Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Christmas records by Elvis, Nat King Cole, Bing, Johnny Mathis and Sinatra. I know there's less traditional stuff out there that's quite enjoyable (much of which I personally own), but this hits the spot right now.

I had never heard Portishead before... they remind me of Massive Attack. I like it.

Have Boston - Boston on all day so far.

3rd time through. I don't know why. :) I mean, I chose it the first time but that doesn't explain letting it repeat.

The soloing on Hitch a Ride is floating my boat today.

Was every song on this album a hit?

Pretty close, I think. IIRC, it was the best selling debut of all time until GNR came along.

It's long been derided as "corporate rock", and to be fair, that's pretty much what Tom Scholz and his MIT-educated amplifier/effects geekery became by the second album, but more-so due to the multitude of copyists that ripped off the "Boston sound" to one degree or another in the 15 years that followed that album's release. You can hear a lot of Scholz's guitar playing style in the solos of the 80s, especially the sappy and mid-tempo stuff.

I used to listen to that album regularly in college, as it was the first full album I really listened to from start to finish. I revisit it a couple of times a year now.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

I've been listening to a lot of Franz Schubert lately. Is this still the correct thread to post such things?

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Officially at binge stage with Zep.

Now doing the BBC Sessions.

Weird as the crowd is clearly seated and in a studio with only polite applause between songs. Must have been weird to perform this kind of music in that atmosphere. I mean, they're ****ing bringing it.

EDIT: 4th version of Going to Cali that I've heard today as I forgot that I listened to a rip of the live dvd(s) on the way in today. Fortunately, I don't get sick of this song and each version has had noticeable differences/nuances. Beautiful song.

The Gentle Guest: This band has pretty much broken up, and that's a shame as I just learned of them by way of a friend giving me a copy of their disc Cast Off Your Human Form for Xmas. The song Judgment is my favorite so far, but most of the album is pretty decent. They were out of Eau Claire, WI, and only only played a small handful of shows in 2013, from what I could find on their Facebook page.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Some sunny sounds are rolling out of my office today.

Finally used the iTunes gift cards I received for Xmas to grab a few things that I've been meaning to.

Alific - Echoes From the Soul
Close Enough - Noize
Dub Architect - Dub Volume 2
The Movement - Side by Side
The Movement - One More Night

Loving all of them!

EDIT:

The Movement - One More Night

Not a good album at all upon further review. Cheesy cheesy soft reggae-ish mush. Want my money back. Too bad as I really like the band that did the album Set Sail.

Carly Simon does "Just Like a Woman" for the Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan disc. She turned the song into a lounge act song. And a bad one at that.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Just grabbed...

Stick Figure - The Reprise Sessions

This is his first album that he's recorded with his touring band in the studio. It's a different sound to be sure. Much less ambient.

I like it. Not better or worse than the ones he did by himself - just different... and very good.
