Union College Dutchwomen 2016-17 The New Era

Re: Union College Dutchwomen 2016-17 The New Era

When fivedevs opened this thread in May, he/she wrote: "Day one of the Josh Sciba era in Schenectady. Since the program is moving on from the past, I thought it was time for a new thread. Try to stay clear of the negative if you can." Wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to revisit the "Union can't do it because it doesn't offer scholarships"...."who left the team"...."whose recruits are these anyway"...
Could we focus on the 16-17 team as it develops, and watch the season as it plays out? Y'all know I was very critical of the previous coach, but I'll move on if you will....
Thanks

none of the nuts on here will agree with me on this....but honestly....why do the Ivies even go through the charade of playing D1 anything, let alone women's hockey?

Why admit players who really have no business being there academically??

Ummm.... I'm sorry .... wasn't that Yale that won the NCAA men's ice hockey championship a few years ago? Also, they are very competitive in non-big money sports....

And again, bitter dude, the Ivies are totally need based financial aid and it doesn't matter how good you are in women's ice hockey. Know many girls with Ivy opportunities and scholarship offers at non-Ivy schools that chose the scholly school because the Ivy FA wasn't good enough for their family. If you're low or lower middle income (high FA) or high income (no FA need), Ivy is an easy choice. If you're middle or upper middle income, that's where you have to make the reputation vs cost choice that has been argued on this forum for years....

Apparently not..... also, Chris Cobb is the new Asst Coach at Dartmouth it appears, so he must have done something right in recruiting in his one year at Union...

as usual, you missed the point. I guess you're too bitter or too stupid to understand....You also are completely clueless as to how financial aid works...especially at an Ivy....to say they are making decisions on 'need based' is funny...since most Ivy schools have just a slightly different $$$ base with which to award financial aid. my point is...that money be better spent on students who actually belong there instead of a bunch of knukkleheads. [and Ive seen too many of the latter...who 10 yrs out have wasted that Ivy education].

Back to hockey:

Adding to may original list is Ava Reynolds D Northern Cyclones Looks like she's from Colorado. Looks like Coach Sciba is still pounding the pavement for recruits.

Couple of Alumni connections between Union and Cyclones staff

Re: Union College Dutchwomen 2016-17 The New Era

I am getting excited, trips planned for the season, tickets bought.

I have a daughter coming in as a freshman. I am excited with the coaching change. Admittedly at first I was nervous/relieved. Knowing that a change was needed, just not sure about who. After speaking with several parents either currently from Colgate or recruits about Skiba my mind has been put to ease. One common thing each parent said, "Josh is a hockey guy". Gives me hope. We will see how the season and team shake out after losing so many players, but I remain hopeful for a positive experience for my daughter.

GO DUTCH!

When I read these responses form you, I always wonder if you have any first hand experience at all with Ivy League school recruiting (BTW - like I do) or if its all hearsay for you. You're just flat out wrong on Ivy financial aid processes - it is all need based. You can argue their calculation of need but it is applied relatively equally across all students. Everyone going to an Ivy school has a special skill (athletic, academic, arts, whatever) - you don't get in without one. They don't apply particular FA favor to any one group within the students being admitted.

As to your assessment of wasted Ivy League education, I guess that is in the eye of the beholder - one person's waste is another person's success. Regardless, all schools have alumni that weren't particularly successful after graduation - that is why education is only a piece of your future...

...exactly, so why waste a precious and valuable resource [an admissions slot at an Ivy institution]...on a dope who happens to be good at hitting a piece of rubber with a stick or throwing a rubber ball through a hoop?.....and yes I've seen many who have been admitted and simply wasted 4+ years in school. To what end I don't know.

IDK...does attending one count? and a sibling? and a parent?

Re: Union College Dutchwomen 2016-17 The New Era

While the financial aid discussion is likely a factor for some kids, I'm not sure that Union and Harvard are really fighting for the same recruit at this point. Isn't it more likely that Union is recruiting against the other schools at the bottom with them (there's not a lot of Ivy's in the group) and scholarship schools are a bigger problem.

Winning can also solve a ton of recruiting issues. In order for that to happen Union will need to learn to score and sustain pressure in the offensive zone. They have always managed to have above average goaltending. Last seasons biggest issue was .7 goals per game and only scoring 25 goals. Goal scoring has been a plague to the program from the start. The all time points leader has a grand total of 68.

Last years record was somewhat deceiving in the big picture. They had 19 of their games decided by 2 goals or less and were really only blown out in a handful of games. There were only two games where things got out of hand early, the first against Clarkson and the second game against Quinnipiac. The inability to score was a major factor and will be big this year transitioning to a new coach and essentially relying on some freshman who have had some success scoring prior to college.

Cannot disagree however in many of those games MB was outstanding and was one of the main reasons you kept it close. With her transferring out, what can you expect from the new goaltenders? New coach, new recruits and a fresh start will surely help but believe that it will be difficult to replicate that type of goaltending performance. Maybe I am wrong and only time will tell.

Well stated. While there may be hope for the future at Union with a new coach, this season will NOT be the start of that hope. If this team wins a game this season I would be honestly shocked (I've been wrong before though!). It's probably two more years at least before Union fans can start to look for any meaningful improvement. Climbing out of a hole this deep is not a trivial task.

Goaltending was certainly a major factor last year. Hopefully the new surroundings will minimize the need for a goaltender to come in and stand on her head game after game. With a reliance on freshman you never truly understand what will happen until they hit the ice. Lets hope for the best.

You could certainly be right and they may not win a game. I suspect if you look at the schedule you could pick out several teams that are in very similar positions as Union has been in these last few years. I guess my point is that I wouldn't be "shocked" when they win a game or two. Hey and try to be a bit more positive when trolling the Union page...:p
