Ooooo, that would eliminate Bon, for sure. And maybe Mick. Yep, said it. Some dude named Keith. ;)

For reference, Robert Smith of the Cure is NOT a great frontman. ;)

Nor Stipe although some might mention both.

Mick's the frontman. Keith is a running gag now, but it's always been Mick.

Mick/Keith is like Larry/Magic. A debate that will never end. Even within the band or media or fans. Stipe? Please.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 4: Songs She Sang to Me, Songs She Brang to Me

Bono (shudder), DL Roth, and Ozzy (depends on your fandom of Rhoades), Axl no (as mentioned, longevity and Slash)

I think you're adding too much baggage to the job description.

And yes, Bono. He's one of the best known musicians in the world. Part of being a great frontman in charisma and popularity and wanting the spotlight. You don't have to like him.

And Rhodes? I love Ozzy with Randy, but Ozzy was a solo artist by that time and almost no one other than music heavies would have any idea who RR is (was).

Re: USCHO Music Thread 4: Songs She Sang to Me, Songs She Brang to Me

There's no debate.

Mick is the face of the Stones.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 4: Songs She Sang to Me, Songs She Brang to Me

Keith is the wrinkled taint.

I give Bono credit, and yes I shudder. But I have to give him what he deserves.

The Mick/Keith thing, using your parameters (has to outshine his mates) changed my opinion somewhat. ;)

Doesn't have to, but it's one possible factor.

There's no question that DLR was a frontman, but he didn't completely outshine Eddie.

The great/legendary guitarists have their own category and separate recognition.

DLR was a frontman, for sure. You can't outshine Eddie in that band.

And I would agree, the guitarists have their own level of idol-ism.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 4: Songs She Sang to Me, Songs She Brang to Me

Freddie. His performance at Live Aid was GOAT.

Personally I'd put Dave Grohl ahead of Mick and I love the Stones.

Plant is hard to beat.

I love Gilmour and Waters but neither are that dynamic.

Everyone seems to be forgetting Jim Morrison although for some reason a lot of people pooh-pooh The Doors in general and I smh.

Dickinson, Vedder, DLR, Ronnie JD, Kiedis, Michael Hutchence...

Re: USCHO Music Thread 4: Songs She Sang to Me, Songs She Brang to Me

Shame on me for forgetting about Hutchence.

The INXS shows I saw were awesome and he was most of the reason.

Kirk was probably the other 15%.

Not every band has a "frontman" and I agree that neither Waters nor Gilmour were.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 4: Songs She Sang to Me, Songs She Brang to Me

And yeah... Jim.

The problem for me is Ray.

Went through the obligatory Doors faze in college and I still appreciate Jim, but I cannot listen to the Doors anymore other than the occasional Moonlight Drive when it comes up on the playlist.

Jim was (obviously) a legendary frontman.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 4: Songs She Sang to Me, Songs She Brang to Me

In these discussions of guitarists and front men I always think these guys deserve at least a mention but they seldom get one. The Rodney's of Rock.

"Ladies and Gentleman, Boys and Girls... Please welcome to the stage the greatest ****ing Rock Band you've ever seen."

(If nothing else, check out the last minute of that clip. Bun E finishes strong.)

For a straight up live Rock show Tom, Rick, Robin, and Bun, are pretty cool.

Maybe "The Flame" ruined their rep.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 4: Songs She Sang to Me, Songs She Brang to Me

Cannot stand The Doors.

I too, in college, bought a couple Doors albums, cause you know, they're THE DOORS!!!. Also because the opening to Apocalypse Now warped my fragile little mind.

Played 'em once, maybe twice. Meh. Still cannot stand to hear when they come on the radio. And the topper is, I have a friend who, upon moving into an old house or apartment, found a copy of one of Jim's old books of poetry, as well as an old Polaroid someone had taken of him at a club show I assume in Boston, stashed away in a closet. The poetry was horrid. I mean terrible, the scribblings of a 16 year old high school sophomore who thinks he's onto something profound and world changing. I say again, horrid.

"You can not petition the lord................................with praaaayer!!"

I'll never understand the polarizing hatred of The Doors. I like them fine.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 4: Songs She Sang to Me, Songs She Brang to Me

I'm surprised Kep didn't mention Jello Biafra

meh... I've done some writing and just like Hemingway, 1st drafts and stuff in my notebooks are pretty much all crap, too. Good writing is mostly the result of hard work.

Lyrics to LA Woman are pretty good writing. Also I remember first discovering that Mr. Mojo risin' was an anagram of Jim Morrison. I was like

I've listened to half of those guys, younger brother of a friend of mine was a punk rocker so that's how I got exposed to them. DKs, Circle Jerks, Angry Samoans , Rollins, Meatmen, bad brains.
One down 3 to go
