Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Pink Floyd - Is There Anybody Out There. Not a huge fan of "greatest" this or that, but this is a very good synopsis of their history.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

I heard "Mandinka" by (pre-controversy and famousness) Sinead O'Connor on the radio this morning. Holy flashback.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

From Nirvana and Soundgarden reject to American hero.

What an amazing story.

Jason Everman has the unique distinction of being the guy who was kicked out of Nirvana and Soundgarden, two rock bands that would sell roughly 100 million records combined. At 26, he wasn’t just Pete Best, the guy the Beatles left behind. He was Pete Best twice.

Then again, he wasn’t remotely. What Everman did afterward put him far outside the category of rock’n’roll footnote. He became an elite member of the U.S. Army Special Forces, one of those bearded guys riding around on horseback in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

That's a cool story, always wondered where some of those 'almost famous' guys went.

Everman wouldn't have been in SG if Hiro Yamamoto hadn't left right before the Louder Than Love tour. They needed a bass player in a hurry, and then unloaded Everman due to personality conflict as soon as the tour was over in the fall of 1990.

Band of Horses - all of it on shuffle

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Been listening to King George this morning...not much better than that.

Also caught Kip Moore's album, which is deeper than the singles that have been released, really quite good.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

A while back I asked for some input on R.E.M. and The Replacements, two bands who I never really gave much of chance back in the 80's-90's

so saturday I had time to listen to Hootenany, Pleased To Meet Me, Tim and Murmur

uhm. first off, Hootenany, what a weird record. I think this is why I didn't get into The Replacements back in the day...I didn't GET IT. however, I then listened to Tim and Pleased To Meet Me front to back for the first time and omfg @$%@$^^!!!!! great records all the way through, and the song Alex Chilton blew the door open for me. I hadn't heard it before and I've now listened to that song about 27,000x since saturday! holy ****. I can't wait to delve into the rest of the catalog.

R.E.M's Murmur is pretty astounding as well. Great song after great song after great song.

what I really noticed about both bands is the bass player's, I had no idea Mike Mills and Tommy Stinson were as great a players as they are.

so there you have it. holes in my record collection filling up nicely!

Just by happenstance I got into both of those bands in their heyday I've got a pretty robust REM and Replacements catalog - we offset each other.

One thing I've taken to lately is reading the wiki pages on bands...which link to so many other bands and influences. I learn a fair amount that I didn't know about the band itself and other projects etc. I like seeing the differnt lineups, who they used to play with etc. A lot of it is stuff that used to be in liner notes or in some mag. Nowadays I am much less likely to know where a band is from etc. I may know the music but unlike the 'old days" when a DJ might provide more info on a new band, I have to hunt down info if I want it.

This.

Leads me to side projects and new bands (to me) that were their influences.

Another great source for me has been iTunes. I click on an album of something that I already have and it shows (what they consider to be) related or similar artists. It's certainly hit or miss, but I've found a ton of new music in this fashion.

The aforementioned Band of Horses came from clicking on a Shins album and there are probably a hundred more from Wiki and/or iTunes. Slightly Stoopid from Sublime, Stick Figure from Slightly Stoopid, the Chameleons from Interpol, etc...

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

John Farnham. A little "Thunder in your Heart". I will be shocked if anyone's ever even heard of this without looking it up. It's from a movie soundtrack.

I do that with movies quite a bit. For example, in "Public Enemies" there was an old movie playing in one scene (forget the name of it, I believe it's mentioned in the trivia section at IMDB). So I got it from Netflix.

Oh man does this blow chunks. Which is a shame, since "Turn Up the Radio" is such an instant classic anthem.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

A few of my very favorite, very under-rated bands.

Noel Gallagher says this is his favorite band. And Paul Weller has been their patron for years.

I miss James Gray.

Links not working on iPad. since I'm a big Weller fan, well his music not his personality, can you note the band's name and I can go from there?

Thanks

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

T-Minus 10 Days (second vid meanders a bit/ebbs and flows, but worth the watch)

One of my favorite Cure songs that comes from an otherwise somewhat forgettable album:

Radiohead: In Rainbows
Alexi Murdoch: Time Without Consequence
She Wants Revenge: This is Forever
Florence + the Machine: Ceremonials

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Driving to Chicago on Sunday, I heard Rod Stewart - Gasoline Alley, Every Picture, the Rod Stewart Album & Never a Dull Moment.

Was perfect road music for that day.

Today, I'm hearing a radio broadcast of his 12/24/76 concert in London. I was 7 at the time and probably about ready to explode at the time/date that this concert happened.

I enjoy thinking about where I might have been or what I may have been doing when I listen to these concerts from the 70s. The thought that a concert was happening by an artist that I'd someday like and I was oblivious to other than hearing them on the radio...

EDIT: OMFG - a Toyota commercial was included in the torrent and it was a KC & the Sunshine Band/Sly & the Family type version of the "You asked for it, you got it Toyota" theme song. It seriously got DOWN! There was SO ****ing much awesome in that commercial! :D

Love it when those little nugs are included.
