Union College: 2015-2016

Re: Union College: 2015-2016

That's pretty funny :)

It kind of is, but unless they win something significant in the next year or two, I don't think Cornell fans have much of a reason to blast us...as I defer everyone to UFan's signature.

Re: Union College: 2015-2016

This year most of the ECAC teams returned largely intact (Q, Harvard, Yale, etc.). Moreover, they were also returning their starting goaltenders as well a seasoned senior corps. As we know the ECAC has some of the best goaltenders in College Hockey. This year the parity in the league is reflected in how few points separate teams this late in the season. Even this may not be a true reflection of how evenly matched ECAC teams are. Just look at the league overtime games and ties this year. It's not just us and Q.

This "return of experience" let the ECAC surge out of the gate in terms in non-conference play. At one point last month, the ECAC had 5 of the top 10 pairwise.

We had a very talented team in 2014 but we won with discipline.

It painful to look at recruiting classes at places like BU or BC and Michigan and count all the "super recruits" they end up with each year. ECAC coaches have more work to do in developing talent.

Whatever happens, I would be very pleased to see us continue to play, as we have been recently:
- hungry
- 60 minutes
- never quit
- avoid the box
- be "hard to play against"
- play disciplined

I am not worried about not having home ice. We seem to do better on the road anyway. Against this backdrop and what we have lost, with our young team, we have still managed, as we did last year, to finish the regular season around .500. Next year we are bringing in more speed, and we already have some decent size and experience.

The bottom line .... going forward .... IMO things are looking up !!!

The person who designed that has been creating similar pictures for each Cornell opponent recently and posting them on eLynah -- it isn't a specific attack on Union. E.g., Here's the one for Yale http://elf.elynah.com/read.php?1,201828. (See the message of February 13, 2016 08:08AM.)

They are a pretty dangerous team heading into the ECAC playoffs.

Yes, Colgate is very dangerous !!! They beat us already this year and we know they can score big time and that Charlie Finn can take the pressure and turn away shots !!! They have 4 of the best forwards in the ECAC and for that matter College Hockey and they are seniors and its senior night. Will be a sellout crowd. Plus they have put some sort of voodoo curse on us !!!! :D Does not look like we have a snowballs chance !!! ;)

Playing all the seniors who can walk ... and Kupsky, our backup freshmen goalie.
Fresh Legs ... depth.

Re: Union College: 2015-2016

Nice write-up from Ithaca Times.
"Cornell men's hockey outworked by Union at home"

http://www.ithacajournal.com/story/...ll-mens-hockey-outworked-union-home/81018504/

"Physically, the Union College men’s ice hockey team — with the exception of 6-foot-6 and 228-pound center Eli Lictenwald — looked like the little brothers compared to Cornell University’s big bruising bunch of bullies.

The little brothers had some serious wheels, and Union’s speed turned Big Red mistakes into scoring opportunities in the blink of an eye. Meanwhile, the Big Red seemed a step late or generally off the mark when it came to their scoring chances (36 shots). The combination made for a disappointing start to the final regular season weekend".

The little brothers go back to Ithaca next weekend!

Re: Union College: 2015-2016

Best game of the year for Sak on Friday, IMO. All the team showed up, it was nice.

Saturday, not bad, we looked a tad bit young. Too bad it's a loss.

Back to Cornell !

Go Union !

Re: Union College: 2015-2016

Is there any word on whether or not Supinksi or Gingras will be playing this weekend?

Re: Union College: 2015-2016

Blocked 21 Cornell shots ..... second highest all year.
Pontarelli - can you block some shots too?

Re: Union College: 2015-2016

The Union power play was rather baffling: get to the blue line, pass back to red line, Cornell sets up trap, lose puck. Hoping for more speed tonight.
