Union College: 2016-2017

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Thanks ADK for the NCAA link. We went to the game, but I didn't want to record it at home because I tend to be very superstitious and was afraid I'd jinx the team. Loved seeing all the Sioux fans cheering for U. They lost a heartbreaker for sure.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Looking forward to seeing U do battle on Saturday it should be a playoff type atmosphere at Messa. Let's hope the mojo from UVM carries over. Any word on Vidmar getting back in the lineup ?

Hope so. ND plays a puck possession game like Quinnipiac and has outshot opponents 596 - 437. Pray to the hockey gods that Alex has an another good game. Looks like the puck drops at 4:00 pm.

NOTEBOOK

On the injury front, Bennett wouldn’t get specific about which players would be back in the lineup, other than saying he expected at least three of them to miss the game. Forwards Sebastian Vidmar and Ryan Walker have each missed the last three games. Forward Eli Lichtenwald and defenseman Greg Campbell have been out the last two contests. Defenseman Vas Kolias sat out the Dec. 18 game against Vermont after getting hurt against the Catamounts the night before.
During Wednesday’s media availability, only Kolias was in a red non-contact jersey. . . .

North Dakota has two players participating in the World Junior Hockey Championships in Montreal and Toronto. Freshman forward Tyson Jost, the Fighting Hawks’ second-leading scorer with seven goals and 11 assists, is playing for Team Canada. Sophomore goalie Matej Tomek, who has yet to see action for North Dakota this season, is with Team Slovakia.
Sophomore forward Brock Boeser, who was expected to play for Team USA, recently underwent wrist surgery and is out until January.

Thanks for posting the link to the Minnesota game.
What an unbelievable game. The Ghost, Novak and Sullivan goals were all pretty epic. The Vech, Eli and Champ goals were just shear relentless will to score. It took 6 great periods of hockey to beat BC and Minny with everyone contributing to the wins.
It will take another 3 great periods to beat UND today.
Go U !!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

First off, Union webcast was top notch quality. It was worth the money. Very impressed especially since webcast quality can be pretty sketchy.

As for the game, fun game! I didn't expect such a defensive battle but I'm happy that UND was opportunistic and capitalized when they had some chances. Also, it was real nice to see Cam Johnson have a stellar effort in net. A lot of UND fans have been critical of his recent play.

Good luck the rest of the season to the Union hockey team. Unless of course UND/Union happen to meet again this season :). I plan to attend the Union/UND series in Grand Forks next season.

No kidding. The camera work and play by play was first class. Union is very solid. A few different bounces and that game would have gone the other way.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

I thought the webcast was very good as well... for $9 it better though ;). Union has some serious talent. Great game.

That was not the usual broadcast - it was on a TV station so it was their camera work and broadcast.. and it was really good.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

it was a shame that the gift giving season lasted 11 seconds into the first period.
Other than a few of those blind passes to nowhere showing up I felt it was a good strong effort
from Union and some serious saves by the UND goalie to keep it tight. Pretty well played considering
the long layover both teams had to come back from. With any luck we will see them again later in the year..

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Two tough turnovers two goals........Sak had no chance on either goal.
The U power play was non existent for most of the game. Tonight UND was the better team but it was great to have them at Messa. Next stop BU another terrific test for U.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

The most crowded I've seen Messa in a while !!
A good effort overall, against a very good UND team, packed with talent. I was quite impressed by the talent some of their guys showed. Very good puck handling, and really strong against the boards. Their 2 goals are identical: a guy parks in front of the net, receives a stellar pass and roofs it. Perfect execution.
The positives for Union: we competed hard for 60 minutes, only took 2 penalties, and had a real chance at the W. We had some grade A chances that just didn't go in (kudos to UND's goalie, he saved the day a couple of times). The team as a whole put in a lot of effort, I didn't see any slouchers.
The not so great: our PP had been getting better over the past 3 or 4 games, with a lot of good movement and real chances. Yesterday, not so much (we had trouble getting in their zone). We also lost a lot of pucks in neutral ice, and had trouble getting the puck in their zone cleanly.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Two years ago at Agganis, local Boston Union fans really made their presence felt. "Union vs. #1 Boston University via NBCSN 1-3-15 (HD)" We were so loud that one NBCSN announcer joked that he thought he was in Schenectady. :D https://youtu.be/7wI06rXUd70 Can we do it again? We had fantastic fan turnout. Great barn and a great opportunity for local alums to show their support. On Thursday, let's make Agganis rock !!!

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

BU has incredible depth.

“Yeah, but it’s also an opportunity for guys that we know are good players who haven’t had a chance to get an opportunity,” Quinn said. “I think you saw that the other night when we played Yale — seems like two months ago — [Shane] Switzer and [Brien] Diffley played really good games. We knew that they were really good players. We’re just fortunate that we have depth, and it’s an opportunity for these guys to step up ...." I also have a good feeling about this one Coach Quinn. A chance for us to step up as well.

"Travel blog: UND in Schenectady (final update) By Brad Elliott Schlossman.
http://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/und-hockey/4189408-travel-blog-und-schenectady-final-update

"Union didn't score a goal until there was just 2:41 left, when Cam Johnson was nice enough to let one by so we could see what Union's game operations do for a home-team goal."

We will have to remember that next year when we visit Grandforks. ;)

It would be pretty impressive if Union prevented UND from using any of their goal celebration fireworks during next year's series!

Quinn stressed committing to playing the body when Vecchione or Foo have the puck. “You can’t spend one ounce of energy fishing for the puck because they’ll make you look bad,” Quinn acknowledged. “If we can do that and play at a pace, we’ll have a better chance to slow them down. I don’t know if you can stop them, but to slow them down is what we’re looking to do.”

This is where BU will really miss Greenway and McAvoy.

Re: Union College: 2016-2017

Not sure what to think about tonight's game as BU is essentially missing about 2/3 of their top 2 lines, so could be hard to gauge the outcome.. other than that if U doesn't do well its not a good sign. Of most concern is that the top line, and pretty much the offense as a whole, has been shut down in the last two games against "tougher" competition. Will be interesting to see if that trend continues. I'm also not surprised to see that opponents are focusing on being tight defensively when the Vecks line is on the ice. Hopefully the other lines can find some room and do some damage, and the first line can take advantage of any opportunities they are given.
