USCHO Music: From Queen to The Beatles to Lady Gaga

Ya know, Billy Joel has said in the past that he didn't intend for it to be interpreted that way, but I still think that's a solid take.

No. That is retconning a 1970s song for a 2020s mindset. Indeed it contradicts the meaning and impact of the lyric.

These are sad sacks drowning their sorrows. BJ sucks* but his lyrics do have meaning.

* And TBF that is one of the last legitimately good songs he wrote and further testament to how tawdry a waste of genuine talent his career has been.

Meh. Lyrics are poetry and are thus open to anyone's interpretation.

No. Words have meaning and authors have intention.

Not all art is abstract. The listener or viewer or reader's opinion of concrete art has zero relevance to its meaning. The idea that the consumer of art is an original creator of meaning is fan service mixed with participation trophy. When I listen to Beethoven I'm a doofus listening to a genius, full stop. What I think or like means zero outside of me. My interpretation is a wet fart in the wind.
