USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

Pretty much every big alt band between 1982 and 1988 fits that definition - R.E.M., Replacements, Huskers, Sonic Youth, Fugazi - all fit the pretentious snob mold. You could also call it "hipster rock" and you wouldn't be wrong.
Oh, hell no. The Replacements are just a rock band. So is REM.

Unless The Faces and The Byrds are snob rock too.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

REM's music was anything but simple unless your listening history was limited to perhaps Murmur through Reckoning. Even then though they were doing things no one else was doing and they had strikingly eclectic changes moving from Fables to LRP, more change into Document into Green, Out of Time was nothing like anything they had done before, Automatic was another big change followed by the sharp right with Monster and their last record with Bill Berry (New Adventures) had wide swaths of experimentation.

Instead of possibly being a GOAT for me though they lost a lot of punch once Berry left. I can't remember the last time I listened to Around the Sun, I don't typically pull out Reveal nor Accelerate, Up is actually ok, and they at least slightly redeemed themselves in the end with Collapse Into Now.

I recommend a group called the Pseudo Intellectuals. They have a lot of fun with themselves and they are very much in the Snob Rap category (founding member: Tribe, plus Aesop Rock and some others).

Sonic Youth is definitely a charter Snob Punk band (c.f. X, NoFX). My god they are great, and Thurston is a moron for cheating on Kim. (This is the only celebrity couple breakup that ever bummed me out. Those guys were basically my model of a good marriage, or so I thought.)

Thanks for the recommendation, i’ll check out Pseudo Intellectuals later this week. Fun name!

Yeah, Sonic Youth breaking up and particularly Thurston Moore’s callous attitude toward Kim really bummed me out. Rather Ripped was an insanely good album and their performances on that tour were spot on.

I have nothing after Monster. That hard right turn into generic hard rock lost me. But I haven't listened to it in forever, so maybe I should give it another chance.

New Adventures will be hit or miss for anyone that was fan from the beginning (or became a fan of their earlier works later if they didn't catch on right away). It's definitely worth a few listens to see where it falls for you. After that I think Collapse Into Now is the only one I'd recommend without hesitation. For me they were like a book that started out strong and yet even as it started to get wonky and predictable I still couldn't put it down until the end.

I'll give you Fables as interesting. Good enough that when I found out Stipe was an as-shole it was a disappointment.

I have a New Year's resolution to speak well of what I like and leave the rest as silence, so...

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

I met Michael a few times and never encountered anything but a shy, friendly dude. But I suppose there could be more out there.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

Very long post...sorry -- been on vacation

[/color]488....Husker Du - New Day Rising - This is fantastic. Kept me interested throughout every song. And nearly all of them were catchy. Surprising considering it's so out there. I need more. It seems tragic that they didn't have another album on here. Not sure if the rest of them just sucked or what.
509 ― 485 ―..485....Pearl Jam - Vitalogy - I wanted to like this more. I just didn't think it was their best. I know someone is going to say, "OH THAT WAS THEIR ONLY ALBUM BEFORE THEY SOLD OUT." Roll eyes.
517 ― 537 ―..487....The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
520 ― 511 ―..267....Paul Simon - There Goes Rhymin' Simon
530 ― 517 ―..327....Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill
Must be something in the air about Husker Du. I just started listening to them over vacation on the recommendation of tcbg. We were talking about Bob Mould at trivia and I was aware of him (I think because of the discussions of all the Minnesotans here) and asked were to start. Tcbg is a bit of a music nerd (loves Pixies, Husker Du, etc) and gave me a recommendation. I haven't listened to the above album yet (I started with Zen Arcade), but based on your recommendation, I'll approach that next.

Re: Pearl Jam. I am going to preface this with...I'm a big fan. That said, nothing is perfect and Vitology and No Code are my least favorite albums by them. I think they're not approachable and they're a symptom of the turmoil that is going on with the band. Ten (the first album) has a ton of the radio hits that are associated with the band, but I think that their wide range of styles can appeal to fans of a variety of other bands. Lightning Bolt has a bunch of styles (rock n roll, 50s greaser rock, ukulele songs, love ballad, piano gloomy rock) and is a great album (also it's their most recent). Yield is obviously influenced by the Beatles and the Who (Vedder's favorite band). Binaural is a beautiful album that is way less hard rock and more alternative. Vs. is straight-up angry. Vitology was supposed to weed out the Even Bros (a play on Even Flow -- and derogatory expressions for the frat bros that were at a lot of PJ shows... it failed, there are plenty in attendance still).

I love that particular Smashing Pumpkins album, but it's definitely of an era and hasn't aged as well as I thought.

That is not the Paul Simon album I would have chosen to feature on this list (Graceland is my personal favorite).

Alanis was the first angry rocker chick to get consistent air time nationally (I think). Ani DiFranco, Liz Phair, etc. weren't getting the same national attention and Hole was handicapped by Courtney Love. She also set the stage for the emergence of other angry lady rockers like Fiona Apple, Meredith Brooks, etc. I love this album, though I think she fell off quite a bit after it.
Flip Your Wig is their best album. That's why these lists are always dumb. :)
Good to know - will also check this out
Zen Arcade my friend.
This was really a great listen and I look forward to a relisten.
Pearl Jam: Vitalogy. It was good. IMO, I think Yield was their best album from top to bottom. Ten (bonus points if you got the Euro version with the bonus tracks) is a close second.
Lightning Bolt is probably my favorite, though I also love Vs. Ten is a classic and gets pretty consistent play in our house. I'm not as wild about Yield, but rate it above Vitology and No Code.
I still like some of that hair metal sh*! Ok, Winger can go to hell, along with a lot of the other hair metal blahs, but the ones that really hit it...they can stay. Obv rap.....

Fair point about U2, although that also allowed Bono to become a complete arrogant doosh. ;) I don't mind U2, but they are not the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Why are you bashing Winger? Is it the lack of pants? ;)

They're an arty metal/rock band. You could say they're Rush without the wankery.
Although Corgan did have his own sort of wankery, so yeah, the comparison stands.
I feel like Rush aren't wankers (though there fans definitely are). Corgan though, definitely a wanker.
Naaa, Rush draws some female fans now, so it's more like 7 or 8...:D:D:D
(And I say this as one of those 6 fans!)
:raises hand:

Snob Rock, I love it! Rush, Metallica, Pixies are definitely on that list. Maybe Melvin’s and Radiohead as well but the latter has been a bit boring for about 10 years or more now.
Ugh. I really like Rush, Dream Theater and other snob rock, but f*ing Radiohead fans are the worst.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

Very well done. A woman after my music catalog and a hockey fan to boot? Dayum!

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

I agree on Radiohead. They are the "new" Rush fans. ;)

Liz Phair, Fiona, and the like were victims of radio. They had a radio hit or two, then were expected to be the next Alanis, and it wasn't happening. Even "normal" artists like Jewel ended up being a relative flash in the pan. Kinda sucked. They all had good music.

Thankfully we're in an age now, where you can be heard by people because there are SO many options via the internet.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

My church is doing a Service of Renaming for me, and my pastor let me pick the music... all artists are basically the Soundtrack to My Transition:

"Kaleidoscope Heart"/"Uncharted"- Sara Bareilles
"Patricia"- Florence + The Machine
"Wonderful Unknown"- Ingrid Michaelson
"Glitter In The Air"- P!nk

I just don't have a prelude... I was thinking Norah Jones.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

Just discovered Carpenter Brut. JFC, this guy came to play.

Recommend Turbo Killer, Hairspray Hurricane, Le Perv, Hang 'em All, and Roller Mobster to get you started.

Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

Sara Bareilles: "Amidst The Chaos"

I had never heard her before her appearance on SNL and while her music isn't necessarily my cup of tea (outside of occasionally being in that mood) she has one hell of a voice.

This is almost enough to make me like U2 again.

Watching some of this now. The music still holds up and, "I Will Follow" is still one my favorite all time live songs. Dancing however in the 80's was just so bad. :D
