Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

All this buzz, anticipation, and european success is motivating me to actually get the site going again after a long. boring, newsless summer off....and hopefully the forums too.

however i don't know how much extra excitement i can take until this season gets started. We're t-minus 51 days(maybe 52 depending on how you look at it) until the puck drops for the RMC exhibition, and although it's the first day of class, there's a lot of students here, and i've talked to a few, who are very, very excited for this season to get underway because it's going to be special, there's no doubt about that. I mean just look at the returning depth at every position on the ice. the forward group is pretty much intact, the defense has another year under their belt after a rough time 2 years ago(although many of them didn't return), and Evan Smith has one of the best catching gloves i've seen since the inaugural season. And therrien is going to get plenty of solid minutes as well.

As for our friends(?) in Oswego, you're on notice. Both games of the season series are going to end tied or a one goal victory for either side. At this juncture, i can't see either team being a clear favorite, although having Beckwith back for another season certainly will help your cause. Looks like the vast majority of the lakers are back, really. Fill me in if there's any defections from that roster. But certainly, a great 2 game set up ahead and a great season are on the horizon. :)

With the addition of Cody Adams to the roster of Utica, they very well could have taken the next step in becoming a legit team OUTSIDE of the ECAC West.

I had no idea a kid from plattsburgh would be stepping in this fall as well. I've never actually seen the cards play in person. what can you tell us about Cody's play?

I do not have 100% confirmation he is at the school, but was told by a pretty reliable source over the summer he would be leaving Plattsburgh to pursue a degree that was not offered at Plattsburgh as a family friend offered Cody a job post-graduation and needed this degree to qualify for the job.

Cody was probably Plattsburgh top 3 defensemen and had a strong case to be at the very least an All-Conference team member. Having seen Utica play a few times last year, I would say Cody will be Utica's top Defensemen or at least one of. Not a lot of point production, but one of the more stable defensemen at 6'4'' 210lbs. Great kid off the ice. A quiet giant.

If that's the case, i think he'll play 2nd pair, likely with the freshman mike baird. I can't see coach heenan breaking up etts and slowikowski after the kind of year they had last year. the 5th and 6th slots are a bit more open in terms of competition now, i mean you've got Marshall, Zappia, Baron, Schmitt, and White fighting for those 2 slots, maybe 3 depending on how ready Baird is. But battles in preseason camp bring out the best in all of us.

Should be a great unit regardless of the outcome, we may see a lot of minutes getting spread around between those guys just because of what each of them brings to the table. Against a bruising, physical team, i'd expect to see the aggressive defenseman doug marshall. If we're looking for more pop in the special teams, Zappia may be the guy. i think it's just going to be who gives us the best chance to win on that night because that group has a diverse skill set.

Haven't seen Cody Adams on the roster yet on UCpioneers.com. Anyone know that for sure he is coming and/or is on Utica's roster?

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

I'm expecting Utica to be a powerhouse this year, and still young ! Go Gate !

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Oh absolutely, this crew is the real deal. if they don't let emotion or ego creep in, which is something gary's been stressing this preseason, these boys have the guns to go to lake placid now with a great group of recruits and transfers to shore up the depth across all positions. and we'll know way more than we do right now after this weekend. this is a really, really good looking hockey club.

my preview article for both the men and women will be in tomorrow's uc tangerine, trying not to spoil it until it gets released. after which it will find its way onto pioneer posse for your reading pleasure. i may run through some in-depth stuff after the weekend, the tang article kinda tied me up from doing the website stuff.

RMC will not be a very good test of how good the Pios really are, or are not ;-)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Head Coach Gary Heenen was suspended by the NCAA for tonights Home opener against SUNY Brockport (10/22).

This is a one-game suspention and he will return for the next game the Pioneers play this season.
