Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

Another point for Ghostisbehere, an assist on Galcheynuk's goal to make it 4-1 USA.

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

Shayne finished with 2 goals and an assist, and team USA won 10-2. Team USA has one more game against Finland on Saturday before camp ends.

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

Union has another recruit for 2013.. Mike Vecchione (F) from Tri-City in the USHL. He was the player I was alluding to in an earlier post that had decommitted from UNH. Below are links to an announcement on a blog and some of the history from the UNH POV. There was also plenty of discussion about this on the UNH Recruits thread a couple months ago if anyone is interested.

Vecchione was a hotshot player in Boston high school hockey and was considered a pretty big time recruit when UNH nabbed him. There's been plenty of speculation of whether UNH screwed up in how they handled him or whether he hadn't progressed enough to be ready for D-1 hockey this year. I wouldn't touch either topic with a 100-foot pole.. other than to say that he had a good, not great, year in the USHL last season (31 points in 51 games) and will be interesting to see how he develops next year and at Union. He certainly has the potential to be an excellent forward. He was rumored to be looking at other HE schools after decommitting, so this could be the first sign of U getting some F4 recruiting bling.

In other recruit news, Tyler Hynes recently competed in the Beantown Classic, a summer tourney of mostly NE Prep and Junior players, and had 5 points in 5 games for a more than respectable showing. Also of interest, he was listed on the Beantown website as playing for Omaha in the USHL, so hopefully that is where he ends up.. I haven't been able to confirm if he is actually on Omaha's current protected roster, only know that he didn't participate in Omaha's tryout camp this past June.

I wouldn't read tyoo much in Hines not skating with Omaha in June. His AA baseball team was playing in the playoffs then, and I'm guessing he wanted to see that through, as it was his last hoorah on the diamond. Add to that he was also mending broken bones in his hand, its not surprising he didnt skate then.

Oh, I agree it's not surprising he wasn't there. I'm just not sure that Omaha saved him a spot on the roster, as the competition in those camps is usually pretty fierce. Hopefully he is on the roster and will get a chance to develop in a very good league. It sounds like he has great physical tools and just needs some more experience to put it together.

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

I'm sure that Vecchione will be a welcome addition. The whole situation seems a bit muddled since apparently he decommitted from UNH because they wanted him to play another year in juniors which he is going to do anyway.

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

I was at the games yesterday & I was a little surprised by this. I thought he made too many mistakes with the puck along with taking 2 penalties, one where he swatted a Swede across the thighs with a 2hand swat just moments after getting knocked on his keester. I will say though that talking to some writers who have been there since Friday the staff and team do like him. Wasn't surprised to see Ryan (Cornell) & Hart (Harv.) go, they showed very little yesterday. Vesey & Blackwell (Harv.) really stood out though.

Surprised?
You must be confused because Gostisbehere didn't play in any games vs Sweden except for the last match up on 8/10. Three penalties entire camp - none which was for hacking anyones thighs. Instigation - Tripping - Delay of Game. He had a great camp. If he keeps it up during the Union season, he just might make the team.

Is it October 6th yet? Hard to believe the season is now less than 6 weeks away. Feels like Tampa was just yesterday.

Ditto - can't wait. Almost time to get out the bells and dust them off! :D While I like the idea of an early game, I sorta miss the Ice-Breaker. It was great to meet the players and mingle.
