Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic City!

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

My biggest problem with the reffing was that they let way to much go the last two nights and it was very lucky nobody got seriously hurt out there. There were 4-5 very scary hits on Saturday that resulted in only one penalty called, and that was an elbowing on Welsh that probably should have been a 5-minute major for contact to the head. It also seemed to me that the series turned when Gate figured out they could basically run Union players with impunity. Not saying that Gate didn't deserve to win, because Union is known for tough play and can more than protect themselves, but was unfortunate that a change in reffing philosophy seemed to have an impact on the momentum in the series.
I heard that Don Vaughan said something to the effect of how the officiating played a part in their strategy. Why not? If you can get away with a hook here and a hold there, keep doing it until they call you on it.

Of course, this begs the question...why have a second set of officials? Why not assign one set of referees/linesmen to the full series? I'm not trying to claim a conspiracy theory, but the officiating philosophy clearly changed the course of the series. I understand the officials change on a "daily basis" during the regular season, but this isn't the regular season.

Whining about the refs... where have I heard this before... y'all may not want to imitate RPI's bad sides, though we're flattered. ;)

But in all seriousness, sorry to see that you guys ran into the Colgate buzzsaw. I knew that any team running into them were in some serious trouble, it's too bad that both of us received the short straw in our respective rounds. All the best in the tournament, and with a little bit of luck, we hope to see us face off in St. Paul. :)

I think it's time to either change the title of this thread, or start a new thread (now that Atlantic City isn't happening).

If you look at the video on the ecac website they show the game winner and there was a nice take down by a Colgate player on Wayne Simpson seconds before the shot was taken. Only thing I have to say on this is if the officials are going to call the game the way they did the whole night on Union then this was an obvious interference or cross-check. Hats off to Colgate for sticking around though you cant let an underdog stick around for that long.

How 'bout: Union College Hockey: Don't quit with the Cleary

That works.

Other options:
"Union College Hockey: St. Paul or Bust"
"Union College Hockey: We must stand tall in St. Paul"
"Union College Hockey: The Crawl to St. Paul"
"Union College Hockey: Let's have a ball in St. Paul"
"Union College Hockey: New GOAL - St. Paul"
"Union College Hockey: No AC, but now it's time to turn up the heat" (get it? heat/Air Conditioning)
"Union College Hockey: Atlantic City is dirty and crime-ridden anyway. **** it."

Thoughts? :)

While AC is still on our collective minds as well as in the thread title, has anyone heard what advance sales are like? Any predictions? For that matter will the ECAC be trustworthy in announcing attendance figures? With the Cornell traveling masses, there could be a bit of a bump in attendance, but the other participants don't have a great traveling reputation for the most part.

There were still lots of tickets available when I checked as recently as a week ago.

Apparently, they DID call the game the same way the whole night. :p

This could be a good thing for Union if you fans want to think positive. If you look at years in the past from the conference tournaments, many teams don't make it to the championship game of their conference tournament or even the semifinals but still fair well in the NCAA tournament. Some examples Miami from 2009, lost to Northern Michigan in the quarterfinals of the CCHA tourny, but they went to the National Championship game that year. Notre Dame won the CCHA tournament that year and lost in the first round, Michigan was also in the championship game against Notre Dame and lost in the first round of the NCAA as well. Now lets go to the Hockey East, Vermont lost in the Quarterfinals but still went to the frozen four. Also in 2009 3 number one seeds in the big tourny all lost.

Now lets look at 2010, New Hampshire did the same thing as Union they lost to the last seeded team in quarterfinals. We all know Yale did the same thing last year and went on to beat ND and almost beat BC. The point im trying to get at with this whole rant is that I feel like it could be better for Union to lose a game before the tournament. Yes they aren't playing a week before the tournament but still they have time to practice and get better. They haven't lost in 11 games coming into the series. Sometimes its a better thing to lose and watch that other team celebrate because we all know that is what drives people. They want to work just as hard to win that first game now.

Maybe you disagree with me I don't know but i think this series loss could benefit this team.

Union can definitely salvage the season with even just one win in the tournament. With 2+ wins nobody will ever think about the Colgate loss again. Lose in the first round and it's a terrible end to a previously great season. Also I'm kind of glad the tournament was moved to Atlantic City now. I'd be very upset if they missed out playing in the TU center yet again.

Stud, what you say seems to make sense. One thing I am concerned about though is that Union just came off a two week layoff, played 3 games, and now is looking at another two weeks off. I don't know for sure, but playing 3 games in a month leading up to the NCAAs could be a drawback. Either way, I'll be elated once their getting in is confirmed. Well at least I saved a trip to the pit called Atlantic City .;)
