Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic City!

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

Frustrating game to watch. Western is very well coached, they did a great job of taking away space from Union all night. I didn't get to catch the first period, but we had control of the game possession wise for most of the second and third. However, Western was very well positioned and made it extremely difficult to generate opportunities once we got in the zone. Union needs to grab the lead early tomorrow and force Western to take more chances.

Was there a streaming broadcast? I thought there was audio only. I was at a holiday party and could only follow on Twitter (BTW, tweets were coming in all game until the last minute when they abruptly halted)..

I think we're starting to see a disturbing trend here. Union can whale on lesser competition but especially on the road and against stronger teams, the scoring, particularly 5 v. 5 falls off precipitously. Reason for concern? Possibly. I think Presizniuk's absence may be taking its toll. Let's hope for a reversal tomorrow.

WMU has a video feed, ~$11 for a month subscription.

Unfortunately, this is starting to confirm the very disturbing trend noted by Wholin. U is 6-0-1 against Atlantic and 4-4-2 against everyone else, and more importantly, has only one win against a non-Atlantic team with a winning record. Hate to say it, but tonight's loss pretty well cooks U's PWR chances of qualifying for NCAAs. The team will have to win ECAC.

Agree with Dutchfan's analysis of the game. For whatever reason, the crisp passing and teamwork just isn't there at critical junctures in these games. WMU won all the important puck battles and did a great job disrupting U's offense all night. Unlike Atlantic foes, U had very little room to operate all night. Prez's return should help, as he is excellent at making pinpoint passes in tight places, but obviously isn't the whole solution. These games all come down to a couple key moments and opportunities, and U isn't taking advantage of them. U had a PP tonight in the last 3 minutes of the game and barely got a sniff of a chance. It's not like the team played badly tonight or wasn't working hard, but really need to have one or two players step up and make big plays offensively in games like this - ala Mario & Walters last season. I know having depth at forward is great, but IMO when Prez returns they need to put him on a line with Welsh and try to develop a true top unit.

Even with this loss, Union is tied for 10th in the PWR.

I guess that's good if puzzling news. Other than RPI who we beat (sort of) I'm not seeing the big wins. Of course that entire formula leaves me stumped. FWIW, Krach has Union at 16 which to me intuitively seems more realistic.

I'm thinking of buying the streaming broadcast. If anyone reads this before the game today and watched last night, I was wondering how the quality was. It appears also that the subscription renews automatically so you have to cancel before the end of the 30 day period. I almost got burned on one of those last year, I think it was Dartmouth, but they were nice enough to cancel without charge.

A win this afternoon is pretty much mandatory for a bunch of reasons. Go U!

The video quality was OK. A little better than Union's but not as good as RPI's.

Wow, what a miserable weekend. After last night's close loss I thought Union would come out breathing fire, but it was not to be. Tough to get a real feel on the radio but it didn't really sound like they competed tonight though WMU needs to be credited. They seem like a solid team which grabbed early leads in both games and knew what to do with them. Union needs to get a handle on its offensive problems before resuming league play.

Union falls to 15th in the pairwise after a terrible weekend. Western looks like a great team but Union needs to beat teams like this if they want to accomplish anything on a national level.

You're right, OOC record against good teams has to improve. Also down to 18th in updated Krach. The poll rankings are also likely to plummet, but that's the least of our worries.

Don't worry! No polls 'til the new year! ;)

This all feels a liitle more comfortable...in the sense that we find comfort in conditions that we are accustomed to, and now the season is taking on it's usual tone. We all get excited over success early on, not looking at the quality of the opponanent but enjoying big numbers of goals scored. This translates or transforms itself to the "we're going somewhere" excitement. We play tight in league games, enjoying some success and chalking up loses to "hey, it's ECAC hockey." Make a trip, play some midwest hockey against the type of team we should play even up with...but need to beat in order to see some post-season success, and reality strikes. Monday morning...deflated egos...what went wrong?...we're not that good?...but what about the way we whaled on those other teams?...sigh...I love Union hockey!

Yeah, what you said.

I think this team will be fine and still has a realistic shot at a first round bye, assuming they can get untracked offensively, just a bit. Looking by comparison at where things are this year and last year at this point, I see some similarities. At this time last year, the seniors, particularly MVT, Wally and Schreibs began to assert themselves as senior leaders do and basically took the team on their backs and said "follow us". I really think it took the first half a season last year for the team to realize just how good they could be and to play like it. I think the hopefully iminent return of Prez will help a lot from an offensive and team leadership point of view. I don't mean to diminish the role and importance of Captain Brock, but having a guy out there like Prez forechecking and going into the corners and "dirty areas" as coach says, can go a long way toward keeping things on track. This is after all a very young team for the most part and it's my guess that they are looking for that inspirational and battlefield leadership.

Take Heart your never as good as you think you are or as bad as you think you are.If I had a list of teams I didn't want to play in a do or die situation trust me Union would be on that list...worse and better days are coming that you can be sure of...you guys will be fine.

RPI Fan here. That is a nice article and tribute to Nate. I love the rivalary between us. BTW -Not starting trouble but always thoght that Nate will be a candidate for Harvard job at some point.

Ditto on the rivalry. I think Union could well have lost Coach after last season but the College stepped up and extended his contract as well they should. Harvard would have seemed logical, especially given their current woeful record. I also thought that being from Ohio, that the OSU job might have made sense for Nate when it opened last season. Anyway, great to have him around for a few more years at least. And BTW, better keep an eye on Seth, his stock is no doubt rising as RPI's has been. ;)
