Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Of course. Cornell has a fantastic tradition. And it is in my opinion the best game atmosphere in college hockey, and one of the best in all college sports. So Cornell should be able to recruit almost anyone they want. Maybe they lose a player to BC, BU, UNH or Michigan, occasionally Yale, but by and large they should have their pick. Just bring the recruit to a game.
But they have been slipping the last few years. The magic is almost gone and teams don't fear playing at Lynah any more.
Colgate, where the rink is small and they are lucky to draw 1,000 fans, has a much better freshman class. Brown, which has very low attendance and an unexciting atmopsphere at its rink, just shut out Cornell in Ithaca.
So something is wrong. And I believe it's the philosophy of defense defense defense. Why would a skilled forward play for your coach? Trying to win games 1-0 or 2-1 is not fun. The game has changed but Cornell has not.
They wil be great again but not until the philosophy changes.

Kepler has diplomatic immunity. (Actually, for the keeper of Kepler's Law, I will honor a request for sanctuary.) :D

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Looks like a traffic jam is forming on the way to the byes. After a few ignominious seasons RPI probably thinks they can crash the party. They may be right if recent results are any indication. The Dutchmen are good but have squandered too much this season. Friday night seems to be a metaphor for their season. It's not too late but last year's magic seems more and more elusive save for the RPI game.

I think I figured out that Union would be in second place, a point behind Q, had they held on to each of the 3rd period leads that they lost...at Yale, at Brown, at Quinnipiac, vs Cornell, vs Dartmouth. That's 7 points they lost because of blown third period leads. Realistically, they probably wouldn't have won all of those games, but even if they held on for half of them, they would solidly be in the top 4 and maybe higher in the PWR.

Hopefully the Dutchmen will not end their season haunted by the "what ifs". The North Country weekend looms formidable with SLU and Clarkson playing some good hockey of late. One is reminded of the difference between ordinary and extraordinary..."that little extra". Union needs to reclaim "that little extra" to make a serious run in the final weeks of the season. A page out of the Ravens' playbook would certainly be helpful!

And it's not like they aren't getting help, either. With RPI now a TUC, there's 3 wins to help the comparisons (BTW, you're welcome for the SCSU comparison ;)). Things can still happen, but midnight may be looming.

Ryan that's a sad story in many ways. How about an update on Drew Brown, a Union recruit who also "followed" Nate Leaman to PC.

Thanks for the idea. I'll likely do something about him later this week.

It looks like we are catching the North Country squads on an ascendant note and playing their best collective hockey of the season if not recent seasons. This could be more similar to the doubleheader that visiting teams were used to to a few years past. I want to see Union play with the sense of purpose and poise that we have grown accustomed to but which has been notable in its recent absence. Any less of an effort and the results could be very disappointing and damaging to hopes of a top four finish.

It will be very interesting to see how the team plays next weekend. Judging by the post-game comments from Jason Tapp on the radio and the video of Bennett, I would say that this is going to be "hell week" for practices. Currently, Union is 3 points out of second and 3 points out of 10th! I still haven't seen anything approaching a consistent 60 minute hard effort recently and the team looks like they are gripping the sticks too tight offensively. The level of effort, poise and discipline need to improve, as does the confidence to make offensive plays without thinking too much or not enough. Right now I'm not convinced that this is a team that can win in the post-season regardless of where they end up. Hoping this weekend turns things in the right direction.
