Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

Ugh... for some reason, that long post put the keyboard solo from Jump in my head on a loop. :D

Need to find something else to listen to - and fast!

After Ozzy, I did Scorpions World Wide Live - nowhere near as good but now the itch is sufficiently scratched.

Let's see...

Zeppelin BBC Sessions disc 2

Oh yeah and you lovers of alternative - check out Sticky Fingers.

Caress Your Soul
Land of Pleasure
Westways...

All 3 are outstanding albums by a great young band.

Which I turned my kid onto btw.

My point is different. If we know about it, no matter how we came by our knowledge, it isn't interesting.

The music that will in retrospect define an era starts as youth rebellion. If it's the kind of thing that leaks out to us, it's not going to be what mattered.

3 years after its peak, music critics will find out about it as it's in its death throes. 5 years after the peak, music aficionados will find out about it as the bands that were influenced by it are starting to gel. 10 years after the peak, one of the songs by one of the groups will become a hipster trivia answer.

Valid.

Ozzy - Diary of a Madman bonus disc

Concert from Bizzard of Oz Tour.

Don't listen to Ozzy more than a couple times a year, and it's almost always something live with Randy. Hard to explain why it brings me so much joy but I've had a big stupid grin on at my desk for the last 30 minutes.

So good...

I find Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde are more my taste. Bark At The Moon. The Ultimate Sin. No Rest For The Wicked.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

There is all kinds of great music being played today if you know where to search. My sources include iHeart radio (much better than Pandora for variety), last.fm, The Current 89.3, pick an artist you like/find a video on YouTube/look on the right for stuff that pops up/explore, Hennepin County Library (and I assume others in major metro areas), I read reviews from RS and Spin and then fine the music online to check out to see if it's worthy, etc, etc.

Bless my sons because they listen to some very cool music compared with their peers and have actually started to influence some of them to expand their own listening into alt rock both new and old. They were telling the other day about Portugal the Man, Bloc Party, Band of Horses, Sponge, Polica, Black Keys, OneRepublic, Oasis, etc, etc all of which came from my thumb drive plugged into the car.

I will never grow tired of trying to find something new. That and just listening to music every day is a huge part of what keeps me alive.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

I'm glad I have friends who are musicians, because they're constantly telling me about new artists. That's how I found out about The National, Interpol, Over The Rhine, Florence + The Machine, The Used, Fleet Foxes, My Morning Jacket, etc.

Also, I don't want to listen to sad songs all the time. I'm looking for music that can be cheerful, without being sickeningly sweet. Any suggestions?

Happy music? Always look to ska and reggae.

Bob rarely is the music I listen to depressing, although that's not s 100% gaurantee. Check out links if stuff I've posted here they you've not yet discovered.

Although I recommend The Samples right off the bat as a band I think you'd enjoy based upon the artists you've noted being a fan of and it's pretty upbeat stuff. My Mirning Jacket, Maroon 5 (not my style but...), Bruno, Portugal the Man...

Did find some cheerful music in my collection. I found Cloud Cult, Over the Rhine, Florence, Oasis, Amy Winehouse, later Counting Crows, the Weakerthans, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, R.E.M, Dropkick Murphys...

"Happy Hippopotamus" is a go-to for when I need my sports lifted. Really hard to be sad when listening to Cloud Cult.
