Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic City!

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

Glenn Merkosky was seen at the game last night. He used to play for the Adirondack Red Wings of the AHL, but is currently a scout with Detroit. I'm not sure how often NHL scouts are in attendance, so maybe it's not all that rare of an occurrence to see one there.

It's not that uncommon at all.

Watching at home so I can go back and forth between the AIC/RIT game and the Union game. I got a bad feeling in my stomach, which means AIC will probably end their season tonight. Hopefully it isn't for Union too.

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

I don't want to be maudlin when the program is on such a high, but I think we'd best get used to the idea of tonight or if necessary tomorrow, being KK's last game(s) at ItsaMessa. From what I've been hearing, it's all but certain that he will go pro at the end of this incredible season. I hope that what I am hearing is wrong or that perhaps he changes his mind, but I'm not optimistic.

I talked to Keith a couple of weeks ago and he said he didn't think he'd be able to go/ if it would be worth it yet. Granted that was a couple of weeks ago, but I'm really hoping he'll be around for another season. Although, since I'm graduating this year, it technically won't matter, it would be nice to come back next year and still see him here.

HOWEVER, tonight's game..... So disappointing. I was depressed at the fact that tonight was supposed to be the last home game I see Union play before I graduate, but I didn't want it to go to three games. They're better than that, they just didn't show it tonight. They didn't show up for the second or the third period. I can only imagine what Leaman is saying in that locker room right now, but I hope it gets them going for tomorrow. I don't want to look like RPI and loose to #12 Colgate early in the tournament. Ugh.

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

I can't believe they lost. That third period was an epic disaster. I don't know what to say after an ending like that. Just beside myself. I'm lucky I was able to get a night off from work to go tonight, but now likely missing tomorrow night's game is just a killer!

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

Well that sucked the big one...like they say a 2 goal lead is the most dangerous lead in hockey...

But maybe this is a good thing...they know what they have to do....this team will bounce back.....

must say also a few questionable calls tonight...esp near the end of 3rd period when Colgate players collided and had like 7 guys on ice yet no call....but that is hockey...

LETS GO UUUUUUUU.....

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

Well that was pretty similar to last night's game only this time Union got bit.. but have to give big kudos to Gate for playing much better overall and thoroughly outplaying U in the 3rd period. And while I'm definitely not blaming the refs for this one, I was not happy with the way this game was called. The refs let a lot of crap go on both teams and basically only called a penalty when someone fell down.. the age old "let'em play its the playoffs" ref strategy. That typically does not help the more skilled team. Colgate seemed to figure this out in the 2nd period and started to hit Union anytime they were near the puck and it really seemed to wear U worn down in the 3rd period. And then there was the bad ice that started again in the 2nd period and had the puck jumping all over the place.. very frustrating when U had their lone 3rd period PP.

Nothing is "in the bag" for Union regarding making it to AC or the NCAAs and the players better realize that quick. The boys better come out with a better effort tomorrow and initiate the contact with Colgate more like they did on Friday.

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

One of the best things I saw all season was Dennis The Zamboni Guy get a rousing ovation during the 2nd intermission. With Union up 2-0, the crowd assumed it was the last time they were going to see Dennis (who's retiring) go around the ice. Of course, that great spectacle was followed by one of the worst things I've seen all year.

Have to wonder what is going on with the ice surface...granted it was a litle warmer out on Friday night but the temp in the rink was also warm...then you add in 2500 people and it gets extremely warm.....lets hope they cool it back down and cool the surface temp back down......

Probably shouldn't get me going on this.. but when they replaced the refrigeration system a few seasons ago they apparently didn't have the money or chose not to replace the piping system under the ice surface. Its sorta like replacing the engine in your car but keeping the same old bald tires. Whether this would have improved the ice conditions on a 50 degree day with a packed rink remains to be seen.. but gotta believe it would have helped. Regardless, the ice conditions have been the same for both teams. Union deserved the win Friday and Colgate deserved to win tonight.. tomorrow's another game.

Supposedly, there are supposed to be no online ticket sales for game 3. Game 3 tickets go on sale at Messa Rink at 2 PM. However, I just bought tickets online and received a confirmation e-mail. Go figure.

Boy, what a debacle! The boys looked past the 3rd period and thought they had moved on when the still had to come out and win another 20 minutes, and they failed! you can comment on ice conditions, you can comment of refs, but the only accurate comment is that U left their game in the locker room in the 3rd and Gate totally outplayed them. They need to take a look deep inside themselves and decide if they want to continue in the post-season, and more importantly, are they willing to work and sacrifice for the post=season. This is a team with potential, a team with promise, but if there is not a solid effort for 60 minutes this evening, then this will be a lost season in my book. Sure there have been major improvements, yes, a Cleary Cup, yes a top 5 ranking, but if you can't finish...then you haven't lived up to the hype. we all know the boys can win this, it just comes down to what is inside them and if they want it.

I have to echo these sentiments. Nate Leaman said they stopped competing and Wayne Simpson pretty much confirmed that. As a fan, I was relatively comfortable with a 2-0 lead after two periods and it appeared the players were, too.

What was more disappointing was that Union should have already learned this lesson - a 3-goal, third period lead against Clarkson didn't hold up, but they got away with that one. This is the playoffs, though...Union should have stepped on Colgate's throat and finished the job. You don't give your opponent any momentum this time of year.

I can't say that I know what to expect tonight, but if this team has shown us anything this year, it's their resiliency. They have come back strong from disappointing efforts before.

Finally, can we all be convinced that this is the most competitive league in the country? All four QF series are going the full 3 games.

What are the chances of getting in to the game tonight, thinking about driving over. When it's sold out will they continue to sell SRO tickets ?

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

The defensive zone coverage on all 3 of the Colgate goals was pretty much nonexistent. I was a bit disappointed however that Kinkaid could not come up with at least one save of the three. I don't mean to throw him under the bus, but in every game your goalie is expected to make the routine saves and at least a couple of the nonroutine variety. His team for whatever reason was struggling out there and as the last line of defense really needed a lift from their goalie particularly one who is getting some Hobey Baker buzz. I would look for a big bounceback performance by the team and Kinkaid tonight, or at least I hope so.

When I was in the men's room between periods 2 and 3, I overheard some Union fan says to his friend, "Do you think our 2 goal lead would hold?" The response from his friend was something like "I think if anything we'll increase it by a couple".

We may not have as much talent, but we had more heart last night. You boys took us for granted and we simply outplayed you in the 3rd.

I'm not sure how you can confirm the first part of your statement ("took us for granted")but I certainly agree with the second part. I posted last week that Colgate was playing with "house money". There may also be somewhat of psychological edge in that if CU hopes to extend their season they need to get to AC whereas the conventional wisdom has Union in the NCAAs either way. I personally hope Union disregards that type of approach because nothing is a certainty when you rely on factors and criteria which are outside of your control. This league is just nuts, 4 series, 4 game 3s.

The momentum changer for Union/Colgate was in the third period when Colgate killed Union's penalty. Union was up 2-1 and during the powerplay could have put the game away. However, Union quit creating plays and started forcing plays. You could see them gripping their sticks a little tighter for whatever reason. That successful kill gave Colgate life. Not only did they dodge a bullet, they killed off the #1 power play in the nation. Outside of the final 10 minutes of the third, Colgate really didn't have that many scoring opportunities. One huge positive........Flavin lives to......ride again:)

You could try to buy tickets online and pick them up at will call. Otherwise, tickets go on sale at 2 PM. Not sure how they're doing SRO, but the last 2 nights they began those at 6 PM.
