

After 1 period of play at Neumann it is Elmira 0 - Neumann 0. SOG 15 EC - 7 NU.

Elmira has started back up goalie, Matt Milne who is 3-0 with two wins against Morrisville and one against Fredonia.

An Elmira win (or tie) means Neumann travels to the Aud Wednesday night. A Neumann win means Utica travels to Neumann.
