USCHO.com Poll - January 7th

Re: USCHO.com Poll - January 7th

No, it means that they are the National Champions until another one is crowned. It does not mean that they are the best team in the nation, no matter what, until that time.

His point is that results in the regular season don't matter much, and polls don't matter at all. The ONLY "ranking" that stands the test of time is "Who won more games in the month of March?".

I know. And I knew that's EXACTLY what he meant. And it's a good point.

Re: USCHO.com Poll - January 7th

Feeling that Bowdoin was a little slighted in the polls being ranked 4th as the lone undefeated, I did a little research this morning to see the last time this happened. I checked the last poll of each year that had only one undefeated team to find the last time this happened (I realize that Bowdoin's current status only fits this description if they were to, heaven forbid, lose this weekend. I realized that after I looked them all up and was too lazy to go back and look again) this is what I found:

2011/12: 1/9/12 poll Norwich (10-0-1) 1st, 20/20 first place votes
2010/11: 1/3/11 poll Williams (7-0-1) 3rd, 3/20 first place votes (1. SNC (11-2-0), 2. Oswego (13-2-0))
2009/10: 2/1/10 poll Norwich (15-0-4) 2nd, 1/20 first place votes (1. Oswego (20-1-0))
2008/09: 2/1/09 poll Plattsburgh (12-0-2) 1st, 15/20 first place votes
2007/08: 1/28/08 poll Elmira (16-0-2) 1st, 16/20 first place votes
2006/07: 2/12/07 poll Manhattanville (18-0-4) 1st, 15/15 first place votes
2005/06: 1/30/06 poll Middlebury (16-0-2) 1st, 12/15 first place votes
2004/05: 1/31/05 poll St. Johns (17-0-2) 1st, 6/15 first place votes
2003/04: 1/05/04 poll Lake Forest (11-0-1) 4th, 0/15 first place votes, Curry (10-0-0) 7th 0/15 first place votes (1. Norwich (8-1-0), 2. SNC (11-1-1), 3. Middlebury (6-1-0))

So what does this mean? Nothing really, since every year is different, but its some good food for thought.

I understand what you're saying, but it is tough to move up 6 spots in one week. I would have expected 3-4 spots, but not 6. Anyway here is what Tim McGarry, Bowdoin Sr Defensemen said about undefeated status in the Portland Press Herald today.

Right, I didn't expect a #1 ranking, but 4 seemed a little low. Thanks for the article, sounds like the boys have the right attitude.

Excerpt

Bowdoin has a legacy of championship seasons and winning seasons. Perfect seasons? That's not something Meagher or McGarry cared to talk about late Wednesday afternoon. Meagher's record at Bowdoin in an enviable 487 wins, 224 losses and 48 ties. Yet he has never coached an undefeated season.

"Being undefeated doesn't really mean anything," said McGarry, a senior defenseman.

He considered what he just said.

"Well, I guess it does at the end of the season. But going undefeated isn't something we set out to do. We were fortunate to have a game like last night. It was a bit of a wake-up call."
