Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

vicb and Dutchman, were you at the game last night. I rarely get riled up about a call but that call on Yau was both puzzling and IMHO turned the game around...not saying the Big Green would have ended winning it but certainly not a 4 - 1 outcome. Both teams had no idea what was going on and even the announced thought it was on Union which would made it an extended 5 x 3. Thoughts?

I was referring to the way Hahvad played against RPI. And I was watching the RPI - Hahvad game while listening to my Knights blow another game.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Thanks Pokey for the clarification! It looked like more in-fighting as the two were tangled-up with the puck at their skates. IMHO either a no-call or off-setting would have been the appropriate call as there was no advantage either way. But you have to fight through it which is what a young Big Green team has to learn while Union capitalized on it. You guys looked good especially Foo and Sak.

After going back and watching the replay I can Agree on that - probably coincidental.. As for Foo - He is just so quick and never stops - And Sak doesn't
get nearly enough recognition for the job he does..

Thanks again Pokey for your due diligence and un-bias review of it; I tried to go back and review it myself but I guess you can only get it live and not archived. Additionally, coincidental is the better term, probably got football on my brain with the term off-setting. Either way, good luck the rest of the way to Lake Placid and hopefully to Chicago for the Frozen Four.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Can anyone comment on how Dufour looked playing on the second line? I know he has been in and out of the lineup.

Also, is he playing tonight?

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Two more very good wins for Union. The Harvard win was a big one for Pairwise where U is now logged in at #6. Still a lot of hockey to be played though......
On to the Mayor's Cup and the North Country for two more big games.
Hopefully Sak can continue his stellar play.
Go U !

Played both nights, not a lot of impact from my point of view. That whole line really never got it going all weekend, having only 2 shots on goal combined and never looking like they had the chemistry to make any sort of plays through the neutral or in the offensive zone.

Nice Video from local CBS News
College hockey's top scoring line resides at Union
http://cbs6albany.com/sports/content/college-hockeys-top-scoring-line-resides-at-union

Can we keep it up? We still have to face some of the top defenses in the country
Cornell
St. Lawrence
Harvard
Q-Pac

Harvard didn't do a great job of containing the top line, but there were some good shifts from the second & third lines that kept the puck in the Harvard zone. While not on the stat sheet, I thought Ryan Walker had two excellent games over the weekend - he seemed to be all over the ice...kept pressure on the Harvard D, good forechecking, and good job on the PK.

These upcoming games will test the depth. Union will need scoring and overall good play from the non-Vecchione lines.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

I hope Alex can keep this up.

Sakellaropoulos, who receives the award (ECAC Hockey Player of the Week), for the third time this season, stopped 65 of 67 shots over the weekend, including a 31-save performance in a 2-1 win against No. 2/3 Harvard on Saturday. He led ECAC Hockey and ranked tied for third in Division I with .970 save percentage and tied for 7th with a 1.00 goals-against average. The Tinley Park, Ill. stopped 17 shots in the third period against the Crimson, also making 12 saves on the penalty kill after turning away 34 shots in Friday's 4-1 win against Dartmouth. He boasts the best win percentage against conference opponents in Division I (.875), while his 15 wins on the season (15-3-1) are tied for the Division I high.

Saturday's game was the best I've seen Alex play ever. He kept it simple, squared up to shooters quickly, stayed poised when there was traffic in front of him (which happened a lot), and gave up almost no rebounds. Didn't hurt that this was the best team defense I've seen from the team in about 2 seasons too. It really was an incredible 60-minute performance and one I didn't really think the team had in them. This was the real "Union Hockey" I was used to seeing in the Leaman/early Bennett days - filling passing lanes, knocking pucks off of sticks, winning puck battles, and basically not letting the opponent play the type of game they wanted. As the game went on, Harvard was reduced to dumping the puck in the zone, chipping it into the slot and trying to bang away at it to get past all the Union defenders. It definitely played to Union's advantage and I thought in the end U's first line was just a little better than Harvard's and that was the difference. Also very proud of the "worker bees" and how well players like Walker, Dufour, ZachE & Burton played. Everyone stuck to the gameplan and Harvard amazingly didn't seem to have an answer. How much of that was Harvard being in a funk from the night before is hard to tell and who knows what will happen in the next meeting, but this is most optimistic I've been about the team in the last 2 seasons. If they play like that when needed, they can beat anyone.

Tonight's game is total toss-up in my mind, as I'm not sure where RPI is at and whether U will think they have it in the bag before they step on the ice. Hoping for a good clean game and another good effort from the boys. Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo U!!!

Totally agree. No way will they underestimte RPI after what they did to Harvard.
