Union College Dutchwomen 2016-17 The New Era

Re: Union College Dutchwomen 2016-17 The New Era

It seems like everyone will get plenty of playing time this year. Union's roster only lists 19 players, and that includes 3 goalies. They're listed with having 10 F, 6 D and 3 G. Even when nobody is injured, they'll be playing two bodies short of a full lineup.

3 lines and 3 pairs of D play + 6 mins each per period. Doesn't sound like much but can end up ugly with injuries and suspensions. And both happen. MB was an unknown last year and came up big time and time again. Hopefully one of the three will repeat what she did however unlikely that may be.

Saturday Scrimmage against Concordia (Quebec) Loss 1-5
First period the girls looked good, high energy, lots of speed, lots of passion and aggression, goal tending was strong. Not many mistakes. Then the penalties started rolling in, could really never get a good flow to the game going. 4 of 5 Concordia goals were power power play goals. Penalty kill needs some improvement. 11 penalties in total for Union. 7 penalties from Concordia. It looked at the end that some were losing races to the puck, chasing, and general tiredness set in. All in all I thought it was a very strong showing for the team. Discipline and stamina are gonna be key to achieving some wins in the future.

As they were building up the program, the Clarkson women skated a number of seasons with 3 lines and 5 D.

And, due to injuries, we had 10 F and 5 D dressed in tbe 2014 championship game.

Most players love a regular shift and getting out there more often and that's what 3 lines and 5 D gives you. Most players will say that you feel more into the game with that type of roster. Quick frequent shifts keeps the energy higher too.

That is all true but everything unravels when you have one or two injuries or a suspension. It is not sustainable.

But it's great while it lasts! Makes for a tight team too. No icetime issues or healthy scratch decisions/issues/complaints.

Yes, I like the small roster for that as well. Gophers had no healthy scratches for a year or two before last year and it was nice. Although apparently it got tough having enough players to have a good practice, esp when players were healthy enough to play games but they wanted to let them heal during the week.

Talk about comparing teams at the opposite end of the spectrum! :) Winning makes teams dynamics much easier to manage across the board. Losing all the time and having unhappy players because of the above issues is a completely different story. Union (and many other weaker programs) will be much better off with a smaller roster (no more than 21) for the next couple of seasons until they can start winning a handful of games or more each year to begin what will hopefully be a turnaround for the program.

Happy to report that the streak is over with a 4 - 2 win over penn st. Way to go girls. Good effort and solid goal tending.

Very nice win. Gives them a great boost of momentum going into next weekend with their first road trip of the year against a very beatable RIT. Some other possible wins might happen against Brown, Maine, and Minnesota State. Imagine that!

This is a great article and gives a real good view of where this program is headed. Give it time and this is going to be a great place to go to school and play hockey. Go Dutchwomen!!

I thought it was a great piece also!

The coach's perspective that it is not about the wins. And the player's perspective about how important the win was and how great it felt. Both powerful points. I have watched Minnesota teams win some lopsided games and one thing I have taken from those is that it is very important for teams to persevere and fight through tough times and try hard all the time.

And as the coach mentions in this article, it's important for the players to be able to come back to practice and the team an STILL HAVE FUN! I wish them the best!

When is the last time Union won 2 games in a row?!?! This is very big for them, so congrats! (Wonder what Claudia is thinking right now)

Three shutout losses in a row for RIT. Wow, and only 16 shots on goal! Time for the coach to go back to DIII. :D

Hmm, and now they have a chance to sweep a struggling RIT. Would love to see it happen!
