Re: USCHO Music Thread: Less Talk, More Rock

I was a pretty regular listener of them back in the day although they only made 3 albums and I never found any solo work from her.

My older boy listens to a lot of my music and in addition to asking me which version of True Faith came first (Flunk or New Order), Joy Division and NIN (Atmosphere), he asked the same about the Sundays covering Wild Horses.

One of the few covers that sounds nothing like the original, but is just as good in my opinion.

I'd say the best covers are entirely new takes. Nothing says "cash dive" like re-recording somebody else's hit in exactly the same way they did it. They used to do that all the time in the '40s and '50s but that was when the labels wrote and owned the songs and the singers were just their stable of trained monkeys.

I think I read somewhere that if you cover a song exactly (that is, use the same lyrics), the songwriter can't prevent you from doing so. You just have to pay a certain royalty for the use of the song. However, if you change the lyrics of the song, even in a small way, the songwriter can actually prevent you from doing so. It requires permission.

That is very interesting. I always wondered how Sid Vicious got "My Way." Given Frank's troglodytism he'd have never willingly given it up. (Well... on second thought Frank also really liked money.)

Thanks, *ers. Googled Merchant.

Cristina Vane (Blues/folk) was playing at a Moorhead MN brewery...her vocals were alright, her style was great. Mix of originals and covers. I'd say her best *performance* was her Canned Heat cover of "On The Road Again." She nailed it and them some. She had cds for sale there, so I assume she has a website of some sort.

I will say that 90% of the live music I hear at these places don't stand out at all, they are just that bland. She actually kinda stood out.

Janet Weiss left Sleater-Kinney🙁

What a bummer, however it appears based on previews of the new lp, Janet made the right decision.

S-K sound like they’ve made the same terrible decision Blonde Redhead made before them. Reach for the brass ring not by writing catchier songs in your wheelhouse but leaving the ballpark and trying to write straight up pop. Ugh. It Never works, but we’ll always have this:
