USCHO Dead Pool

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

I like them except for the local politician and local tv personalities. No one from new york will have heard of sven sungard or that stupid witch phyllis kahn.
I don't think that is a problem, as long as you can prove that they're somewhat famous. It isn't like someone is going to pick only local people, and most will have a blend of local and more widely known people.

I do like the idea of pick Sven Sundgard though....I was going to pick Senile Sid, but he'd only be worth about 4 points.

Senile Sid would be a terrible pick. God is spiting us all by making him live to 150 and writing until he's 160.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

I was thinking 15-20. Otherwise we're sure to have a lot of duplication.
Maybe we'd have to have more incentive for having clever and original picks? I don't like the idea of only having 15 picks, because we might end up without much action, because we won't get as many people picked. There are probably 5-7 people that will be on 5+ lists whether we pick 15 or 30, if we pick 30 it might encourage people to go out on the limb and pick more Miley Cyrus's and Justin Bieber's.

Fail. I know Sven Sundgaard.

One other rule I think would even the playing field - no death row inmates, or rather, no points for death row inmates that are executed. Quite frequently, their dates of execution are publicized well in advance, that's kind of cheating when you know exactly when someone is going to die.

If they die without being executed... well, then that's no different than any other death pool pick.

I'm also cool with a list of 30, but Justin Bieber is a sucker's bet. The world would never get that lucky.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

I know it's hard to quibble about morality in a dead pool, but personally I am opposed to the pregnancy rule. Call it a strong Karmic hunch.

With a spreadsheet with automated rules, the bookkeeping is probably just as easy (or hard) with 50 as with 20, so I'd vote for the longest list possible. This will also increase the likelihood of somebody winning with an inspired pick (Justin Bieber) than accumulating fogies.

In the vein of the death row rule, people diagnosed with short-window terminal diseases should also be excluded.

I'm starting to think duplication isn't that big of a deal, it will be more like a 6-5 hockey game instead of a 2-1 game.

I agree with no death row inmates, I don't really consider them famous either. The terminal disease thing isn't as big of a deal, IMO, since how often do we really know about a celebrity with a terminal disease? Sometimes it happens, but usually the details are pretty vague about their prognosis.

The pregnancy rule is probably not a big issue, since it would be a very rare occurnance if it actually took effect. I don't think anyone would object to just ignoring it.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

I think Betty White and Abe Vigoda should be off limits. :D Kind of like PtC where the leading scorers are not available.

If you pick Abe and he goes down, we know where you live.

(Betty aint going anywhere. She's permanently preserved by spunk. Take that as you will.)

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

30 is a good number I think. Would sports owners like Al Davis or Ralph Wilson count? Also, I think Betty White and Abe Vigoda should be picked. I'm sure people who've done the pool is years before thought it was a layup, but they're still kicking.

I think they should count as well, but they won't be worth many points, if any at all because of the age-based scoring.

Sports owners, players, managers, coaches, presidents, commisioners, agents, broadcasters, etc. all count, IMO. Also, any kind of actor, director, singer, performer, reallity TV dooshbag, comedian, talking head, producer, world leader, politician, cabinet member, high ranking general, famous war hero, well known CEO, dictator, religious figure, heir/heiress...

Pretty much anyone that you can prove is somehow famous, they are eligable. (I should add, if the majority of people in the pool agree that someone on your list does not meet the qualifications, you'll have to re-pick) Personally, I'm not going to care, just don't pick your uncle Tom because he was in the background of a channel 4 newscast outside of a minor league baseball game in the summer of '92.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

I think 30 allows for some creativity. You can take some risks after your base 10-15. If it's only 10, there may not be a chance for separation.

Re: USCHO Dead Pool

Ok, here are the rules.

Anyone who wants to participate, select 30 names for your dead pool list.

I will make my selections by August 24th, and send them another poster that is not participating in the pool. Once I send off my list, I will make a post telling everyone to start sending me their lists. Lists must be submitted by the end of August, meaning They must be in my email box by August 31, 2010 at 11:59 PM Eastern time. I will post which email to send them to later, after my list is done.

The pool will start on September 1st at 12:00 AM Eastern time. If there is anyone on your list that dies between the time when you submit your list and Sept. 1st, then you will be able to replace them with anyone of your choosing, you don't get points for this person's death.

Eligible people include the list I posted earlier, plus anyone else you can think of. They just have to be famous somehow, you have to be able to prove it, and they can't be on death row. You cannot kill anyone on your list and still get points for it, in fact, if you kill anyone on your list, you will get -100 points. Animals are not eligible. If there is a challenge to the fame of someone on your list by a fellow competitor we will just go to a majority vote of all entrants, on whether the person is eligible. If they are deemed ineligible, you can replace them with anyone of your choosing, that is NOT on another person's list, since you will have seen all lists by then. You will have 2 days to challenge someone else's choices after the lists have been posted, after that, they're set.

Scoring:
We will score each death by using the person's age. You will get 90-AGE points for each person on your list. Which means, if an 85 year old on your list dies, you get 5 points. If a 92 year old on your list dies, you get -2 points. There will also be a bonus for if you are the only one to pick a certain person's death. 50 bonus points will be awarded in this case. The winner will be the poster that accumulates the most points in 1 year time.

The contest is over on August 31, 2011 at 11:59 PM.

Start putting together your lists, and I'll tell you when to send them to me.
