Union College: 2018-2019

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

Life and death against lowly SLU. What's up with this team? Some nights they look unbelievable, other nights, like the original DIII team they were. Coaching issue imho.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

This team is still a work in progress. You would not have expected that given the number of seniors and the experience on the team. It does not have the look and feel of a Rick Bennett team. Clarkson beat us to the lose puck all night as we were just standing around but we were moving against SLU and outshot them by a huge margin 54 to 19. A 2 on 0 break and SLU missed the net on a short handed opportunity. We could have easily lost. We took 5 penalties to SLUs 1. I think this game was an attempt to get our offense moving. Short cycling with line changes. Going forward we need to keep up the aggressive play, take the penalties, but keep the shot count up.

You can be aggressive and keep the shot count up without taking lazy (tripping/hooking away from the critical area) or stupid (spearing last night and punching the night before) penalties..
Take enough penalties you will accomplish 2 things - you will tire out your penalty killers (take note who they are - those the guys you want tired by the 3rd period?)
or you will give up more goals than you can overcome..

The Brown game and the Clarkson game were very similar - completely uninspired play all over the ice.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

It's a strange team that beats the then no.1 team in the country by five goals and the next night gives up two shorties within minutes in a loss to a team with just four wins. Do we dare mention the Clarkson shellacking and the near miss at unfortunate SLU this past weekend? Is this really a top twenty team? One is left scratching his head. Rick Bennett is one of the best, in spite of some doubts by a recent poster. Looks like he will have his work cut out for him in coming weeks.

You can count another recruit out, as well.

Thomas Lancombe committed in November but is now playing in the QMJHL. There goes his NCAA eligibility.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

I saw Harvard vs Clarkson play at Bright this evening. Both teams were exceptional and looked to be in March form. It was the best hockey I have seen this year. Clarkson skating and passing is top notch. They have offense. Harvard is playing tenacious defense and has incredible speed and had a great transition game. Both teams seem to be playing a notch above us. (I did not see the Yale Game). It was an incredibly physical game by both sides but not one penalty was called.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

It seems like recruiting has taken a bit of a downturn. Though if you look at Heisenberg’s recruiting list it appears that many of the top programs deal with decommit’s. Any talk about the quality of the guys they’re recruiting and could potentially bring in? It seems like right now there is a lack of “top end” talent since the graduation and departure of Vech’s and Foo. In order to continue to prosper you need to have a couple top end guys to build around...you saw last night with Snively who was clearly the best player on the ice when he was out there. At this time we don’t have anyone quite like that. Though if you listen to coach in the past it’s always stated that they don’t count on Freshman to carry the team...it would be nice though to snag a few of the top tier guys again...Go U!

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

We have 11 league games remaining. Thus far we have accumulated 11 points in league play with our 5-5-1 record. In general, over the past 20 years, 28 points got you into the top 4 and a bye for the first round of tournament play. Last year Princeton, despite not making the top 4, went all the way. We need to win 8 and tie 1 of our remaining 11 to get to 28 and a first round bye. We can only afford 2 more losses in league play.

Re: Union College: 2018-2019

Union is the moth flirting with the flame. What a miserable performance, save for the third period before they surrendered the winning goal. The last minute gift of a Brown penalty never bore fruit with the extra men. The pairwise ranking is slowly slipping away from serious consideration at season's end. The team is redefining mercurial. There is still time for redemption but one has to wonder.
