US Junior Team Part II

Re: US Junior Team Part II

Very impressive USA win against a highly-skilled and mobile Swedish outfit.

I expect Canada to make some adjustments for Team USA - notably a different PP configuration for minimize the impact of blueline turnovers. Expect to see them move Ellis into a different role. I also expect Canada to aggressively forecheck and try to establish a physical edge in their home barn.

Team USA will need to keep those quick passes into transition, but with more precision. The key for the US will be to get to outside on Canada, get pucks deep and go to the net. And when Canada has the puck in their own end, make their D carry the puck or force them into D-to-D passing.

They've already made some adjustments to their powerplay during the game against Switzerland tonight. I expect them to continue to utilize it Tuesday.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

To bad the game can't be moved to ESPN or another more widely carried network, I think that this a HUGE sports story would draw millions more viewers if it was on basic cable... Can't wait to sit at home and watch history..... USA GOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: US Junior Team Part II

Are medals determined outright, or by points? If it's points, then the USA must win the game outright, and cannot take it to overtime. Even if we won a shootout, though points would be tied, wouldn't Canada have more GF, and therefore be the gold medal winners?

Re: US Junior Team Part II

Well I must say that I underestimated Lee....he made the saves when he had to.

Canada's D is hurting since they lost their top shutdown Defenseman with a seperated shoulder during the last minutes of the game against Switzerland. Apparantly another one of their better Dman just returned but is still not 100% after suffering a concusion.

So things are looking good already for the U.S.:D

Calm down, big guy. This isn't Canada, or Minnesota.

You could put this game on ABC, NBC and CBS at the same time and most people would not watch it. Junior Hockey in the USA has about the same mass spectator appeal as Tiddlywinks.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

Watching the replay of the US-Sweden game and I just noticed Lee has a white stripe on his mask. I believe the Markstrum has something similair. I'm assuming it's covering the Bauer logo. Awesome how you have to cover that up but all the European teams have big arse advertisements on their helmets/jerseys. :p

Anyone know what the black armband was for on the Swedish players? I'm assuming a memorial for someone who died.

I'll take that as "outright".

I simply asked because, at least in the 1980 Olympics, it was determined by points, so as if the USA did not beat Finland, USSR would have won gold if they beat Sweden, despite not being in the "gold medal game" (though possibly media-dubbed). I realize this is not the Olympics, but it also wasn't clear in the listed format.

The WJC used to be Round Robin to determine the medals, but that changed 15 years ago or so to the current playoff format.

Alright. Obviously I haven't been following the WJC until this year. Thanks for the clarification.

Given all of that now, makes me REALLY wonder why there are compricated tiebreakers in place. Perhaps on the off chance a team gets 3 points off shootouts? Even then, all you need is head-to-head.

It gives Canadian fans an excuse for running up the score in the first game of the tournament. Duh.

BTW, dude, 1980 was 30 years ago. Even the Olympics have been straight up winners for over 20 years.

Sorry, I thought you were just asking about how the medal round worked.

There is a round robin first round with two groups of five teams. The top team three teams from each group qualify for the medal round. The first place team from the group gets a bye to the semifinals. The second and third place teams play each other in the quarterfinals.

I just realized there won't be a USA-Canada New Years Eve game next year as they won't be in the same group. Sad.
