Union College: 2019-2020

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

Was the sound system a priority? It seemed OK to me.
I keep reading that the facilities are substandard for a D-1 program, including the ice freezing system.
I hope there are other improvements on the way.

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

The boys started skating together in “Captain’s” practices on Monday. Most of them have arrived at school. Official practices start next week. Hockey season is coming.

Do we know who the Captains will be this year?

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

I am always amazed of the importance of incoming freshmen classes are to college hockey. How hungry will this Dutchmen team be? How fast can they develop? Leadership? Team personality? Injuries? Past success does not translate into future results ... a stretch goal would be a .500 and a top half of the ECAC. There are so many variables that go into a successful hockey program. Lets get the show on the road.

Are the chairback seats at your rink still just the lower sections on the penalty box side of the ice, or have they been added to the side with the teams' benches during a renovation?

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

How did we lose him? What happened? I thought he was pretty good. We could sure use his scoring right now !!!

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

ALBANY — The Union men’s hockey team was picked to finish eighth by the ECAC hockey coaches in their annual preseason poll, which was announced Tuesday.

I would put us in the bottom 4 somewhere. Its going to be a long season.

Re: Union College: 2019-2020

Hi Union fans - a bunch of us are making the trip from Buffalo to see our Huskies play in October. Any advice on where to sit as a visiting fan? (which end the visitors shoot on twice; how to not end up sitting right next to the student section; etc.). I have to work on getting tickets set up.

Also, any advice on good places to go before and after the game. Oh and where to park. Thanks.

Here is a layout of the rink: You want to sit on the "Main Entrance" side of the rink. There are box seats and bleachers seats. The Union student section is behind the home bench.

Here is a campus map. The rink is 71. There are several parking lots on campus but most are restricted. The parking lot marked 163 College Park Hall and the one cross the street "Visitor Parking" always has room. Also, if you get there early enough you may find parking on Lenox Road or one of its side streets. This is no "Matthews Area" or "Agganis" as we are D-III in all other sports so prepare to be disappointed.

Can't help you re pre and post game as I have been out of touch and for the past 40 years have resided in the Boston Area. Maybe one of our Schenectady fans can help. Good luck this season.

Hi there! I like to sit about halfway up on the upper deck toward the middle of the ice. (Students sit in section O,P,Q area) I should mention that most of the seats are wooden bleachers that can become crowded during a popular game, especially with Hockey East visitors. Parking is available at the Nott-Seward lot. The rink can be reached via shuttle or short walk through campus. I believe that the visitors shoot twice on the end opposite the press box. Many fans and some players visit the Van Dyck restaurant/brewery after the games, though I can't remember if they take reservations. If you're looking for something to do during the weekend, the New York State Capitol tour doesn't disappoint.

Hope this helps! I enjoyed visiting the Northeastern rink last year and am looking forward to the upcoming games.

If you like Italian food, Johnny's on State Street (couple miles from Messa Rink) is great. Reservations are a good idea. https://www.johnnysdowntown.com/

If you're into a greasy spoon kind of place, Mike's Hot Dogs on Erie Blvd (mile or so from rink) has been around in Schenectady for decades.

For more the tavern/bar scene, Slicks (127 S Ferry St) is another popular place with a long history. Sandwiches are massive.

If you are a fan of craft beer:
- Frog Alley Brewing on State St. downtown -- newly opened they are slowly finding their way with their beer....recent improvement
- Druther's Brewing has a tap room/restaurant at the Casino near campus. Established local craft brewer
- Wolf's Biergarten has large selection of craft beers and ciders (Erie Blvd. downtown)
- If you will have a car, Wolf Hollow Brewery in Glenville is worth a ride (15 mins from downtown)

Food:
Little Italy is the place to be for great Italian. More Perreca's is my choice, but there are many great spots. Save room for dessert and pastries at Civitello's or Villa Italia.
