Starting up a new thread for this coming season, 2016-2017

The schedule is out. Union will play 14 of its 34 games at Messa, its fewest at home since 2011-12. That does not bother me. Some years we are a better road team than home team. I believe our ice sheet tends to negate any speed advantage we have.

North Dakota - NCHC
Michigan (2) - Big10

BU - HE
VT (2) - HE

AI - AHA
SH - AHA
RIT - AHA
Niagra - AHA
HC - AHA

Tournament - RPI

5 AHA matchups .... that's a change. Only the Mayors Cup for tournament play.

Six seniors

* started and played on National Championship Team.

Is there some way to tie it into the old one? I'm not too savvy about these things.

Another impressive freshmen class. Offense and Speed.
Incoming Freshman: The incoming recruits: Luc Brown - Forward (Ontario Junior Hockey League) - Most Valuable Player, League Leading Scorer, Most Improved Player, and First Team All-Star. Luc will help our line-up by being a scoring threat on the Power Play and 5 v 5. Ryan Burton - Forward (British Columbia Hockey League) - Team Face-Off Award. Ryan will provide speed with an ability to score. His speed will remind some of former alumni, Matt Hatch. Zach Emelifeonwu - Forward (Ontario Hockey League) - Team Captain. Zach's leadership, speed, size and physicality will provide our line-up with a new dimension that we feel will help our team this season. He has been regarded as one of the Hardest Hitters in the league while doubling his point total from the previous season. Vas Kolias - Defenseman (United States Hockey League) - regarded has one of the fastest players in the USHL while providing offense from the blueline. Vas plays with tremendous passion and will certainly help our team speed from the back end. Ben Newhouse - Defenseman (United States Hockey League) - Ben will add speed and reliability to our line-up. He put up solid offensive numbers in his first year in the league to round out his game. Anthony Rinaldi - Forward (Ontario Junior Hockey League) - First Team All-Star. We look for Anthony to provide speed, skill, and the ability to score. Anthony had a breakout season this year and was one of the top goal scorers in the league. Notable: this incoming class has four Canadians and two Americans.

Yes new commit for them.
 
Some jersey changes are apparently coming along for next season with a look similar to the Arizona Coyotes. They look good - doing away with the black bars on the shoulders and hips.

The jersey to be worn on new year's eve, however, is quite humorous with a large Nott Memorial printed across the chest.

Interesting off-season tidbit:
So yesterday was my sister's birthday and she brought my two nieces up to the house to visit. (I am now back home since 3 strokes in late 2012 landed me disabled in a wheelchair.) Well as it so happens, 2 Union Civil Engineering classmate were visiting me as well and brought their kids. So we all went to the neighborhood playground for the kids to play. I have my Union Hockey ball cap on as I usually do. As we're leaving a young couple calls out to us "Hey, did you go to Union?" so we stop, and tell them that all three of us did, and we all graduated in '01. She says they did too, She was '04 and he was '05. Turns out it was Matt Blabac and his wife and they had moved into the neighborhood just down the street from the playground. So small world. Alex Todd's wife almost stopped in as well as she was home while Al gets settled in his new job. Too bad that didn't happen.

So small world, never know who you'll run into when you display your Union pride. They had seen the hat but wasn't sure if it said Union or they were just imagining it!

The regular uniforms seem pretty good. I like the Nott Memorial jersey so long as it's special occasions only. If it were a regular jersey, I agree it'd be comical. And I kind of want to buy one! Hope they raffle them off or sell them in the bookstore.

The bookstore has a sale on authentic hockey jerseys (last years models) 50% off. Home Garnet only I believe. I picked one up. Only jersey I currently had was the one they used from '97 to '00, the Habs horizontal stripe design. A buddy from the team, had the name plate changed to my name and gave it to me as a Christmas gift a couple years ago.

Big press in the Boston Herald ... another Malden Catholic player ... the same school as Vecchione. Malden Catholic is possibly the top hockey high school in Boston.

Malden Catholic used to a top hockey school along with Catholic Memorial and Belmont Hill. CM has stumbled the past few seasons and Bill Hanson's removal as head hockey coach has stirred some controversy. I wouldn't say any of the local high schools are top destinations for the blue chip prospects anymore as a lot of the best kids go the junior route or USHL.
