Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

I still have a slew of unplugged on cassette recorded live back in the day (can't remember if it was KQ or not that would air these over the radio) including Nirvana and R.E.M., but they are buried in a box somewhere in my basement.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

I got away from Bowie for a several years (not sure why but have gone through the same with R.E.M. for instance) but lately I've been listening to Lodger, Station to Station, A Reality Tour and The Rise and Fall...

Glad we found each other again.

If yopu haven't heard the bonus live disc from the Bowie at the Beeb collection, you should track it down if you can. A beautiful show from late period Bowie. There's lots of clips on youtube, I guess it was broadcast on the BBC, but as far as I know, no commercial DVD release. Sad.

Never really cared much for this song when the movie came out, but this is an absolute stellar version.

Just did the foam mod for my HD558's. Awwwwwwww yeah.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Found a Wu Tang show from 2007 on Netflix. Awesome. Of course, they closed out with "Gravel Pit" which is a very marketable song (I have heard it at numerous clubs and such, back in the day):

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Does anyone recall the last time an artist or group released a full album where you're not just getting a collection of songs, but rather a complete piece of work where songs tie-in to one another, if not direct tie-ins from start to finish at least with nods to one another?

The reason I ask is that a song just came up on my mp3 list where the group has a rough theme to the album for each song, and at the end of each track is a story of a daughter with her father on various occasions to really bring it together.

Also, did board turn off embedded video or is it my browser? I'm stuck on IE 8 in the office, so I'm not 100% sure.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Board is no fun.

you got that right. first they took the fun out of things by shutting down guys like Chris!!! and even that db Jdubbs (who it was fun to beat down on now and again), now this? C'MON!

I don't think Dubbie was banned. He'll be back when we least want him to be.

Thankfully, he only has a woody for Gopher hockey or he'd be in here (the cafe) too.

haha! yeah, hopefully he doesn't enter the cafe...though I suspect if he did he'd be flaming out on the NHL thread or something

on another note, here's an excellent write-up on The Replacements Chicago show - http://www.grantland.com/blog/hollywood-prospectus/post/_/id/87284/the-replacements-rapturous-return-two-very-different-takes-from-one-critic

Wasn't American Idiot (Green Day) like that? I thought it was, or some newer album by them. I also think the Flaming Lips came out with some concept 4-cd set or something, where you could either listen to each CD on their own, or if you had the capabilities, you could play all four at once, and it would create some super-cd with all the songs meshing together....

The Dear Hunter with their first 3 albums: Act 1, Act 2, and Act 3. I'm pretty sure they're on Spotify, or were the last time I checked. They're a post-hardcore prog-rock band that's pretty amazing.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Just downloaded the 'Mats show and hope to give it a listen later today.

Can't hardly wait... ;)

:D

Finally getting to this. I have to say that it's a little weird all these years later. I used to have a copy of their last show at Grant Park. Never thought I'd be listening to a new show.

They sound good. They seem to be enjoying themselves.

I just wonder how this "looks" with a much older group than my mind's eye remembers playing this music. How does irreverence age? Is it simply nostalgia or can it still be real?

If they tour, I'll just have to see for myself.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Something struck me as funny and pretty cool in a way.

One of my kid's favorite t-shirts is his Nirvana one. He's a freshman and it occurred to me that his wearing this is akin to many of us wearing Zeppelin (or whatever) back in the day. My one time contemporary music is now his "classic" (and cool) music.

When did I get old?

Really glad he appreciates good music, even if I don't love all of his new screamo/heavy alternative stuff, at least it's listenable (and not rap/hip-hop).

Oh yeah, and he actually really likes Nirvana, so no poser. At this point, he probably knows their catalogue better than I remember it. :)
