Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Back to the 'Mats show.

Halfway through... ****, but this is an awful lot of fun. :)

One thing though. They're playing Merry Go Round. How should I take that? Is it an F U to me? Is it embracing what they hated that they became? Is it an F U to themselves? Why would they intentionally play this? I'm confused.

Tight version, btw. :p:D

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Something struck me as funny and pretty cool in a way.

One of my kid's favorite t-shirts is his Nirvana one. He's a freshman and it occurred to me that his wearing this is akin to many of us wearing Zeppelin (or whatever) back in the day. My one time contemporary music is now his "classic" (and cool) music.

When did I get old?

Really glad he appreciates good music, even if I don't love all of his new screamo/heavy alternative stuff, at least it's listenable (and not rap/hip-hop).

Oh yeah, and he actually really likes Nirvana, so no poser. At this point, he probably knows their catalogue better than I remember it. :)

I disagree, it's more like us wearing Beatles shirts. Assuming you're 35 or older, Zeppelin was still around when you were living. Cobain died early 94. I bet your kid who's still in high school wasn't alive then - even by Wisconsin standards he'd have to be one dumb cookie to still be there now. Or he's getting chlamydia from the guidance counselor. ;)

I agree that it's not the the same amount of years (I agree that the Beatles would have been a better example), it's just that he's wearing my band's t-shirts and actually likes the music. My music has become classic. And it's still cool.

Hell, I'M cool!

Obviously.

My generation is probably the first parents who have such a similar growing up experience as their kids'. In terms of music, it really hasn't changed that much since the 80s. Even the boomers couldn't really say that as late 60s and early to mid 70s music no longer exists in contemporary bands.

As far as Zeppelin goes, I was 10 when Bonzo died and was still 4 or 5 years away from actually becoming a fan. Sure, I knew of them and heard them on the radio, but I wasn't into them until after they were no longer a band. Was far too busy with Rush, Yes, REO, Men at Work, Duran Duran, The Fixx, Billy Idol, Kiss...

Wait a minute, maybe I'm not as cool as I thought. :o

Nah, I am. :D

Final thoughts on the 'Mats show...

Wonderful. Had a **** eating grin on my face all afternoon listening to it.

Gonna have to grab the other Riot performances and see them if/when they tour.

listened to an interview with Tommy the other day, from I don't know how long ago, and the guy was asking him, did it bother him that their songs never really became hits, and what songs of theirs did Tommy think should have been huge. One of those Tommy mentioned was Merry Go Round.

And I found this review linked to in the previous review article wonderful. Long, but effin' wonderful.

Holy cow, nice read!

"A very long time ago, before you were born, there was a city, or two cities, really, in a very cold, very remote place, a place you've never been before and are unlikely to go."

To continue the theme, now hearing...

The Replacements - 7/27/87 from the Ritz in New York

Really beautiful soundboard.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Changing it up a bit today...

REO Speedwagon - 7/15/81 Boston Garden

From the days that these guys were one of my favs. Hi Infidelity Tour (I assume). Right on the edge of the rockin' 70's band that I really liked and the Top 40 pandering band that they'd become and I would despise.

They're tearing it up during this show and Richrath is reminding me why I used to like his playing so much.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

I've got no use for REO Speedwagon, but I do love Roll With The Changes. The way Richrath jumps in just as the organ solo is ending to take things over the top.

Was that Cronin on the organ, or did they have another player in the band? Can't picture him ever having rock and roll balls enough to ever play something like that.

It's definitely a nostalgia listen for me the couple times a year that I put them on. I liked them as a preteen in the early 80s. Liked Journey at that time too. Oh well.

Speaking of a nostalgia listen, now hearing...

Kiss - Love Gun, Rock and Roll Over & Destroyer on shuffle

Absolutely my favorite band from about 76 through 79.

:D

Listening to Lithium on XM now, which reminds me how badly I need to get my Smashing Pumpkins CDs out again. Takes me back to a really great time and place in my life.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Bought and downloaded the new Justin Moore album. Excellent. He's on the verge of making it big, really big.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Armed Forces.
Junip - Junip
Sigur Ros - Kveikur

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Pearl Jam - Riot Act. If you like PJ (and I know not everyone does, even alternative fans) but this is such an underrated PJ album - perhaps their best unheralded since Yield.

Which is my favorite, as a whole. Love that album.

Stabbing Westward: Darkest Days

About 10 years ago, someone left this CD in my dad's taxi, and my dad brought it home and gave it to me. Instantly liked it then, and after listening to it again, I still like it.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Yes - playlist of 70s stuff with a few 90125 tracks mixed in (nothing more recent than that).

Why?

They were a favorite at one time and I still listen to them every once in a while. I listen to about 8-10 hours of music a day due to being in an office or a vehicle, so I have unlimited time to satisfy every indulgence.

Steve Howe and Chris Squire remain favorites of mine at their respective instruments.
