University of Delaware starting D1 WIH, joining CHA in 2025

That's the biggest add for D1 WIH in quite some time, no? By kind of a lot.

No disrespect to the NEWHAs or Lindenwood or whoever else but this is a rather large state school. When was the last add like this?

Michigan should be embarrassed University of Delaware brilliant move. How fast can womens hockey get to 50 D1 teams. Who's next?

Interesting that it will be one of those outlier schools like Syracuse with a women's program but no men's program. Are those the only two?

I can just hear all the bemoaning when UW plays them in a 2 game series yearly starting in 3.....2.....1......GO!

Michigan sponsors 14 women's sports. Delaware sponsors 11. I suspect that the Wolverines will get over their embarrassment pretty easily.

Well with that thinking.... good luck growing womens hockey. All that money Michigan has ... greed greed greed. Yet they speak of equality. Again fantastic job to the University of Delaware and to all involved in getting it done.

Lindenwood used to be in that category.

There's a few D3 schools like that as well. Hilbert is one that pops in my head without bothering to look them all up.

Except Syracuse and Lindenwood are real hockey programs with real coaching staffs, NOT a complete joke just going through the motions.

Good for Delaware!! The Blue Hens Football program just announced that they are moving up from the FCS to the FBS level only a week ago. Changes happening at U Delaware..

The two are connected. I believe the decision to start women's hockey was a Title IX issue tied to converting the football program to FBS. I welcome the expansion!

That's what was originally reported. But I thought I heard in the press conference Delaware denied this. They said because they were giving football a better opportunity, they felt it was only right (but weren't obligated to under Title IX) to also give women a better opportunity somewhere. And that somewhere was creating a new hockey team.

Nicole made some interesting comments about Title IX in the latest PodKaz which also leads me to believe Delaware was not under a Title IX obligation to create more women opportunities because they promoted the football team.

But of course, it's still great that they did it, whatever the reason.
