Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

I have a real hard time picturing the guys from YES doing anything athletic, let alone basketball. Do they even play basketball in England?

I have the same struggle picturing Neil Young doing anything athletic - even hockey.

Your story sure paints an amusing picture though. :)

It might have been enhanced basketball.

My mom raised me on Neil Diamond, Elton John, and the local oldies music channel. I still have all her Neil Diamond CDs and cassette tapes, and I play the first Hot August Night frequently. Doesn't get any better than when he sings "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show."

Mixing it up with Beastie Boys, Aesop Rock, The Roots, Outkast, Atmosphere and Mac Miller.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

While looking for something else, I stumbled upon this article and have to say that I couldn't agree more...

http://theweek.com/article/index/267901/in-defense-of-pop-u2s-most-hated-album

"But the album was a total commercial and critical failure in the United States. Which is a shame, because Pop is one of the best rock albums of the 1990s and perhaps the best of U2's career."

I hated... LOATHED this album when it came out. The album and the tour turned me away from what previously had been my all-time favorite band.

In listening to it now and in listening to the shows from the tour, I realize that I just wasn't ready for that kind of music and I misinterpreted where the songs were coming from - what the motive was. I also misinterpreted just how good the songs are - mostly coz I dismissed them before really exploring them.

It's funny coz Pop now sounds contemporary compared to a lot of their other work. Just shows how far ahead of it's time the album really was.

I place it third all-time for U2 only behind Achtung Baby and the J-Tree. That's a hell of a difference from where I would have placed it a few years ago.

Listening to a playlist of "new sound" U2 (songs from Achtung on). While I appreciate (and grew up on) the "old sound" U2, I find that I most often prefer the newer stuff when I listen to this band.

Stick Figure and Pacific Dub came a bit ago and Dirty Heads are coming and also Pepper with The Movement. All Cali type bands.
Picked up Burial Ground based on your rec. Initial impression was "not bad". Will probably pick up a few more of his albums. I listened to it right after listening to Marcus Garvey by Burning Spear so I'm sure the comparison factor got in the way.

Maybe it won't be your bag, who knows? It's definitely a more subdued take on reggae/dub. My boy calls it dubbie-reggae and I think that fits.

I will say that while I liked him right away, it took some time for me to really love his music and elevate him to a favorite in that genre. Had to percolate for some months. Now he fills an area akin to an itch that I can't scratch with anything else.

I'd suggest Smokestack next. The Reprise Sessions is him along with his newly formed (at the time) touring band. I like it too and is a little closer to a normal take on reggae.

Sound of my Addiction is his weakest (imo) and was his first.

PS - Oh yeah, and don't let "Women of the Night" on Burial Ground throw you. It's godawful and I had to delete it. -shudder-

Or more appropriately termed "Blue-Eyed Reggae"

The phrase comes from an announcer @ Sunsplash and is on the album Alive in Jamaica by Blue Riddim Band. Highly recommend it if you enjoy the Coxsone style. Band out of Kansas City who were the only white boys ever to rock Sunsplash. Saw them a few times while I was stranded in Missouri and they're the ones who got me into reggae. If you ever find any of their concerts on your torrent searches, I'd love to know about it.

In a search of the 4 that I frequent, there were no hits.

I will be checking them out though...

A drive by post to make sure y'all are watching Sonic Highways on HBO. Even if you aren't a Foo Fighters fan it is an amazing hour of music history each week. Go find it OnDemand. You won't be sorry.

The first video. My favorite track of 2014.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Funny, cause I can't listen to any U2 beyond Achtung Baby. In fact, their more recent stuff has so turned me off to U2 entirely, that i can't even listen to their older stuff anymore. And I was as big a U2 fanboy as there could ever have been for their first five albums.

I'll take something like this any day over their later period stuff. It's structurally simple, maybe even amateurish, but it's got a passion, a freshness, a joy, that i find missing from their newer stuff.
