Union College: 2017-2018

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

RE: Cornell's pep band...
I love college pep bands and think, in general, that they do add value, ambiance and excitement at games.
Having said that, I find Cornell's pep band to amongst the most rude in all of college hockey.
Yelling "YOU SUCK!" (and other stupidities) at referees and opposing teams when they take the ice at the start of the night doesn't seem like NCAA/ECAC 'good sportsmanship' to me.
I have seen them do this at home and on the road this season.
Of course, I also find Cornell fans and students, in general, to be quite rude.
The whole shake-the-newspaper thingee during opposing team introductions seems weird (and boorish) to me, as does crinkling up the newspapers and throwing them on the ice after intro's at Lynah.
I think they call that 'tradition,' as rink crews are always prepared to go out and clean up the ice immediately afterwards.
And, yet, I have friends that are 25-year Cornell season ticket-holders that complain about the lack of sportsmanship of other teams, fans, coaches, etc.
I just think the whole conecpt (good sportsmanship vs. bad sportsmanship at college hockey games) is interesting.
And, indirectly, it ties into rules for hosting (rude) pep bands.

Very well said !!!

But at least our pep band showed up. Where was yours on Senior Night?

As to "being rude" by saying things like "suck", how about your fans yelling suck after we yell Red, during the National Anthem.

Yeah, we do have some "traditions" that you may not like. It comes from having a strong program, going back over 50 years. Maybe over time you'll develop some of your own.

In 2013-2014 in Bridgeport in the Regionals, we actually rented the Sacred Heart band to play for us. They were pretty good :D

This is priceless and comes from The Harvard Crimson, March 1, 1986:

Fan Violence Sparks Cornell Report
http://www.thecrimson.com/article/1986/3/1/fan-violence-sparks-cornell-report-pperhaps/

On the ice, an ugly display of violence culminated with Cornell Captain Mike Schaffer attempting to hit Harvard Coach Bill Cleary with a slapshot. At the game's conclusion, Schaffer tried to run Cleary into the boards.

Cornell lost the game, 11-3, but some unruly student fans who wanted to match the ice-bound confrontations battled with their own campus police to a hotly contested draw.

Could this be the same Mike Schafer who is now the Head Coach? More Cornell Tradition?

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

The Dutchmen will have to run the table now in order to get a bid to the NCAA tourney. It seems a bit perverse, with only three teams has won more games, that Union is in this position. A reclaimed preseason ranking is meaningless as the Pairwise is the only thing that counts. Tall order or not, Union will be making some more noise.

In February our penalty minutes per game dropped from 9.39 to 7.37. We are 55th in the country. Princeton is 33rd
In February our blocked shots went to 135 and for the year we are 501 vs 504 for our opponents.
In February we are scoring 3.5 and giving up 1.75

If we can play like we did that first game against the Sioux, consistently, we got a chance.

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

Time to step up for the Playoffs ! Who will rise to the occasion......
A great year for U to finish 2nd in the ECAC. Very nice to get the bye week and home ice. As Colgate taught U in 2010/11 be ready for anything come playoff time.....

Cornell's band doesn't yell "You suck!" when the opposition takes the ice (instead what you mentioned with the newspapers); "You suck" is the RPI fans during introductions. Clarkson does "You're a big puss" ("sieve sieve sieve..." for the goalie), Union just does a straight boo-hiss, and I don't recall the traditions of any other ECAC teams not yet mentioned, if any. Maybe it's just me, but when you pay to go to the games, it doesn't seem so bad to act up within reason when it comes to harmless words you hear at pretty much every away game. I can understand the adversity to it, especially hearing from my sister-in-law after taking my 3-year-old nephew to a game. Too much crackdown can have quite an effect on the atmosphere at games, which is most certainly one of college's big selling points over MJ.

Borrowed from the Cornell Hockey Blog ELynah Forum

Dear President Ainlay,

This past weekend I attended the Cornell University at Union College hockey game.

Although the hockey game was very exciting, and unfortunately my team lost, I was very upset by the way that our pep band was treated. Our pep band regularly travels to away men’s hockey games. Unfortunately I feel that the pep band was mistreated in a way that I have never seen from any other school.

In the late 80s/early 90s, Clarkson's band was not allowed to bring any instruments into Gutterson (Home of UVM). The last year before the banning their goalie threw his glove at us and flipped us off after he got pulled (after letting in 5-6 goals). They continued the ban for 3-4 years I think; we brought kazoos and other assorted noisemakers, yelled louder, and continued to win. Eventually they gave up.

Was this the same Mike Schaffer that is the Big Reds current head coach?

The problem with that is I was at that game and exactly none of that (except the final score) happened, which may not be surprising given the Harvard school paper couldn't even spell Schafer's name correctly. There was a clearing pass from halfway down the ice that hit the Harvard bench but it was nowhere near Cleary. These teams were arch rivals likely heading towards a playoff rematch and Cleary was working the refs as, if anybody else here remembers him, was his wont.

We never did get that rematch. Clarkson beat Harvard in the SF at Boston Garden, just after we had beaten Yale. We then beat Clarkson in the title game for our 6th ECAC championship. We have won 6 more since.

Years later when Cleary was Harvard AD and Schafer was Cornell coach they were mutually complimentary about each other's dedication to Ivy League and ECAC hockey, much to the annoyance of herpa-derps from both fanbases.

I was actually surprised Coach Jones was able to put the nix on your band drumming during the course of play. When he came in is about the time when they stopped.

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

I am always in support of fans and band members from opposing teams who make the trek to enjoy a hockey game in someone else's barn. I am sure that the majority of Cornell hockey fans love the game and the good time that comes along with it just like the rest of us. This includes the occasional vocal questioning of a call by an official in frustration. I can agree that at times the Cornell pep band does take their spirit too far for my taste. For example, loudly blasting noise out of their instruments directly in the ears of fans who are trying to leave the arena after the game is over. I have heard that this is a problem at RPI as well. However, apart from a couple of minor things, there was great hockey and a great atmosphere at Messa on Saturday! Can't wait to see the actual playoff hockey next weekend. This team has potential!

I gather UnionFan has never been to RPI. For if he had, he'd realize that the RPI band is about as far away from the main exit as you can get and is high up in their section. Unless they decided to come down toward the ice, it's almost impossible to think that they could be bothering exiting fans. It's funny how ideas persist, without anyone checking the facts.

As far as the Cornell band "loudly blasting noise out of their instruments directly in the ears of" exiting fans, they don't pick their spot to sit/stand and play, Union does that. The band, like most pep bands, start playing when the game is over. That's true of almost all schools. If it offends you, you can talk to your school and have them move the band to a different spot, have them silence the band, as was done this weekend, exit a different way, or you can leave early to protect your ears.

I think if you ever went to a school where there were dueling bands, as well as fans and players, then you'd see great atmosphere. If you haven't gone to away games with your school, you should make the North Country trip once. There you'd see the difference between atmosphere at Clarkson and SLU. You can guess which is better. It would even be better if Union could bring a band with them.

Absolutely agree that it is an awesome atmosphere and I wish the Union band could have been in attendance. The RPI pep band makes the annual trip to the HFH an especially fun one and I've enjoyed seeing each team's band and fans go back and forth over the years. My only minor complaint was that, on Saturday night, the Cornell pep band was loudly playing their instruments on the sidewalk immediately outside Messa rink after the senior night festivities had concluded. Many still in attendance were walking through. I also recalled that, at RPI last year, the Cornell band came down to the ice and loudly played their instruments toward the fans who were attempting to leave out of the back entrance of the HFH. I just believe that, due to the folks walking a couple of feet in front them, they shouldn't have been playing their instruments as loud possible. Having said that I have great respect for the passion of the Cornell fan base. Hopefully we will meet again in the playoffs.
