University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Larry Mahoney confirms the incoming freshman are Langlois, Usereau, Gerrior, Brock James, Nick Peluso and Lukas Peterson. I'm glad to see Peterson coming in, getting 20 year old freshman is great, but high level players aren't going to wait that long to get to college.

I wonder if this means Motew was an unrecruited commitment or if the article was written prior to 5 days ago? Also wonder if that means he's coming in this year or 2026-27, but that would make him a Jr. since he's an 03'.

With Peterson coming in that puts us at 8 defensmen (if Morse and Arnott enter the TP) or 9 if Motew also comes in. If bringing in Peterson this season prevents him from uncommiting than it's worth it in the long run. I just think it could take a season or two to adjust to playing in the NCAA being a undersized defensemen. Hopefully he can prove me wrong.

If the information Larry has written is correct and we get no more commitments than I'm slightly worried about our offense this upcoming season. We'll need lots of improvement from our current fowards, and our defensemen to play a huge part into our offense in my opinion.

My gut feeling is there is a CHL/Portal player or two to be added. I suspect the portal commitments slow down until the CHL playoffs wind down and the overagers commit to schools. It looks like there may not be a roster cap for this season so no need to be reserved in the additions.

I would have to imagine there's still another transfer forward or two on the way, or perhaps CHL guys. Going into the year with the current forward corps would be a mistake, despite the defense having tons of puck movers and likely able to facilitate offense quite nicely.

I don’t think Motew would commit to come in a different year. He likely wants to join this fall.

I’m happy that Peterson is coming in so we don’t lose him by putting him off a year. To score the way he did in USHL means he’s a very impressive offensively skilled defenseman. USHL is low scoring as compared to the CHL leagues it seems.

My initial reaction is who’s leaving early. I’m guessing one of the top defensemen is leaving to go pro. I am guessing Holt is the most likely candidate for that. Followed by Djuresevic.

Or could be someone beyond Arnott and Morse going to the portal.

All that aside it is looking like an incredibly mobile and offensive set of blue liners. I’m guessing North Mike will be pleased with the break out passing next season. 🙂

I hope they can work to develop the defensive side of their games.

I saw either an agent or media member on Twitter say that some CHL guys are delaying announcing their commitments to avoid potential playing time retaliation from their coaches. Landon Sim, a center for the London Knights has been linked to Maine and no one else as far as I remember. He was a 6th round pick for St. Louis, if they don’t sign him I wouldn’t be shocked if he committed once their season is over.

Yes, and the title of Larry’s article implies they will need to bring in more goal scorers. So I still expect two more, likely centers or if not they may be thinking of sliding Russell and/or Fowler to center. Both played well at center it seems.

I'm starting to wonder if just maybe Motew could be one of those guys that sees a change of position to forward next year. Given his skill set as an offensive-first player and a log jam with potentially 8 other defensemen in the mix, I wouldn't be shocked if Barr made that swap. Letting him just focus on his strengths could be a good way to hide some of his deficiencies as a defender as well.

I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised with Motew. At the same age as Peterson he put up 29 points in 57 games and was +26 in a better league.
He played major juniors, then got a shake at the AHL but didn't stick. Seems he likely went USports to get an education instead slumming it in the Coast. As crazy as it sounds, does ECHL talent crack this blueline?

Where do you see him having played in the AHL? His EP page dosen't show anything about that, and I would think that would render him ineligible for being a professional, although I don't think anyone knows what constitutes eligibility anymore, including the NCAA.

It says he spent time with Laval, sounds like it might have been a tryout? It doesn't seem like he ever signed a contract though.

Exactly this. If he never played a game it most likely was an informal look at him rather than an ATO.
