Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

This is another game (bu-Union) I wouldn't mind seeing every year

Agreed !!! We had another strong turnout at Agganis. In sections 102, 103 and 104 there were at least as many Union Fans as BU Fans. All three matchups these past three years have seen some great back and forth hockey (1-1-1).

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

This should be a good trip!! And we get to play against BU again, FTW this time!!!!!!

Not quite. Given the way the Friendship Four is scheduled, you will play Yale in the first game, and will only play BU if Union and BU both win (or both lose) their first games. Also, don't be surprised if you guys lose a league home game in 2018-19. I have a feeling RPI will lose their league home game next season against Clarkson, and Colgate lost their league home game to Brown in 2015. Yes, it sucks.

Oh no - We only had 14 home games this year as it is!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Harvard's transition game is quite good. We need to disrupt it as much as possible next week, while somehow making it into their zone. It'll be an interesting game for sure.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Dartmouth is solid but inconsistent. Dartmouth's SOS is 12, tops in the ECAC.
They started off the first four games at home with a tie against Harvard and Cornell and defeating Michigan and Colgate. Their next six were on the road where they went 1-5-1. There last 5 were at home again (2-2-1) and their two losses were ranked teams. They defeated UNH 5-0.
Their last five games show great improvement in two categories.
They have scored at east one powerplay goal in the last 5 games, holding opponents to 4 (three for UML). Huge improvement in the power play. In their first 10 games, they were 2 of 56 on the power play. In their last 5, they are 5 of 16 on the power play.
They have kept their penalty minutes down, in the last 5 games to an average of 6 per game. Huge improvement over 18 min per game for the first 10 games.
Buffalo is a solid athletic goaltender and 6th in the ECAC. He has two shutouts.
In the last 5, they are averaging 3.6 gpg but giving up 3.8 gpg. They are trying to improve their offense but taking some risks.
Against one of the best college hockey teams in the country, UML, they were tied at 4-4 with 9 minutes to go. A UML goal and two ENG's in the last 2 minutes made it 7-4.

Time to come out smoking !!! They are taking risks to get their offense moving.

The bigger key for Union will be not taking penalties.

We are best (lowest) in the ECAC (#12) in PM at 10. Can't get much better than that :) But wait, we are also the best (#1) in the ECAC by a lot in shorthanded goals @ 5

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

The lineup for tonight against Dartmouth. Interesting. Eli still out. Mark Dufour brings some bulk to the Scarfo Line. Walker centers the fourth line and Zach back.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Not if they play like they played against RPI last night ;) .

The line of Vecchione/Foo/Vidmar certainly lived up to its billing last night. While they did not dominate especially on 5 x 5 you could tell that they were very talented in "making" plays. IMHO I thought Foo, out of the three, was the best last night as he showed hands, poise, and grit. Vecchione showed dead-head speed that would back off defenders. Vidmar I could not really tell, nothing really stuck out, maybe that's a good thing. Good luck tonight against a Hahvaard team that should be bringing it after last night.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Take the win, interesting all the goals were powerplay or empty net.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

vicb and Dutchman, were you at the game last night. I rarely get riled up about a call but that call on Yau was both puzzling and IMHO turned the game around...not saying the Big Green would have ended winning it but certainly not a 4 - 1 outcome. Both teams had no idea what was going on and even the announced thought it was on Union which would made it an extended 5 x 3. Thoughts?

The officiating was a bit questionable all night - how many times do you get to punch a guy who is just standing there in the face after the play is blown dead??
and if you are going to call interference then call it all the time... As for the call on Yau.. He grabbed him and the announcers did go back and say so after the replay..
a big grab -- no but a grab ..

As bad as the ECAC refs are, the HE refs are much much worse. Dartmouth is playing extremely well especially considering the # of freshmen who will continue to improve. Not looking forward to playing the Big Green in Hanover.

Thanks Pokey for the clarification! It looked like more in-fighting as the two were tangled-up with the puck at their skates. IMHO either a no-call or off-setting would have been the appropriate call as there was no advantage either way. But you have to fight through it which is what a young Big Green team has to learn while Union capitalized on it. You guys looked good especially Foo and Sak.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

It was great to see Sak make some huge saves against Dartmouth. Will be interesting to see how Harvard reacts to the big loss at RPI. U better start off strong with a full 60 minutes!
