Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

I interrupt your selection arguement to bring you the following piece of information:

Less than 24 hours after his college career ended, Tim Coffman has withdrawn from classes and signed with Greenville of the ECHL. He will make his professional debut in Trenton tomorrow night.

I always hate to see announcements like that. I really wonder how many players who do this are able to finish their degrees. I know it's a chance to live the dream, but a college degree is not something to be passed up lightly.

Clearly he was only at Utica for the education.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Sorry !What was with the half full rink, students on break ?

My guess is since the game wasn't included in the season ticket package, this was an actual head count. During regular season games the seats with only a piece of orange paper sitting in them are counted as well. Also, the 'Cuse had a home hoops game last night.

Well, it looks like he got it, at least by withdrawing from classes he won't fail them. Hopefully he can transfer some credits back and/or take some summer classes and still get his degree - particularly if he scheduled his classes right.

Going to my first UC game of the season tonight, hope they win but I'd be very surprised. Neumann had had their # for quite some time now !

Neumann!

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

I have heard of d3 players joining echl teams after their collegiate careers end on a weekend only basis, allowing them to finish up their degrees. Maybe Coffman is too big time for that?

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

He was a second semester senior, so the good news is he's not terribly behind when he decides to go back and finish, whenever that day comes.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

You make it sound like the NCAA Committee is just throwing darts at a board and ranking teams on a whim. Even though the process is not completely objective, we have access to all the numbers. Amherst is ahead of your team because the numbers put them there. Just because Castleton beat your team and you beat Amherst doesn't mean anything. Amherst beats Castleton by the numbers as well. You're team just finished last in their conference. That fact should be enough to kill any arguments you might have left.

Please understand that I wasn't touting Utica as a possible selection as of last night. UC's narrow window of opportunity was slammed shut by NU, and they are nowhere near worthy of any consideration whatsoever for an AL bid... It's not even a close call. That post wasn't about "my" team; my team is quite justifiably calling for tee-times right now.

What I was commenting upon was the possibility of Amherst (should they not get the AQ) receiving an AL bid over Plattsburgh, Castleton or the last team alive in the W, as in being a result of a very bad analysis of the data. (To summarize: Amherst hasn't beaten a good team all year long, whereas PSU and the W's ____ have.)

Excuse me if the references in my post seemed indefinite and confusing to some of you guys... Clearly, I was most certainly not making a case for Utica; there is simply no basis for doing that anymore, considering the past few weeks' results.

Coffman's certain departure was mentioned a few weeks back by Heenan on local sports radio. It wasn't a surprise in these quarters.

He's a very-good-to-outstanding D-3 guy, but I don't see him getting past the low-minors, professionally. My guess is that he'll never play a single game in the AHL.

He's a selfish player all the way around, and especially in terms of taking bad penalties at bad times... And even if he improves his judgment, he simply doesn't have the skill-set to advance his career past the fight-league level, IMO.

There are pretty-much no "elite" hockey players in D-3, and Tim is not an exception. Very few guys with the goods slip through the D-1 cracks.

(I do think Slowitkowski is starting to resemble a D-1 2nd-pairing guy, though: I like his chances to see The Show waaaaay better than Tim's... And I'll go on-record with that. "You can't teach size/reach", and he plays with poise and intelligence. I've been very impressed with how he's improved his game.)

Having said all that, I absolutely wish Tim the best. He's been a ton of fun to watch, and I hope his career turns out just as he hopes it will.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

(Off-topic, if a topic remains here, but...)

All of you local Utica fans should perhaps consider attending today's Section 3 final between RFA and West Gennesee at The Aud. (It's gonna be the only hockey we have around here for a spell.)

The two teams have combined for (I think) a 43-1 record, and West Genny has allowed 9 or 10 goals in like, 22 games. (Yes, I will stay true to form and not bother to look anything up.) The same two teams met last year, when Rome's apparent tying goal in the waning seconds was very mysteriously waved-off... I expect some lingering resentment, and a great HS game.

And, at the very least, you 'll have the opportunity to look on in wide-eyed amazement as all the hockey-moms get apoplectic... That's quite a spectacle, in and of itself.

What's an "ATO", please? ...And does this mean that he can return to school if he washes out?

Thanks.

Amateur tryout.... Certainly sounds as though he could be gone for a short period (a weekend perhaps) and then return to classes.

The announcement in here said that he has withdrawn from classes, so it sounds like he is expecting more.
