Re: Union College Hockey 2014-2015 "ReUnion 2015? Why "Nott"?

Next week the Ivy's start up. There is a mix of conf and non-conf throughout the ECAC. With our (ECAC) poor showing saturday we are no longer in first but closely bunched and tied for third. All the non-AHA leagues are bunched together with NCHC in a slight statistical lead. The non-ivy ECAC are off to a good start. Two teams in the meaning less top 5 but more importantly we have the best conf record against HE in College Hockey and the only winning record against HE thus far. A good time to check again will be the end of November and there is a lot of non-conf play in late December.

Atlantic Hockey ----- 0-2-0 3-7-0 1-6-0 1-1-0 2-2-0 7-18-0 (.280)
Big Ten 2-0-0 ----- 1-0-0 5-6-1 1-2-0 2-6-1 11-14-2 (.444)
ECAC 7-3-0 0-1-0 ----- 6-4-1 3-5-0 1-2-1 17-15-2 (.529)
Hockey East 6-1-0 6-5-1 4-6-1 ----- 2-2-1 3-2-1 21-16-4 (.561)
NCHC 1-1-0 2-1-0 5-3-0 2-2-1 ----- 7-5-0 17-12-1 (.583)
WCHA 2-2-0 6-2-1 2-1-1 2-3-1 5-7-0 ----- 17-15-3 (.529)

Only time will tell. Last year we dipped in December and came on strong in the NCAA Playoffs and tied HE for the best record in College Hockey.

Exactly my thoughts. And we need to keep calm and play our game : Simple short passes (no turn overs please !!!!) to get into the zone. Also, we always have problems with teams that defend really high. I remember thinking that last year too. And Saturday's game was the same : we're OK bringing the puck to center ice, and then we loose it if the defense doesn't move back to the blue line.
I'm still very impressed with the freshmen... Shier and Foo especially.
That's a great point about SCSU defending high. A really nice coaching adjustment by Motzko on Saturday and it caused all kinds of problems for U, especially given the Huskies speed to close off gaps & pressure the puck quickly. I'm sure we'll see plenty of other teams doing this in some fashion too, including next weekend. Coaches will need to have the team prepared and the players will need to stay patient & disciplined so as to not give up breaks the other way. Like you say, "keep it simple".

Years past we were always a defensive minded team .... aka played like Cornell (but without necessarily the same results). Offense is sevy. Scoring at the buzzer is sevy. But offense does not win championships by itself. Look at St. Lawrence last year. We have got to go back and be that fundamentally sound defensive team. We certainly have the goalies to do it.

I saw a play Foo made on Friday. He was battling three Saint Cloud defenders and two were their big 6'5"+ 230 lbs guys. He would not give up. He was being ground to a pulp but he would not give up. To everyone's amazement he dug out the puck !!!! with is what, 160lb frame? and centered it. One tiny little skinny freshmen going up against their most experience upperclassmen !!! That is Union College Hockey ....

The freshmen are making mistakes but some are better examples of Union College Hockey then some of the upperclassmen. Last year is over, the banner has been raised. Get it behind us and lets play Union College Hockey !!!!
Generally agree with this, but I just don't think U is going to be a team to "out-Cornell Cornell" as Schottsky has put it in the past. The D are more mobile and good with the pucks on their sticks and the coaches need to figure out how to best take advantage of this. The forwards also are not going to be huge bangers (with a couple exceptions), but agree that they need to be aggressive and more in-your-face. I think it was Ammirato (all 5-9, 165#) not Foo you are talking about (though I do love Foo's game too). Roman's fearlessness to battle against players much bigger than him and his overall very sound defensive play certainly has grabbed my attention and I'm sure its why the coaches are giving him so much ice time. He has very good hands too, and is quickly becoming one of my favorite players. To me he's the biggest surprise among the frosh.

Overall there is very much to be happy about and I think this team can win a lot of games. I'm still skeptical of the ECAC grind and how this team will do later in the season, but having players like Vecks, Champ, Stevens and Taylor (BTW having a great season pointwise so far) could take this team far.

Since it is RPI week, I though I would ask a question. This link shows a picture of the RPI team.
http://www.rpiathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=hockey&

If you follow this link you will see the RPI coach sitting in the front and center of the team. I cannot remember any team photo, in hockey or any other sport, that showcases the coach like this. Am I wrong? Is this how team photos are normally shot? Usually, I see a coach standing behind a team, off to one side. Not drawing any conclusions here, just an observation. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I've seen this with some teams, but certainly not all of them. I don't think it's that unusual.

I think it's time for Connor Light to get into the lineup, we could use a defensive d-man.

Not unusual.
He is the only one with a huge smile though... (must be from that great contract extension he got given his great record...) <= it's RPI, got to give their "GC" a bit of a hard time :)

Re: Union College Hockey 2014-2015 "ReUnion 2015? Why "Nott"?

Any news on starting lineups for Union?

Union lineup
After sitting out last Saturday’s game, Kevin Shier replaces Tyler Hynes.

Forwards (LW-C-RW):
Daniel Ciampini/Mike Vecchione/Specner Foo
Roman Ammirato/Max Novak/Matt Wilkins
Mark Bennett/Ryan Scarfo/Sam Coatta
Kevin Shier/Eli Lichtenwald/Michael Pontarelli

Defense:
Jeff Taylor/Noah Henry
J.C. Brassard/Sebastien Gingras
Nick DeSimone/Charlie Vasaturo

That is a solid lineup !!!!
Novak and Wilkins back on the same line !!!!
Scarfo back at center
Starting 6 freshmen

I guess since RPI does not score goals that Union is going with an empty net ;) .

Hats off to RPI, and to their fans .... the Engineers played the 60 minutes that we were supposed to play tonight.

I guess we will find out allot tomorrow ... about the character of the team.

We are in last place in the ECAC with a record of 0-1

As bad as that game was, it probably could have been even worse. It was a troubling performance all-around for Union, especially after a lackluster weekend last weekend vs St. Cloud. It seemed like Union had nothing from the get-go tonight. RPI seemed faster, stronger and the Engineers won most of the battles throughout the game. After what likely was an (especially) tough week of practice, I was certainly expecting a better effort out of Union. A lot will have to change between now and tomorrow if the end result will be any different.

One word for tonight...pathetic. We'll find out a lot about this team tomorrow night.
