US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

So hard to say. Sure the role/success of any given multi national is important, but the real determinant is the temperament, will and trajectory of the government. Its not a surprise to say that the scenario could play out one of two ways, but I'd put 80% of it based on government developments and societal compliance/acceptance. Are the country's leaders truly shifting to the China/Russian axis in order to solidify dictatorial power and move against 'enemies of the state'?

I would watch government power structure posturing and see if intends to follow frequently used steps to consolidate power...and let that make the call.

I see a lot of bluster in his commentary of which he's already slightly walked back from. Russia and China do not have the expertise we offer , have nothing to offer as replacement, and if they should ever reach that point I will mostly be out. I don't see myself here for more than an additional 12-36 months.

If the CIA still has chops you may outlast him.

I'm sorry, but I think it's absurd that were getting bent out of shape over this. If we risk global meltdown because of a phone call to Taiwan, we have let it get way too far away from us in the first place.

No, that's not the way it works. When there is no higher authority to adjudicate problems, where you put the soup spoon becomes really f-cking important. All that dumb etiquette arcana is how you "always remember a woman's birthday but never remember her age." It keeps everybody at the table and communications channels open, and in a "war of all against all" like geopolitics communications is the only thing standing between us and Very Bad Things.

This is symptomatic of Trump not having a clue how diplomacy works. That's scary as f-ck, because while phone calls don't cause wars, phone calls cause breakdowns in relations which then create an environment in which escalation becomes a higher risk.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Dear god, trump is actually starting to make sense,

Mr. Trump’s phone call also violated a longstanding principle of American policy: that the president does not speak to the head of Taiwan’s government, despite selling arms to it. “Interesting how the US sells Taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment but I should not accept a congratulatory call,” Mr. Trump said on Twitter after the stunned reaction to his conversation with Ms. Tsai.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

I disagree. If we can sell them missiles and frigates, we can take a phone call. If a phone call is too much, a naval warship is too much.

Obviously it's complicated. But I'm also not going to say we shouldn't be engaging diplomatic relations with all countries, disputed or otherwise.

I'm not saying we shouldn't ever start a dialogue, but there are better processes for starting it and sucker-punching China isn't one of them.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Having doofuses like Trump, Farage, Le Pen, Hofer, and Salvini running their yaps will actually be kinda funny occasionally.

"That's one of the biggest political problems in the whole region. And the tragedy for me - and that's why you have these proxy wars being fought the whole time in that area - is that there is not strong enough leadership in the countries themselves."

Talk about an inconvenient truth. :p Transfer that from the "sh-t everybody knows but that you don't say in public" pile to the "sh-t everybody now has to angrily deny because some Nazi cosplayer tweeted it" pile.

Maybe these clowns will have their uses after all.

Sending more troops into Syria. Saw some pics yesterday of Aleppo, I'm thinking Dresden didn't look any worse. Unreal what they have done to that country. Its sad, pathetic, disgusting and whatever else you would like to add.

Even more infuriating that most of the carnage has been caused by Assad bombing his own city to hold power.
