USCHO Outdoors: The Fishing and Hunting Thread

Re: USCHO Outdoors: The Fishing and Hunting Thread

I would really like to get something hunting related for my uncle for x-mas since it is a bond we have. However, he already has pretty much everything you could need. Any ideas?

Maybe instead of a piece of gear that he could use maybe something historic or maybe a book or something about hunting. Not neccessarily like a book with tips but something else. A few examples. I love fishing. I go to antique stores and what not looking for old fly rods and reels or old lures that I can display. I also like to buy old fishing books. I just picked one up the other day that was a "Complete Guide to Fishing in North America" from 1966. It is interesting to read about rivers and streams that are great fishing now but back then were considered polluted. I also recently bought an old Jim Beam bottle that had a trout shaped on the front and painted. I have repoductions of old tin signs (havent been able to find originals) too. Basically all kinds of stuff like that, which I plan on putting on my walls in my man cave / office. I also have fish paintings and a big one of a wood duck (though I dont hunt) hanging in my bedroom. Maybe something along those kinds of lines but related to hunting of course.

Re: USCHO Outdoors: The Fishing and Hunting Thread

Finally decided to get a coyote rifle, after more than a year of wanting one. Found a cheap Savage .22-250 at Cabelas yesterday, which will work just fine for what I need. Also bought a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 scope, with BDC reticle. I downloaded the app to go with the scope, this thing is pretty sweet, I think I'm going to like the BDC. Have to get it sighted in on Saturday, then target shoot a little more to get familiar with the BDC, then hopefully go out coyote hunting saturday night.

edit: I'll be shooting Hornady Superperformance V-Max 50gr.

If you wouldn't mind asking your Dad for his opinions, it would be greatly appreciated.... I'm just trying to sort through the crap-ton of information that's out there right now... An O/U seems to be the right tool based on my needs, but it's also a steeper price of admission, so to speak, so just want to do my homework before investing... Thanks
My dad didn't have much of an opinion on which O/U to buy...sorry

Re: USCHO Outdoors: The Fishing and Hunting Thread

If you don't want to spend the extra money for an over/under, there's nothing wrong with getting a decent pump action shotgun, which should be fairly cheap. Just get an 870, and call it good for now. If in 6 months, you are getting more into the sport, then start looking for an over/under.

Re: USCHO Outdoors: The Fishing and Hunting Thread

Bought a few shadow boxes over the holidays and plan on filling them with flies I tie. I am working on a old school salmon style fly box (though not necessarily using the same ingredients as I do not have them...just the styles). Then want to do something similar for old school style wet flies. Probably do a streamer box too. Then I think I am going to redo the shadow box I already have with deer hair flies. Below is the first 3 flies I tied this afternoon for the salmon style box:

Gorgeous.

Thanks!

Here are the next 5 I did:

I am shooting for 12 for the box so only 4 more to go. I will post a picture of those 4 and the finished box probably late next week. If there are any fly fishers here who would be interested in purchasing some flies Id probably be up for figuring out a way to make that happen. Ive been tying and using only my own flies for several years now. There is something special about knowing that the fish you caught was fooled by something you made yourself

So the wife and I are on our honeymoon in Cabo San Lucas and we went deep sea fishing (the only stipulation I put on our honeymoon was fishing 1 day), and we managed to catch this 92" marlin!

Best part of that picture is repping the Thorne Bros. shirt.

Saw my first fish of the spring jump out of the water today. Still ice on the water, but today looked like the first day of the spring with more open water than ice.

Did you send it to Thorne Brothers yet and will they give you anything for it? ;)

Re: USCHO Outdoors: The Fishing and Hunting Thread

So it looks like I might get my musky fishing season started a little earlier than normal. Work sent me to The middle of Missouri for a job so I'm probably going out with a guide on Pomme de Terre Lake. Trying to convince a college buddy who lives in St Louis to go with me. We'll see if it happens.

Re: USCHO Outdoors: The Fishing and Hunting Thread

My dad and I spent some time out on my parents' lake over Memorial Day. Two undersized pike and a single bluegill, all thrown back. Also lost what was clearly a huge pike; it cleanly bit the line off ahead of the wire leader. It's mostly a pike & bass lake, with some bluegills and perch mixed in.

Trolling was a bust, the fish were only hitting crawler harnesses all weekend.

you ever try trolling crawler harnesses?

Re: USCHO Outdoors: The Fishing and Hunting Thread

Never thought about it, but it'd be something to try.
I know walleye fisherman do it in tournaments on Lake Winnebago/Poygan, just need to get planer boards to get the rig out away from the boat and pay close attention. Typically trolling with electric trolling motor because it needs to be slow.
