University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

On the Alfond rink schedule there are holds on the following dates. Bolded dates are confirmed home games.

10/10+11 | 10/17+18 | 10/24+25 | 10/31+11/1 | 12/5+6 | 1/9+10 | 1/30+31 | 3/6+7

That would be 16 home games, not taking into account any of those Sunday matinees they do.

Based on the current calendar they would be on the road the entire month of Feb.

My gut feeling is we won't see a Big10 opponent this year. Past schedules have included independents (no need to agree to a home and home agreement) and a few ECAC teams. The OOC is already strong with DU and QU on the road. My guess from a month or so back was Holy Cross, Dartmouth, and LIU and I'm sticking with it.

That said, I would love to show Gavin McKenna the Alfond Atmosphere

The roster for 2025-2026 is posted. Is this a sign another add is unlikely?

Also, I've got an old man yells at cloud take. I hate that Poirier is #93. I always love when teams are numbered 1-49.

I'm the complete opposite. I love when players take the high numbers.

Poirier will be the first Maine player to wear 93. Was hoping Rousseau would also keep 60 (another number that hasn't been worn).

Edit: Took a look and Lipinski will also be the first to wear 41.

I would think it does mean that the roster is finalized, seems logical that way.

I also noticed no mention of Rick Bennett on the coaching staff.

As a side note did we ever hear where Jason Fortier landed? I think I saw someone mention Niagara but not sure I ever saw a confirmation.

I'm getting the feeling whatever it was fell through but will see. Surprised not to see Bennett on there BDN sources are legit may be a contract finalization.

BU at home on Halloween is going to be a circus in a good way

Also surprised they haven't released the schedule yet

Probably unlikely since they are at 28 guys.

Two guys over the limit, which means they will need to designate two guys as “designated student athletes” which allows them to play until they graduate. I’m guessing they will pick two sophomores that played the least, which would be Stewart and Pichette.

So adding someone now, after the opt in date, seems disingenuous. Because you would need to designate another returning player.

Also, looking at the roster it would make a fierce battle for playing time even more fierce. I don’t have a crystal ball but the three forwards that are most likely riding the pine are Califiore, Pichette, and James. James though is likely going to be rusty a bit since he didn’t play much last year due to an injury.

Rick Bennett is official.

Can’t ask for a much better coaching staff. Having an assistant coach with head coaching experience is rare. Bennett was head coach when Union won the national championship. He also won the Spencer Penrose award. I hope he enjoys being at Maine and can work hard to achieve this kind of success with Barr. O’Connor sounds like a great recruiter to scout recruits. Should be great for the players having as strong of a coaching staff as possible for their development. Combine that with the new addition, weight rooms, locker rooms, video theater, cafeteria, recovery pools, etc… And with all of the high end new players added…

I haven’t been this excited for the hockey season to start for a long time.

Maine hockey is in a great position. BC and BU… Maine’s coming for you.

Maine would have been well served to find a way to increase Alfond capacity for their current renovation.....even if it meant getting rid of the weird and iconic roof. Another 200 Club Level seats and another 1K regular seats would have added approx. $700K per season in revenue.

It seems that might be the only way for the next reno, up.
With this reno they are locked into the place for many years to come.
With another xx0mil? Ditch the roof redo the upper seating and add more club or boxes.
For the next generation to figure out, Ill never see it, nor have enough funds to sponsor it.

Regarding Bennett as Maine’s assistant coach, looks like he can throw a nutty with the best of them. Alfond might have sticks and water bottles raining down on the ice again. Found this video of him when he was coaching Union years ago.

Looks like former Blackbear John Ronan was an assistant at Union that year. He’s the bald one that was in there on Bennett’s side.
