Unrest in Egypt

Re: Unrest in Egypt

So it's following the Tunisia script pretty closely.

The King of Jordan (who IIRC has a hot wife who went to Harvard) fired his cabinet this morning. The Syrian leadership has been acting a little skittish, too.

I read somewhere that it was because his new PM cut something like half of the subsidies to the people, so he canned him, brought back an old PM, and restored the subsidies.

Pre-emptive buttkissing, if you will. And yes, he has a QILF

Interesting. Back when we were all Iraq the Model and other such fantasies, he was on record as saying he wanted Jordan to become like Turkey and transition to democratic rule. Which sounds great, but... um, dude, you've had 12 years. Didja get caught in traffic? Laundry day? What?

Obama has now advised Mubarak "not to run again." Fearless, Barry, fearless. ;)

Cairo crowd chanting (in Arabic) "may it be tonight!" White House also about to make a statement.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

That's more volatile than my wife. And as with her, I would tread carefully...

Things I have learned from the images on AJE:

1. Alexandria's coast is beautiful.
2. Most of the rest of Egypt is as ugly and inhospitable-looking as Phoenix.

hey now, it just takes awhile to recognize the more subtle beauty of the Sonoran Desert! Not all sand and such, like Egypt.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Fun wrap-up of our other most embarrassing allies from Foreign Policy magazine.

1. King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia
2. Ali Abdullah Saleh, Yemen
3. King Abdullah II, Jordan
4. Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia
5. Yoweri Museveni, Uganda
6. Islam Karimov, Uzbekistan
7. Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan
8. Nguyen Tan Dung, Vietnam

Newark? Now that's uncalled for!

To be fair, Newark is supposed to have improved greatly since the days you and I think about (circa 1976).

And to be even fairer, I've never been to Phoenix. I only know it second-hand.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Mubarak announces he will step down after this term. The protesters are unimpressed.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

...how are you going to handle food and sanitation for 2 million people for even one day?

It's Egypt. Sanitation is not really a priority, even when there aren't a million peope in one place (which is like almost anywhere else in the Arab world by my experience).

Per Al-Jazeerah, Mubarak has now announced he won't run again. And the various opposition groups/parties are coming together and setting negotiation terms regarding forming a new government with the Army's consent. First one, "Mubarak resigns, then we talk."

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Been gone all day. Who would have thought that one could catch up on world events on a hockey forum :p. You guys have more info than the radio (even NPR) and the networks. Off to watch AJE

Re: Unrest in Egypt

My favorite response to state TV's announcement that he was going to speak was protesters yelling "are you going to announce your flight number or just your departure time?" Don't let the door hit you on your way out...

Re: Unrest in Egypt

A rock fight just started between pro- and anti-Mubarak forces and there's now a tank pretty dangerously close to the people.

Shots are fired above the crowd to dissuade the conflict. Not successful

Alexandria is gorgeous...I wish I had spent more time there.

Parts of Cairo are very dirty but the images dont really do it justice. Parts of Cairo are just amazing.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Sounds like some organized pro-Mubarak groups are coming towards the protests in Alexandria and Cairo
