USCHO Dead Pool

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

Wow, alot of interest.

Instead of actually doing a draft, with this many people we would probably be better off all putting together a list of 20 famous (internationally, nationally, locally) people. I was thinking a very simple kind of scoring, 3pts if the person is <40, 2 pts for 41-65, 1 point for >65, and one bonus point if person is only on your list. If anyone has objections, post them. The picks must be famous people, so no neighbors or anything like that. Even local people like if you live in Fargo and you pick the local Fargo sportscaster, that would count. Maybe we should just say off the bat that Zsa Zsa is out, because at this point you'd be dumb to not have her on your list, if she even makes it until we make the picks.

What about for the scoring you assign points based on the number of years below 100 the person who died is? For example, Person X died at 40 and is worth 60 points, but Person Y was 95 and is only worth 5 points. A lot like they're trying to do with hockey, the more scoring the better.

My .02.

And I'd be cool with a list too.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

The list would work better I think. Plus, I like the scoring for age. Also, you should do the points for the amount of lists said person appears on.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

It sounds like the list has more support. I'll figure out scoring, taking everyone's suggestions into account.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

Is there also going to be a degree of difficulty scale? If say Ozzy Osbourne dies, that may be a layup? If Miley Cyrus dies, that's a huge surprise. Just asking.

Rock stars should get x2 for every year after 15. Pro wrestlers should get x5. There are easy years and hard years.

I think that would be tough to pull off, since we'd have to know everyone that was going to be drafted in order to assign rankings, I think the age thing is supposed to help with this some. Since if we do the 100-age to determine score, Miley would be worth a bunch of points.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

That and I don't think Zsa Zsa should be banned from lists, either. Everyone knows she's virtually done. If everyone has her on their lists in the first place, it's a wash anyway. Free points where everyone else gets those same place doesn't give you any advantage.

The subtraction-from-age part of the scoring is your degree of difficulty. If you set it at age 100, you're essentially covering everyone in the world except those fishing for Guiness Book fame, but if you set it at age 90, you're putting more of a challenge into it for the people playing (and coincidentally, you'd be eliminating Zsa Zsa in the process). And if you want to award points for being the only person to pick someone that passes, so be it.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

I really like the idea of a low ceiling (90, or even 80). That way you're not just playing the odds on the ancient, you're genuinely evaluating the likelihood of people paying for their lifestyle (Sid) or what we used to call "poor object choice" (Nancy).

It's also more fun to root for the demise of Paris Hilton than Joan Fontaine.

It's never wrong to root for the death of Paris Hilton. :D

That's what the scoring scheme was when I picked a 2-year-old.

The higher points for younger deaths is supposed to encourage creativity in picks by awarding more points - it's just common sense to pick older people in death pools.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

I actually found a good rules site when I was surfing. Here it is.

Dead Pool Rules
I like those rules, they seem to mirror what we've been talking about here. I especially like the pregnancy rule...
I say we just go with this other guy's rules, with an addition of a 50 point bonus if you are the only one to pick the person.

As far as submitting lists, I propose that I send my list to someone that isn't participating, but is on the boards, like Brent, for example. After I do that, you can send me all of your lists, that way my picks won't be affected by seeing all of your lists. After the deadline for submitting picks is up, I'll post the lists, probably in a google spreadsheet, if I can figure those things out.

I also think if we're doing lists, lets do more than 20 people, I don't want 50, like the rules posted suggests, but I was thinking more like 35.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

I like them except for the local politician and local tv personalities. No one from new york will have heard of sven sungard or that stupid witch phyllis kahn.

That's the beauty of it.
If you think Paul Douglas is going to die in a horrible weather balloon incident, you should be able to pick him because Minnesotans all know who he is and everyone else can suck it. :)

I was thinking 15-20. Otherwise we're sure to have a lot of duplication.
