Utica College 2016/2017

Re: Utica College 2016/2017

*** does that have to do with the game in question?

I suppose I could ask W** his trolling and childish nah-nah-nah remark contributed to this thread, too, ya think..?

Elbo and CRTBurgh, thanks for the IRL. You just can't get that information in a raw box-score, or even at the game itself. Very interesting stuff. Will definitely be referencing that site for that purpose frequently in the future.

Re: Utica College 2016/2017

What else is there to be said that hasn't been said already? Horrendous refs, hence leading to frustration which lead to the almost 100 penalty minutes. Utica had a huge momentum swing in the 2nd and possibly going into the 3rd but blew that with a bad penalty. I feel the game would have ended much differently if Utica could have kept the emotions in check. I've been going to games since 2007 and by far, one of the worst reffed games I have possibly ever seen. Funny / interesting side-note, overheard someone in the AUD after the game wondering how Heenan still has a job lol. This ship is sinking fast, need something to right it quick or they are in some serious trouble.

I agree. UC almost needs to win out to get a berth at this point, if you look at the statistical data.

And I also tend to agree with the fan at the game. Heenan, as brilliant as his "systems" are, has seriously underachieved here. When you consider the huge recruiting advantage he ought to have in terms of fan support and venue, UC ought to be a perennial power such as Oswego and Platty, but he's only gotten his team to The Show once in 16 seasons.

Then, there are the character issues... I -and everyone else, in some small and quiet rinks- have heard him scream rather vile obscenities at his own team ("Effing kitties" comes to mind, and I paraphrase.) And having cozied-up to many parents over the years, I've heard a bunch of horror stories about his Napoleon-complex behaviors and the capricious choices he's made, just so everyone knows who's boss. I haven't shared 95% of them on here, because they go to hearsay, but I have seen with my own eyes how he'll make a healthy scratch of the most responsible and popular player in his own locker room for no explicable reason other than to show that he can.

Heenan's mouth (in the Albany Times Union, if memory serves) got him un-hired as a Union assistant years ago when his stock was still a hot commodity. If any D-1 teams have come knocking since then, I'm not aware of it. But that doesn't mean that he's a charity case here in Utica. His results don't warrant tolerating his antics, and I'm surprised that a liberal college such as UC hasn't given him the boot by now. I'll bet that there are dozens and dozens of young (or old) coaches out there who would love to be in his shoes, and who would win a Hell of a lot more games if they were.

Wow.

Heenan starts Bagetta (?), reins-in the forecheck, and gets what he deserves. UC didn't start playing hockey until the 3rd, down 3-0.

It's getting unwatchable. Seems to me that this once-promising team has checked out on him.

Been there, lived that, myself. When a coach fails to recognize the obvious, and is willing to subjugate wins to his own sense of control, he loses his team... And Heenan is in the process of blowing up yet another season doing just that.

Might be a healthy scratch myself come tomorrow night; just another empty-seat posing as an actual person in a "sellout crowd". If Heenan was a D-1 coach he'd have been shown the door years ago.

After watching the Oswego vs Utica game, then watching the 8-0 Oswego vs Naz game, not sure how The U can get beat like that??? But then again I watched in person as Naz beat Oswego 3-0 in the Norwich Tourny...............Hockey go figure:eek:

Re: Utica College 2016/2017

After sitting near a group of UC players and Gary during the consolation game of the Pathfinder tournament I didn't see much in terms of good character around. The players that stayed off on their own like Kevin Kirisits were very nice to talk to. The others seemed to have that Heenan, I am the greatest thing ever attitude going on. And it's tough to win tight games when guy's like Luc Boby are hanging out in the neutral zone all the time waiting for a breakaway chance and not doing any back checking. After watching most of the championship game with Adam Dekker I think he would be a pretty good choice for the head coaching job. He may need some good assistants to help him out with the recruiting end of things but he is a very personable guy with a good head for the game and as a hero for the Pioneer's when he played he's a UC man if there ever was one.

Re: Utica College 2016/2017

Can we get an impromptu vote? Heenan must go------yes or no.

I vote yes.

Don't get me wrong.....he had (key word:"had") a good run and built a nice program. But his players won't play for him anymore. So. There's no longer a hockey program at UC.

Really interesting to hear some input from other people who don't have an axe to grind. Thanks, guys.

Having said that, Heenan actually admitted to "terrible" recent coaching tonight in the pre-game interview, and that's a start. I give him credit for admitting it publically.

UC got back to balls-out forechecking vs. Potsdam, the exact formula that got them to 8-0 to start the season. This team has to use its strength, which is foot-speed.

Why Heenan started Dill is tonight is a mystery to me, and I'd say the same thing about starting Bagetta last night... Unless Virtanen is injured, neither choice makes any sense.

Yet, Utica looked a lot more like the November team tonight than they have since then. Still leading the W, and having a shot at a favorable seed and the admittedly dubious AQ involved.

I have not given up on this team, even though its chances are fairly slim. They are fun to watch and a very dangerous team, once Heenan turns them loose and lets them play.

PS: As far as the impromptu vote goes, I'd fire him tonight. He has just done too little here, considering what he's had to work with. Been to many D-3 venues where nobody cared enough to show up, and Utica has a legit 2500 asses in the seats for every game. The fans here deserve to suffer less ego, and to witness more wins. The Heenan era has been an enduring frustration.

I didn't think the ECAC West got an AQ to the NCAA tourney yet , do they this year ??

Re: Utica College 2016/2017

I'll believe it when I see it. (I fear for the RIT effect happening between now and then. )

Unless the MAC forms, the UCHC is in good shape to have the autobid in 2018-19.

As of right now the UCHC looks like this in 2018-19:

Neumann
Elmira
Utica
Hobart
Nazareth
Chatham

MAC Teams:
Manhattanville
Lebanon Valley
Wilkes
Kings
Stevenson

So for the UCHC to lose the autobid for 2018-19, they would have to lose five teams. I don't see the MAC teams leaving unless they have one or two others schools for an autobid. Technically they could take Neumann and Chatham as Associate members for their seven.

Re: Utica College 2016/2017

As a totally random comment, my six year old son came across a YouTube video of the Teddy Bear toss goal for 2016. He has become obsessed with watching all of the videos for all the years available and I get to explain to him what a great cause it is. Great event, guys! Can't believe I just found out about it!
