I need a new stereo. I'm not an audiophile, by any stretch of the imagination. My current stereo is about 12 years old, so it has no connectivity to i-anything or wireless or USB anything. I have a separate ipod docking station-speaker thing that is a piece of ****. I'd like something with an AM/FM tuner, CD player, ipod connectivity (whether it's a reliable USB port or a dock). I'm not really sure about Bluetooth/wifi and if I would use it. I do have wifi and a router upstairs, but I don't really do any music streaming or use my phone for music - the music I listen to is on my ipod (and hence, on my computer and the cloud). Spending less than $300 is a must.

I'm thinking about these 2:

In general, I would say that Yamaha stereos put out better sound than Sony's stuff.

What version iPod do you have? Is it even Bluetooth capable? If it doesn't have Bluetooth, then you should stay away from the Sony entirely as it doesn't mention any other method of connecting to it except for an auxiliary jack - think headphone jacks. As for the Yamaha, again depending upon how old your iPod is, you might need an adapter to use their provided dock. Do you have the wide connection for your iPod or the connector that's about a quarter-inch wide? If it's a quarter-inch wide, then you probably have an iPod that's Bluetooth enabled. Though I would still lean towards a dock if you'd like to preserve battery life.

I have a Nano and a Classic. My entire music library is on the Classic (not the Nano), and it's going to die someday. Which way would be more efficient to have access to my entire library after my Classic dies?

I have to assume your entire music collection is also on your PC. If that's the case, and your computer has Bluetooth, then you might be able to connect it to the new stereo and basically play your music using that connection. If you don't have Bluetooth, then you could get a Bluetooth adapter to do the same. I don't know anything about those systems other than what Amazon states, so you'll have to check to see if they're limited in the types of devices that can connect using Bluetooth.

I'm no help as I get my receivers at garage sales. Have 4 - garage, den, great room, boy's room - that I've gotten that way. Usually for around $20 and varying in quality although all at least good.

The one in the basement was bought at a store about 15-20 years ago.

I have input cords hooked up to each so I can hook up an iPod or phone to any of them easily.

One thing I just bought for the kitchen is a sound bar. I was trying to figure out where I could fit a receiver in a cabinet out of sight, but none of the cabinets were deep enough.

Got a sound bar on black friday that sits on top of the cabinets and plugs in where the above stove microwave plugs in (out of sight). Works great and isn't an eyesore.

Just picked up the remastered Under a Blood Red Sky, with the dvd of the full Red Rocks show. Except minus I fall Down due to camera technical difficulties, and Bono's improved America/Send in the Clowns during Electric Co. for copyright reasons. I would have thought by now they would have paid for the rights to use them, just to keep the show as complete as possible.

Ahhh, the U2 I like.

As of now in the path for Monday night. Fortunately, where I live and work is fairly high above sea level and from what I've learned from neighbors fairly flood proof. Of course that says nothing about the wind...

Family flies out tonight to Bangkok for a month - thank Parise it would appear they'll get out alive just ahead of the onslaught. Funny because when they left Mpls for here (Nov 10th) the s**t was hitting the fan that day too.

Ended up going with the Yamaha, for quality. Found out I can get Bluetooth adapters both for the stereo and computer, if it comes to that (or just get a pair of wireless speakers). Thanks for the tips!

Obviously not from New England. They were worshipped pretty heavily around the Boston area. Don't think they're really unknown unless you're just too young to have been around when they were. Hell, they had their videos played on MTV.

You are correct on my origins. Born/bred/raised MN. Many friends ran with the alt-crowd growing up, so heard of many bands that were out of the mainstream/fringe bands.
