Union Hockey Official off Season Thread: Can U Three Peat?

Re: Union Hockey Official off Season Thread: Can U Three Peat?

Cornwall knocked off Nepean in OT last night to win the CCHL title belt. Pontarelli has the Asst. on the GWG. The Colts move on to the Fred Page Cup tourney next week in Nova Scotia.

Pontarelli made a beautifu feed from behind the net on the championship winning goal to Johnson who was in front of the net for the easy finish (video can be found here http://www.pointstreak.com/flashapp/index_hockey_new.html?gameid=2181370).

It will be interesting to see if Union accelerates Pontarelli to come to campus for next season. If he stays in juniors next season he most likely needs to move to either the BCHL or USHL. I've watched the Colts play a couple of times this year on the internet and he's been head and shoulders the best player on the ice in all of those games. It's pretty apparent that he's outgrown the talent level of the CCHL much like Laliberte did during his last couple of years in the league.

I just hope he shows up, period...!

He's undersized, so I don't think we'll have an Andrew Johnston situation on or hands. However, you never know about de-committing though, that's what worries me most.

In more Pontarelli news, Michael was named one of the five finalists for Canadian Junior player of the year: http://www.cjhlhockey.com/news/news_detail.html?newsID=573

They might be, but I haven't seen anything 100% official yet.

There's also a rumor that UConn might come to Messa for one game, but I'm not sure where that came from. Somebody else might?

Come January, someone will be writing about Vecchione facing off against UNH. He originally committed there.

The UConn game was mentioned by the radio guys back when Union played UConn in October. Apparently Union had re-upped for three more games with them.

I was just going by my recollection that it was to be a two season home and home. BTW, on my way to Pittsburgh I stopped by State College and checked out the new rink there, from the outside. The place looks like a palace.

If you look on the Penn State rink thread, they actually have some cameras in place where you can see the construction progress on the inside (and outside, though you already saw that), and they are fed to a website.

Incredible what $60M can buy.

Re: Union Hockey Official off Season Thread: Can U Three Peat?

I think you're light -- I believe Pegula ponied up $102 mil for PSU hockey - $89mil of it for the building.
I had heard the $89 and thought that included the building and an endowment for the hockey program. $102MM, now that's real money. ;)

Re: Union Hockey Official off Season Thread: Can U Three Peat?

I am curious; what are everyone's expectations for the team next year? I don't feel like I know enough about the freshman and Stevens to hazard a guess.

You get right to the heart of the matter, don't you? ;). A question that's on everyone's mind no doubt.
