University of Maine Off-season 2024: Insert Pun Here

I feel like, given the incoming class, this is a year Barr is very active in the portal. Don’t think it’s a particularly hard sell given what’s currently in Orono and the trajectory of the program.

Now I feel even worse about the loss to Cornell. UMass takes DU to 30 minutes of OT , should be tired legs and Cornell can't beat them. Oh well, I guess Cornell really isn't that good.

If Boija was able to play then likely Cornell doesn’t get those 3 easy ones. It is likely then a tight low scoring game. Maybe then the game changes and you don’t leave it thinking Cornell was so good. When your goalie gives up softies it affects how the team plays around him and it changes the flow of the game.

You realize DU had an entire day off after the 2OT game, right? Cornell outshot Denver 25-18 and had multiple incredible chances in the final minutes to tie it.

I thought Cornell played great and had multiple good chances including at the end of the game. I did think Maine played better against them then Denver and Cornells goalie gave up a softie (first one) which did not happen against Maine

If outshooting the other team counts then I feel better as Maine out shot Cornell. Too bad it didn’t mean **** and Maine still lost.

It kind of doesn’t count. Grade A chances count more so. A lot of Maines shots were from outside and easily stopped and swept away by the Cornell defense which was great at challenging the in tight shooters stick on rebounds. The difference in the game was Shane made the saves needed and Ostman didn’t. The game before is an example of two goalies making the saves, and it took 2 Outs. Likely if Boija is in net it is a much much tighter/competitive game. When I saw Ostman in net to start the game I knew it was very likely Maine wasn’t making it past that game.

This site has Carter Wilkie in the transfer portal, which surprises me since he is RIT’s top scorer and a Hobey Candidate. Hopefully Barr is contacting him. With the two Nadeau boys you would think a high end transfer would be eyeing Maine since they could likely step into a great scoring line opportunity with the Nadeaus. Let’s hope Maine doesn’t lose any good players but add one or two from the portal and make Maine even stronger.

You can dump all you want on Ostman...but turnovers and same old same old attack also contributed to the loss...a total team/Coaching staff lost...and credit Cornell...they withstood the 5 minute major, then played a grinding finish there checks game...lesson learned...Maine had a nice season forward...but still in process of getting to the next level...size needed...puck moving d-man...big body's front of the net...and a Staff willing to change in game plan...not plan A over and over...I still think it was a great season and still tweaking/fixing ahead...that's where Portal may help in adding a 1 year player as in a power forward and a d-man that can skate out of the zone....but all in all the Barr plan is moving in a positive direction(imo).

I agree the coaching is also to blame. If Boija felt good enough to dress, warm up, and be on the bench all game you should have started him. It is plain obvious from me Ostman angles were off combined with not being confident and not playing big enough out toward the shooter. Alfie can spot that easily compared to me. The coaching staff should have started Boija. They wanted this Cinderella story where Ostman redeems himself in getting Maine a playoff win, I guess. But what they got was another substandard goaltending performance from a goalie with no confidence and it shows. You didn’t play Ostman on senior night because the seedlings of the tournament meant so much. Now you are in the spot you wanted to get and don’t play Boija? I say start him and if he tires so be it. Maybe he plays just fine. My hunch is he would have and it was the difference between being in a dog fight down to the last seconds or losing 3-1 with little hope coming back. So I agree with you coaching is also to blame in addition to poor goaltending.

Perhaps one of the stupidest posts in the history of the UMaine threads for many, many years. To wit:

The heartless git coaches who wouldn't play Ostman on Senior Night (because the "seedlings" were so important LOL), all of a sudden become hopeless romantics, and put Ostman in with the season on the line 'cuz "(t)hey wanted this Cinderella story where Ostman redeems himself"?!?

The head coach who has constructed multiple national championship teams for powerhouse programs in Schenectady, Providence and Amherst, and may be in the process of doing it again in Orono ... and a goalie coach who won a D-1 title for UMaine in '99 ... naively chasing a storyline??

I know "Swingtown" has some major drug problems ... I did not realize you were sampling so much of it though ...

Your opinion, no matter how long winded it is, is invalid. Given that you are a UNH fan by choice, you inherently lack good enough judgement.
