Re: Utica College 2016/2017
What else is there to be said that hasn't been said already? Horrendous refs, hence leading to frustration which lead to the almost 100 penalty minutes. Utica had a huge momentum swing in the 2nd and possibly going into the 3rd but blew that with a bad penalty. I feel the game would have ended much differently if Utica could have kept the emotions in check. I've been going to games since 2007 and by far, one of the worst reffed games I have possibly ever seen. Funny / interesting side-note, overheard someone in the AUD after the game wondering how Heenan still has a job lol. This ship is sinking fast, need something to right it quick or they are in some serious trouble.
I agree. UC almost needs to win out to get a berth at this point, if you look at the statistical data.
And I also tend to agree with the fan at the game. Heenan, as brilliant as his "systems" are, has seriously underachieved here. When you consider the huge recruiting advantage he ought to have in terms of fan support and venue, UC ought to be a perennial power such as Oswego and Platty, but he's only gotten his team to The Show once in 16 seasons.
Then, there are the character issues... I -and everyone else, in some small and quiet rinks- have heard him scream rather vile obscenities at his own team ("Effing kitties" comes to mind, and I paraphrase.) And having cozied-up to many parents over the years, I've heard a bunch of horror stories about his Napoleon-complex behaviors and the capricious choices he's made, just so everyone knows who's boss. I haven't shared 95% of them on here, because they go to hearsay, but I have seen with my own eyes how he'll make a healthy scratch of the most responsible and popular player in his own locker room for no explicable reason other than to show that he
can.
Heenan's mouth (in the Albany Times Union, if memory serves) got him un-hired as a Union assistant years ago when his stock was still a hot commodity. If any D-1 teams have come knocking since then, I'm not aware of it. But that doesn't mean that he's a charity case here in Utica. His results don't warrant tolerating his antics, and I'm surprised that a liberal college such as UC hasn't given him the boot by now. I'll bet that there are dozens and dozens of young (or old) coaches out there who would love to be in his shoes, and who would win a Hell of a lot more games if they were.
