Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

INCH A-Z - Max Novak: http://insidecollegehockey.com/inch/2012/08/30/az_novak/

In terms of returning guys, my top 2 breakout players are Novak and Ciampini.
I'd agree with Novak.. nice speed, work ethic and very good hands. Max seemed to figure things out more in the second half of the season and could compete for time on the top 2 lines. I like Ciampini but am not sure his skill set puts him any higher than 3rd line and maybe a top end of 15-20 points in a season.. which is not a bad thing at all. He does a lot of good things out there and has real leadership potential. IMO Mingoia has more breakout potential.. excellent speed but needs to figure out how to use it. And of course if Matty Hatch learns to bury the biscuit on say 50% of his breakaways he would be a 20 goal scorer LOL..

..and I know it may seem a little obsessive, but another series of quotes from Vecchione on his Union recruitment. In case you can't tell, he was a bit of a legend in Boston high school hockey circles and attracts the local media there. I would say that this pretty well confirms that U making the F4 played a big part in his decision to come to Schenectady.

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

Union picked up a commitment for 2014-2015 from Vernon (BCHL) goaltender Joe Young. Young is a '94 birthdate and played for the Boston Advantage midget program last season. Young was ranked as the 31st North American goalie by NHL Central Scouting for the 2012 draft, so he looks like a good get by the coaching staff.

The best part about the end of summer is the beginning of hockey. BTW, I understand that Nolan Julseth-White has signed or is signing with Las Vegas of the ECHL. Great young man and exceptional leader. Good luck to him.

Heisenberg is reporting another recruit for Union; Scott Davidson a RW who will be playing for Trail in the BCHL next season. Listed at 6-1, 175#, 17 years old. Played 11 games last season in the Kootenay JHL (a Junior B league in western Canada) and had 14 points before getting injured. Is reportedly a very good prospect and is listed as coming in '14 or '15. A pretty busy off-season recruiting wise so far.

perhaps it's just a mistake but if you go to the Trail site & clik on Davidson it show he's committed to the Q..... http://www.bchl.ca/leagues/rosters_...3&leagueID=2393&teamID=339744&playerID=834280

Highlights from Wicked Local interview with 2013 Union recruit Mike Vecchione:

How disappointed are you about the sudden turn of events at UNH? And feel free to elaborate on the timeline that followed your ultimate decision to attend Union College? Did you ever hear from UNH again after they learned about Union College?

It was just something that I didn’t expect, and it was a bit of a shock. It was definitely something I did not commit to. When it came down to making my decision, I was a little disappointed, but at that time I lost trust in UNH and felt it was the right choice for me to move on. After I de-committed from UNH in November, several schools contacted me, so when I came home for Christmas break I visited and met with some coaches at Northeastern, Providence, UMass and Yale among several other schools. It reminded me of my junior year at MC during that recruiting process. During the [junior] season last year, several schools met with me after games, and we talked about what they had to offer at their schools, but the one coach who always seemed to be at my games to chat and answer questions was Union’s Joe Dumais. He was honest and straightforward, and I felt they really wanted me at Union after talking a lot to me.So once I got home from Nebraska, I took a tour of a few more schools: UMass/Lowell, UConn and Union, and I finally made my decision to attend Union in the fall of 2013. I haven’t heard from UNH, but I’m sure we both have moved on.

When did you hear from Union College, and who approached you about this opportunity?

I first heard from Union in mid-February when Joe Dumais called me about this opportunity. Honestly, I did not know too much about Union. I skated with some players over the summer, and knew they were really a good hockey team. Then, after looking online I was really excited about the school’s academic and athletic programs. They are at the top of the nation in both.

What did the Union College officials say about you during the recruitment process?

They were very honest with me, to say the least. They told me I was the kind of player that they like, and I brought a lot to the table. They said they are losing some of their top scorers and playmakers over the next couple of years, and coach Dumais told me they would need me to pick up some of the slack. They told me my vision and speed is exceptional, and my best hockey is yet to come and that’s when they made me an offer.

Does this change any plans you might have had about your career, and with that in mind have you decided on a major at Union?

This does not change any of my career plans. I had offers to attend schools this September, but that’s not where I wanted to be. I believe if you want to be successful just work hard and stay focused, and things always workout for a reason. I’m so excited to be going to Union, because it’s such a prestigious school. I was planning on being a business major, which both UNH and Union offer, but I feel as though a degree from Union will give me the upper hand when looking for a job.

Two Union games will be nationally televised on NBC Sports this season. Both the January 11th game at Princeton, and the February 1st matchup from Messa Rink against Dartmouth will be aired live.

Re: Union Hockey Offseason Thread - That was fun...

That's awesome that they're doing a game from Messa. I'll be at the game and not in front of a TV, but it's still a big plus.

And good for Welsh, but hopefully the NHL plays this year.

With the likely NHL lockout, Jeremy could have a leg up on the NHL season if there is a season. By playing at the AHL level he will be in game shape and gaining pro experience which may give him a better chance of making the NHL roster this season. His contract situation was touch and go there for a while but it looks like it worked out very well for him.

Las Vegas head coach/GM on Julseth-White:

“Nolan was the captain at Union, and besides being a tremendous leader, he also brought a very good presence to the back end,” said Mougenel. “Nolan is on the AHL radar and will start his career with us due to the uncertainty of the NHL lockout. He’s one of those special players whose leadership and character are well documented.”
